Very sobering to see such memories of war in Poland, given the horrific circumstances currently in their neighbouring country. Sad times for sure. Thanks for sharing with us Pedro.

What will be the next city to visit, I would say: " Kaliningrad" that would be a real adventure. Gdansk is very beautiful, thanks again for sharing the travelling videos. Keep on riding!

Keep going north east for a bit. I was so down for Kaliningrad but because of tensions with Europe no visas. That also meant no Moscow/St. Petersburg/Murmansk, which was always the idea if I ever headed this way. Killed the adventure part since I was keen on leaving Europe for a bit. Cheers Jac

230 km East of Gdańsk, toward your destination, you can find famous Wolfsschanze, and 21 km further Wehrmacht field headquarter, where the real assasination on Hitler took place. There is a complex of bunkers with a lot of history about. Higly recommended. In the area, there are nice and clean lakes with good hotels, nice music and tasty beer.

Speaking of Hel, I've found this information about it's unusual name: "In the Old Polish language (X-XV c.) The name Hel means "dune, wilderness, headland", from which, apart from Hel, the earlier name of Elbląg - "Helbląg" was also supposed to be derived. Some researchers point to its source in Germanic languages. On a Dutch map from the 17th century, the entire peninsula is called Heel." To an average Polish person the name Hel doesn't sound like anything - it's just a name. However, Poles have their own word for hell - "piekło" (lit. a place, where people are roasted alive). Fun fact - there is at least one village in Poland named Piekło. :D
@Gubbe512 жыл бұрын
The name Hel can't be of old Polish ancestry. Native Polish words have never a "h" letter. Only words borrowed from Germanic, Latin, Ukrainian or Czech languages are spelled with an "h".
@_Killkor2 жыл бұрын
@@Gubbe51 Yep, I've included the Germanic origin in there, which is further down the line. I knew that a lot of Polish words containing h are loanwords, but I didn't actually know it was literally all of them. That's interesting. I've never looked that deep into it, but on PWN I've found a piece of information confirming what you've said. After that I've been trying to find at least one word containing h that is of Polish origin. Unsurprisingly I've failed so it really must be true then. Well, I haven't been searching that long, so there could exist some weird neologism that contains h and is a native word, who knows. Languages keep evolving as we speak...
@Gubbe512 жыл бұрын
@@_Killkor Find one, and you will be famous. Be aware of misspellings. Poles with little education often write H instead of CH. Especially the obscene word for penis.
@undefinednull57492 жыл бұрын
@@Gubbe51 But Ch is a distinct sound from h and it's rarely differentiated nowadays because of ignorance and bad educational system. Are you saying that true Polish words could not have had been starting starting with ch sound? As Chel? Or Cheł? Pchełm? Or what else?

Polish Forces seem to be a bit like French. I know they participated in the "Battle of Britain" and "Market Garden" in WW2.
@kajosan792 жыл бұрын
Only in contrast to the Franco-British forces in France, Polish forces defended themselves on the front line several times longer, and the Soviets attacked from the east. So there is no comparison here. The more so that the Poles counted on the fulfillment of allied obligations by the French, who were to attack Germany from the west and help them. Of course, they didn't. History repeats itself, and we see how Germany is "willing" to help Ukraine.
@mpingo912 жыл бұрын
Battle of Britain, Market Garden, Battles of Narvik, the defense of France and Dunkirk, defense of the fortress of Tobruk in North Africa, Battle for Rome and the famous capture of Monte Cassino, Battle of Ancona and Bologna, battle route through France with the great armored battle of Falaise. Let's also not forget the Eastern Front. Two Polish armies acting together with the Red Army pushed the Germans out of Polish territory, fought in Czechoslovakia, and finally in Germany where they took part in the capture of Berlin. So there was much more to it.
