I've been driving a 2024 Prius Prime here in Ottawa, Canada since last February. I would say that anyone driving here quickly becomes an expert in winter driving. First, the most important thing is to have traction. The Prius has a switch to turn on traction control, and you definitely need that. I don't think you mentioned traction control. Secondly, we don't call them "snow tires', we call them "winter tires" because they have more to do than just get traction in snow. Summer and all-season tires get hard in cold weather and you lose traction. Winter tires retain their flexibility. If you're driving summer tires on snow, don't expect good control. Thirdly, AWD won't help you when you are driving in snow; only to get moving if you are in significant snow. I have winter tires on my car and I rarely see slipping or sliding. If you're having difficulties, it's not the car, it's the driver.

I have a 2024 XSE premium Prius Prime. I live in the Yukon, Canada. You’re right . On the stock OEM summer tires it’s insanely terrible in the snow. I bought snow rated Michelin X-Ice tires for the winter. This transforms this car. I’d put it up against any 2 wheel drive car. Its handled our Yukon winters so far with ease. The car isn’t perfect but puts a smile on my face whenever I’m driving it. ☺️👌🏼🙌🏼

My guess is Toyota didn’t want to make the car super heavy with both the weight of the plug in battery/system and the weight of the AWD. I’d rather they address the road noise. Maybe 30 extra pounds of insulation? As always a good review along with a beautiful sky. 👍

non really its because of the bigger batterie.........

Believe me, you do not want automatic head lights. What for? I have automatic lights in my Prime and wish i had manual. I have 10 overpasses on my way and it is constant on - off and the dash board goes dim every SINGLE time. The car clears overpass faster than my eyes can adjust to dim dash board. The first time it happened i thought i lost power :( Sometimes if you pass in the shadow of a tree, the Prius activates automatic head lights. I tried to adjust the sensitivity in the menu but they are still WAY too sensitive. In my mind automatic lights are not an upgrade it is actually a downgrade.

I still have my 2005 Prius. Ditched the "eco" tires after going through 2 sets in 40k miles. Switched to Michelin all-seasons. Now on 2nd battery pack, 190k miles, and car moved from San Francisco to Cape Cod. Drives fine in snow. Still getting 42-47 mpg. I suspect if you live where snow is a factor youll use different full time tires or switch to snow tires in the winter.

This is probably beyond your purview but a second video with proper snow tires would probably leave you stunned

Wow, hi, physicist here with an important message. You should NEVER floor it in snow. Literally ever. It's a total waste of energy at best, and is usually significantly more risky. The thing that requires traction is *acceleration* not speed. In principle you can drive in snow at any constant speed without incident (not recommended due to the following), but speeding up, slowing down, and/or turning require force that is hard to come by with less traction. So beginning to move in snow will work MUCH better if you are very gradual with the gas pedal; slamming it down means spinning out immediately and just waiting for the lowest possible traction acceleration rate to build speed while using the maximum amount of energy. I have the XSE Prime and I love it, but I also live in DC where significant snow is pretty rare.

The torque of electric motors makes for traction problems in slippery conditions. I drive a 21 Sienna and it is difficult to avoid wheelspin on wet or snowy conditions.
@stizashell27 күн бұрын
@johnkues546 yes, electric motors technically start with infinite torque, so higher derivatives are massive even if acceleration is low. But this should be correctable in due time by maintaining low acceleration temporarily, ie the opposite of flooring it. I would personally switch to hybrid mode and would be hesitant to drive a fully electric vehicle in snow

Silly if you live with snow! Always be slow to start and remember that you have to stop! My 2019 Prius Prime front wheel drive is absolutely fine in snow with WINTER TIRES ALL AROUND. No winter tires-you're on your own with any car

Nice video. It isn't clear to me if you think everyone should get AWD if they live in a climate that gets much snow or if you think this will be worse than other FWD vehicles in the snow even if clad with better all-season or snow tires. I have a 14 yr of FWD Prius with all-season tires and I think drives similar to other FWD vehicles in the snow. Thanks.

Wtf are you talking about? i have a 2023 priue limted awd, and it fking awesome in the snow. Do not drive like you are restarted or acoustic.

so its a test drive in winter without a car being equipped with winter tire? the 4wd won't be any better if you don't winter tire......plus the 4wd on Toyota hybrid is a big joke

Sucks in snow
