​@@NoOne-us9os priscilla was initially intended to be the character who levels you up, similar to the Maiden in Black/Emerald Herald/Fire Keeper/Doll, and lived at Firelink Shrine. When they made the world more interconnected instead of hub & level based like demon's souls, they changed it to have you level up at ANY bonfire, instead of making you go back to her at firelink. The painted world is interesting in that it's a place for unwanted things both in and out of universe - both Priscilla and the level itself were essentially cut content that they loved too much to not put *somewhere* in the game.
