yup we have all seen it...the ridiculous ebay, craigslist and market place ads describing what appears to be a different car entirely than shown. are they delusional, crazy or really believe the car is that good...or is it possible they are just sleezeballs trying to get ur money for a lipstick on a pig car. heres some tricks and tips on what to look for when buying that dream classic car

Years ago a friend of mine found his dream car a 71 cutlass on craigslist. Rented a trailer from UHaul and took a 4 hour drive...only to see all the things yhe guy hid in the pictures and luckily come back home empty handed. On the flipside, i came across a 12 bolt rear end for my car (im a Chevelle guy) market place. The guy was very generous and actually very happy that a 69 12 bolt housing was going back to a 69 Chevelle. He not only took the cover off and drained it before hand to show the gears and the posi, he also gave me new royal purple gear lube. He threw in an extra set of 4.56 gears and some 66 chevelle trailing arms he had no need for. He even shortened my trip by a few hours meeting me half way. So yeah, there are good and bad ones out there.

Can't anyone just appreciate an old Mopar without trying to make a buck and driving up the prices because now everyone else thinks that's the going rate. Ah well.

I worked for a guy in the '90s that wrote the book on car scamming. He had me take a bottle of trans fluid and a rag and wipe down the chalky yellow factory paint on a '70 Coronet R/T to make it shine for the pictures. He sold a '67 GTX as running and driving. Before the transporter arrived to pick it up. I had to install a 440 and 4 speed in the car and get it running. The carb leaked, the spark plugs I had to dig out of the junk pile. (He wouldn't put a cent in the car). I got it running kinda. It sounded like a '63 VW beetle and didn't have enough power to pull itself on the transporter. I could go on and on with stories.

Dude who was selling it put a ton of pictures up; but managed to avoid or 'camouflage' most of the bad stuff ! When he drove 2 hours with a car trailer to look at it, his cousin convinced him to just buy it because of the hassle of trying to get back the down $$$$$ and the cousin did not want a "black mark" on his reviews ! To this day the truck has never seen the road !!!!!

In 1983 I saw an ad for 72 Chevy truck parts. It was the good stuff like a door tailgate small chrome rear bumper. I dropped what I was doing that day and drove my three-quarter ton four-wheel-drive about 45 miles to grab these parts that were a very good deal as described. When I got to the small town north of Bloomington, Illinois, Kyle, the seller raised the garage door and confidently showed them to me. I don’t think I was there three minutes and I had to get the crap out of town before I got arrested. In 1999 I bought that towns small dying Chevrolet dealership, and Kyle was my parts manager that I inherited. In vengeance, I fired him in the first few days of ownership.

I was hunting for a 74 Torino last yr and found one on market place about an 1hr 1/2 away from home. All the pics looked great. Guy even sent me a video of the car. The video must have been from about 10 yrs ago because there was a hole in the roof next to the back glass so big I could stick my entire arm through. The interior was completely covered with mildew and both b pillars were completely gone.

On the flip side you put up something, describe it well, put up all the pictures allowed and get inundated with “Is this still available?” And nothing further, unless they are an obvious scammer, with a new or stolen account, the 3 people who are real and respond, don’t read the ad or look at pictures and then bombard you with questions that are already covered in ad…then offer you something stupid in trade, lowball lower than scrap value, or tell you they will take it and never show up. Market place sucks, shows you whatever, wherever, no matter what search terms you put in then when you report the scammers….they don’t do anything about it. But what options do you have with Craigslist and local trading posts all dead?

Hey you’re giving away my secrets!! Just kidding lol. The junk I’ve sold off I’ve always been honest about it. That’s always been my secret. I’ll rip out crap carpet to show EXACTLY what kind of floors are in the car. Granted I might give them a coat of paint on good floors that might have pinholes here and there but I always point it out. If the seats are torn up I throw a blanket over it to keep my clothes from getting dirty or torn when I drive the pile but I tell prospective buyers it’s junk under there that needs attention. Unless the car doesn’t have a power train I like them to run and stop when I’m selling them and I’m honest about that as well. I’ll straight up say I threw a junk engine/transmission in to make it move under its own power because I was tired of pushing it. Same goes for body work. Even though I do paint and body for a side gig, I don’t normally touch cars that aren’t staying on the fleet. If anything if it was primered when I got it and it’s looking tired I’ll give it a fresh coat of the cheapest primer to make it look better and then admit about it. I’ll go around and let people know what I think needs replaced and what probably can be saved. I’ve had many cars that looked good from afar but were far from good due to all the filler that was in them and I have told buyers to either enjoy it for what it is or expect to find all kinds of sins under that paint that was there when I got it. Due to me being honest about the junk I’ve come across through the years I have some guys who have bought/traded with me quite a bit. Most of the crap I’ve had I bought/traded for it, played with it for a little while, then shipped it off to someone else to enjoy. I’ve never made a fortune with it but I can say I’ve had some cool old cars and that’s the fun of hot rodding to me.

These scammers who sell cars like this (which seems like a lot more nowadays) has lead to the drastic rise in prices plus having them be popular in film like Dukes of Hazzard or Fast & Furious. Can’t tell u how many times I see a 1968-1970 Charger jacked in price bc the seller puts “same car as used in Fast & Furious”. Supra owners of the Mk4 Generation understand. Look @ the Cudas prices before & after they put 1 in a fast & furious movie then in a John Wick movie

I have to admit I didi the Ducktape framerail repair once on my Car for a DOT didn't got it, sold it (the body of the car was junk) the Interior was mint I swapt it out as I got it because inside matched outside as I got it, the Engine was great rebuild Seals and bearings Intercooler and Turbo also injection pump rebuilt with better injectors, no rattle can job on here, so what I sold was bassically the Engine Tans in a "shipping cradle" forma called car. btw. an honest price for that charger would've been 10K since it's nr. matching, It has an engine with head, intake, carb and trans, it has seats console dash all the trim and glass from the looks of it, all the body pats (even though they're junk). I was looking for an 68 as I started my apprenticeship, about 15 years ago, and back then a 318 champange coloured, automatic console car with tan interior was about 2k, complete car but floors gone.

Car looked kinda great and a good deal from the pictures of course, ''running'' (yeah puking oil and ran on 6 cylinders) and of course seller was good at pictures angle! This Baracuda was 1500 miles away, so I got it delivered and oh my!!! It wasn't event on my driveway that I knew it was worst then I thought! Put it this way....if I were to acid dip or sandblast everything....only the top didn't need replacing. EVERYTHING else had rust hole, all frame rails were junk, firewall etc... EVERYTHING...The only good that it was ''complete'' and did ran enough to move it around. I ended losing like over 5 or 6K. I tried to work on it and be optomistic about fixing it, but it was way big of a project. Could have sink 60K in new parts and bunch of time, but at the end of the day, it didn't worth it. Sold it with full disclosure about everything's wrong. Took the lost and moved on.

If it's a popular vehicle that lots of folks are trying to get. I steer clear of them. I can get by on a less popular version.

Market place buyers. Maybe one or two out of a hundred are legit buyers and know what they are looking at when inquiring about a vehicle. I recently listed a very nice, freshly repainted first generation S Ten pick-up truck. So many commentors on my ad picking it apart and saying it's priced too high. Way too many clowns on there want something for nothing and always have some smart-ass remark about the item for sale. No offence, this charger here is a good parts car for someone in need of some of those hard to find seventy charger pieces.
