Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.
I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate you subscribing to my channel and liking my videos. You can also find me on Facebook borderviewfarms and on Instagram @borderviewfarms

It looks like your crops are better than last year. ? It’s nice to see the significant improvement in the yield and crop in the high management. Is most of your crop high management?
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms Ай бұрын
It's hard to say for sure but yeah I think we're a little better than last year. Most of our crops are somewhere between the "standard practice" and high management. Most at least got fungicide, but only a little got all the foliar passes.

Do you have the opportunity to look at the current disease situation of other seed suppliers genetics for these crops in your area? I presume xcelseeds do their own substantial plots and disease monitoring? Have you recently discussed the white mould and tar spot situations with your agronomist? What is the likely risk for bad white mould on your double crop beans? Out of interest how do these diseases infect crops in the first place (eg wind blown, seed bourne, other plant hosts (weeds, shrubs etc.) for the carry over from one crop season to another and are they carried over in or on the soil in some way?
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms Ай бұрын
Good questions. I did not spray my plot so I can compare hybrid susceptibility to different diseases. I can check customers field where they may have other brands genetics to compare. I've been talking with my agronomist alot about Tar Spot. White mold usually infects the best beans with the most foliage and least air flow. Because of that it's not a concern in double crop beans. These diseases can come from a number of sources, could be soil/residue carry over from previous crops, could be seed borne, and a lot blow in on the winds.

Why does eow spacing matter on white mold
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms Ай бұрын
Wider rows allow more air flow which helps dry out the lower canopy which keeps disease out

What might be the best way to combat ear worms? I plant just the regular ol seed treatment i think its a vt double pro. Sprayed insecticide 5 days before tassel. Cant seem to ever stop them
@BorderViewFarms
@BorderViewFarms Ай бұрын
Best way is to plant corn with the Vip3A trait. Seed treatment won't do anything, insecticide can but timing is critical. Agrisure Viptera and I think some Corteva trait stacks have it.

How will does the sweet corn pencil out on a per acre basis? Better than corn, beans, or wheat?
@BorderViewFarms

I don't know, probably higher returns but a lot more work. Selling 20 dozen of 1 thing, finding a market for 10-20 acres is a whole nother thing
