This scene is great - it expertly sets up the entire movie and tells you everything you need to know about Daniel - what he says, how he says it, and what he doesn't say. It's fantastic acing from a fantastic script. I also love that there are like 15 minutes of movie before this scene, all of them without a single spoken line of dialogue.

I think also the scene right at that the beginning where he is mining for silver, and then has to drag himself, the silver and the cart, with broken legs, back to the town. This tells us all we need to know about this character.

I love that half of what he says is true, and half is either an outright lie or massive obfuscation. The script, the acting the film, masterpiece.

There is some significance, I think, to when the camera briefly pans in on HW, but then changes course and re-centers back on Daniel. Heck if I know what that significance is though. Such an amazing film. Later on when Daniel confesses there is nothing that he likes about people, this scene comes to mind.
@bleakoutput
@bleakoutput Жыл бұрын
I've noticed that too, there is a slight focus pull between the two as well. The pan comes right after he talks about his business being a family business - his big selling point.
@VeggieBrah

@@bleakoutput Its because this scene directly follows where HW is a baby inside the train with Daniel, affirming that HW is in fact the orphaned baby from the previous scene without reminding you with dialogue or obvious visual cues.

I also think it might be alluding to the fact that Daniel says with his words that it’s a family business so the frame has them both centred for a moment but ultimately it goes back to Daniel as the centre because it’s really all about him and always will be

Viewers read into everything but I look at his son at the end compared to this moment and see him being used as his “father’s” prop. Albeit I think Daniel had a good relationship with his son for many years and I feel he wanted to raise him as his own until he told him he wanted to go to Mexico, at which point Daniel, in his personal manner of non acceptance of having a competitor instead of a son, tried to tear him down.
