I get the confusion with the rat people "was a man" line, since I'm like 99% sure it's a reference to the GI Joe Movie. In the movie, Cobra Commander is transformed into a snake man and when he's discovered by one of the Joe's, he says, "I was once a man.", judt like the rat woman did in Zim. So I can totally see why it can be seen that way, but is mostly just a somewhat old and obscure reference to a kid's movie.

Richard Steven Horvitz is one of the most underrated voice actors out there. Despite having a very recognizable voice in all of his roles, his range in the types of characters he can portray is incredible. From a frantic maniac like Zim, to a dumbass like Billy, to a soft boi like Moxxie.

I for one really like his Raz from Psychonauts. A curious, calm, gentle boy with a dry sense of humour. Also I cannot stop thinking about how this game artstyle and setting reminds me of Invader Zim, while the main character is more of a softer version of Dib.

I think of my favorite part about Zim and Dib's relationship is that in the last episode of the series Dib accidentally causes a blackout and when he does he screams "I'm sorry everyone, again" implying he is cause multiple blackouts throughout the years and in an unaired episode, the trial, we see Zim caused at least 2 blackouts on his home planet along with sending half his planet into a blackout back when Tak was supposed to take her test.

Fun fact the episode Plague of Babies was intended to be a crossover episode with Rugrats and Tommy Pickles would be the leader of the baby aliens with E.G Daily set to reprise her role but Nicklelodeon refused to greenlight the crossover aspect of the episode but the crossover aspect can still be seen in the lead babies design chosen to resemble that of Tommy Pickles.

I was a youngin when zim aired and i loved it but that episode made sense to me as a kid just because aliens are known for organ harvesting and whatnot. What grossed me out was zim being engorged after stuffing the organs into his body 🤣

I remember how facinated I was with the dark tones and weird world this show created and just how different it was to anything I had seen previously. My mom hated when I'd watch it of course but never went out of her way to ban it either. It definitely informed my future love of absurdist comedy and my often optimistically bleak outlook on the future.

The successful dib timeline was actually a simulation Zim put dib through where he lives his entire life in a fake world JUST so zim can get him to admit that he was the one who threw a muffin at him.

About the age, Jhonen has said that his age is over 160 (Earth) years old. Regarding “Bestest Best Friends”, watch it again. Keef is creeptastic on a literal stalker level, so Zim was understandably desperate to get rid of him (in his own way, of course, LOL!). Zim was a scintist (bio weapons) on Vort before becoming an Invader (and being banished to Foodcourtia) - according to the script for the episode ‘The Trial’. As for GIR, I hated him as a young adult (which is how old I was when it came out). Now I appreciate him, even laugh, but he’s still not a fave character, but I appreciate him and the dynamic between him and Zim. Ms. Bitters was great! Will forever be missed. kevin Manthei’s music is amazing, he made great choices for the series (and Florpus). One of my fave parts of the score is the music that plays when they swich to space and the Massive. Abducted really stood out to me a decade later. It’s so funny! Hobo 13 is one I liked a lot, because I liked seeing more alien stuff and learning a LITTLE more about Irkens, but my actual fave is ‘Backseat Drivers’ (and ‘Nightmare Begins”), then the Halloween episode. There are a lot of good ones, actually. The opening sequence of Florpus is amazing. It’s my fave thing about the whole movie. I do not like their style changes. I miss the darker, sharper look. The thing that bugged me the most, though, was them getting Tallest Red so terribly OOC (and dropping his second armor colours - red and black). Also, the shading in general seems washed out in a lot of scenes (some are great, though). I did like that Dib and Gaz had darker skin, since they’re supposed to be mexicans (pale mexicans, specifically). The Membrane family was amazng in Florpus. I really liked that a lot. Gazlene has been a canon thing since the 2000’s, though I don’t recall where it was first revealed (not in the series, so don’t feel bad). I would love to hear a review of ‘the lost episodes’.

When she was describing zim, i couldnt help but relate with autism. Zim is incredibly smart but he doesnt stop to think or listen. Whether this is do to genetics or his own ego, its nice how he clearly cant pick up on the cues that the tallest hate him. Hes trying his best and failing. i loved the video. my only problem with the movie was professor membrane's "redemption (?)" thing?- it just feels like he was so terrible at being a parent a basic im proud of you moment and ignoring your children, calling them crazy and refusing to believe things that are proven to you by them was a lot also i agree the new art style was great! i prefer the old one only because the darker colours and sharp edges (since i enjoy that kind of art and its similar to my art style)

great review. I read that there was supposed to be episodelike the return of Tak and the Tallest lost the empire because of their hatred of Zim in Invader Dib. Zim ends up taking over the Irken Empire at the end. Both Zim and Dib are alike and both wanted to be respected by their peers and their own race.

The canceled episodes and such felt like I don't know world shattering or close to serialize than episodic. Dib what a found out more about himself and one time characters were going to be added to the main cast. These felt like game changers if they had continued on.

The commercial breaks were a nice touch, they reminded me of the early days of Nickelodeon. I loved that you went in depth about the show, the characters, and the episodes. Most episodes are somewhere around fifteen minutes but you went for thirty minutes which I am most grateful for. I only saw one episode of Invader Zim when I was younger and didn’t watch the rest until around 2018 and I loved it. I laughed a lot during the movie and wish they’d make another Zim tv show or movie. I know there are comics but I can’t seem to find them. This is a show that im extremely mixed on. It feels like it ended too soon, but I'm also so glad it didn't run on much longer and burn out. The show is also one of my biggest pieces of nostalgia. It's much better as an adult too (aside from Girs lol so random humor). The fact that the movie was so good almost makes me want a revival series but its also a risk im not sure anybody would make.

A great essay. Also I don't mean to rant too much but Dib's treatment often feels to excessive and sadistic. I get it's a dark comedy but Dib doesn't deserve it most of the time and it feels just cruel for the sake of being cruel.

While there may never be another cartoon, or even animation, like Invader ZIM, I believe there ARE a few cartoons that can compete with this cartoon. Two in particular are Adventure Time and Regular Show. AT had a good mix of goofy and random, while Regular Show was a mix of goofy, shock and random. While they can’t compare to Invader ZIM’s amazing chemistry mix of themes and genres, they’re two cartoons that have been able to start and finish while using a small portion of Invader ZIM’s chemistry.

By definition Zim is defective, more specifically his PAK unit, is defective. It contains over a quintillions lines of corrupted code, rendering him "special". It is why he can't function as an invader. In Irken society a PAK is more than just a tool, it defines you, it allows you to live, and it bridges the gap between being a being and being part of the empire. It allows one to act for the benefit of the whole and stores / modifies the individual's persona, shaping his desires and ambitions. Not just to "assign" a function, no the PAK literary shapes you to yearn to complete this task at your core, it defines you completely. Without a PAK an Irken cant survive more than 10 minutes and will instantly lose all of his intellectual and motor skills. Some PAKs are even capable of reattaching to a lesser rank Irken and overwriting its personality and skills to match its previous host to prevent costly losses of gifted individuals of high ranking. When you consider that without it, an Irken is not even sentient, it becomes clear that having a defective one would make for a very interesting character.

This is one of those shows that I always knew about, as early as 2002 in fact, but surprisingly I never went out of my way to actually watch beyond 1-2 episodes I happened to catch and didn't think much about. And I don't know why this was, I guess it just always got lost in the shuffle for me.

I feel like all of us struggled to find our place growing up and this show really still continues to grow with its fanbase whether its at invadercon or just the sheer amount of weird shi* We were never really presented with the scope or purpose of operation impending doom 2... and zim always found a way to fk his dream job up granted it was not even a real invasion and the tallest screwed him over without him knowing........... but it was a show about how dark the world was, things are difficult and a lot of adult animated shows dig deeper into the darkness within our life, and growing up as adults most of us didnt really understand some of the jokes but going back to the show and the recent Netflix film it did its job it came full circle ;-;

Pfft. Squeedely Spooch. Just why? XD Well done retrospective, kiki. Invader Zim was messed up for it's time and I kinda love it for that. The organ harvest episode will always haunt my darkest nightmares. On another note, are you okay? Not to alarm you, but you seem to have the same skin condition that Zim has. Could it be that you too are an Irken invader in disguise? ...On second thought, I retract that statement. Starting to sound like Dib.

I think the finale of the show was the creators' way and the shows' cartoonish way of showing the dangers of treating someone or something as a joke for so long. The whole show treated Zims' domination plans as a joke along with his cartoonish extremism because it was a Nickelodeon older kids' cartoon. As much as Dib seems pestering to all the other people in the show? He is right about Zim. And it had to end on a high note somehow.
