The one thing that always impressed me about Zoro is how different he is than other "2nd to the MC characters" I watched one piece relatively late in my anime journey so by the time I started it, I was used to the Vegeta Sasuke types. The "I'm not actually your friend! Its just that being on your team is beneficial" Types and I expected Zoro to be just like them and not even acknowledging that hes a pirate until later in the story. But no, once he made a promise to Luffy he was all in and kept his word and dedicated himself to the person he calls a captain he never saw it as a game or some half assed deal. Zoro instantly gained my respect as a character once I realized this (Ironically during the filler conversation between him and Chopper about joining the crew in alabasta)

He honestly feels like the main character of his own story, not just some edgy guy who ends up joining "the team" after a fight (I get why you wouldn't have been surprised though, Hiei, Uryu, Sasuke, Vegeta, and I'm sure there are more pretty much follow that same path) Don't get me wrong, the edgy second-in-command is my favorite type of anime character next to the big silent comrade, but it is nice to see a change of pace every now and again

Zoro balances loyalty to his crew and his own ambition perfectly. because the rest of the crew is obsessed with doing the right thing while Zoro is more nonchalant about things but when the moment calls for it he still does the right thing. The crew wanted to rescue Vivi knowing what they were getting into while Zoro kept a level headed and said to everyone even Luffy that it's not worth it considering they already almost got killed a couple weeks before. And that shows you how different Zoro is compared to the rest of the crew he doesn't care about doing the right thing and only cares about what makes sense and that is not fighting the government and getting themselves killed for 1 girl they haven't seen in over 2 years.

I was thinking about how weird it is for Zoro, someone who hasnt really been that loyal to anyone in his life to just randomly go ride or die with luffy. But it does make sense, when luffy frees his from the Marines yard where hes tied up he acts like it wasnt that big of a deal but he knows he would have just died there and that he owes luffy his life. Also one piece's biggest fumble is forgetting about tashigis strength, it would have been cool if she was like Koby and luffy but for zoro.
