While there may be no harm in getting dressed in front of your kids of the opposite sex, some think it’s totally inappropriate. We’re weighing in on parents being naked around their children and the importance of starting the conversation about consent and recognizing body parts at a young age.

I really respect Adriennes mom for doing that bcuz I’m the same. I have a 2 yr old boy and I’m very cautious of who he interacts with and who takes care of him, due to the abuse & sexual exploitation I grew up with from family members. Luckily I have a have a babysitter who was in the same shoes as I was in, and her having her own husband(that is very respectable) I know my son is in good hands & I thank god for that 🙏🏻

Yes! I wanted to hear what she said in the end because I don't like when guys touch my waist or sometimes they squeeze it hard and it hurts. I tried saying stop and one guy just wouldn't. I asked him why is he doing this to me and he said "because you're cute". I think guys don't understand that even if they think it's a compliment or w.e, they should stop when we tell them too. I've heard guys say im just too sensitive but they need to respect my boundaries.

The danger of personalizing body parts is when they need to tell an adult they have been sexually violated, and nobody gets what they are talking about. I agree with Garcelle. I grew up with parents who didn’t make the body shameful. That’s not to say they just pranced around naked, but if we accidentally walked in on each other it’s not a HUGE deal. The body is not always a sexual thing. It’s similar to when Tom Brady was talking about kissing his kids. People were in an uproar because he was showing affection by pecking his sons. Not everything is sexual people

I appreciate this conversation, it was productive and honest. It is important to use the actual genital words "vagina" "breasts/titties" etc. It allows the children to take away the shame of the definitive words and in an instance of potential abuse, they can communicate it to someone they trust and the adult will understand and take action. In the black community, this needs to become more normalized and discussed. Black girls are victimized more than any other racial group and it starts with communication of body parts, consent, and acceptance.

I'm so glad someoen pointed this out because I was thinking about this when Jeannie spoke. It can also do more harm than good when parents give nicknames to body parts because if something happens like molestation, when the kid is trying to tell someone what part was violated, it may not be clearly understood and can sometimes be overlooked.

I also grew up like Adrienne where we as females just didn’t allow men to be around us naked or allow men outside of their dads change little girls for similar reasons. I find mothers were more open to be free with their bodies around their children boy or girl, but I will be honest and say I find it very uncomfortable when men do the same with girls. It just feels very inappropriate. Dads & their sons it doesn’t bother me as much. But I do think teaching consent matters from a young age and making them feel safe knowing they can tell you anything avoids problems overall with their bodies. It shouldn’t be a topic where there’s shame.

@@Sthuthukile yea I get what you’re trying say. From my experience we just had a balance. You dress a certain way leads to people thinking of you sexually, but it doesn’t equate to consent. Like I knew that wearing revealing clothes will lead to others thinking certain stuff, but we were still taught that it doesn’t meant acting on it is natural. I think that’s the plus side of being in a religious but pretty open minded household-things like lust is a sin and immodesty can cause lust in others, but there’s an understanding that the sin is their responsibility.

Might be?! Jeannie, you’re already a great mom. I taught my kids: “Who are the only people to touch you down there?” “Mommy, daddy, and the doctor if she needs to.” “And what do you do and say if someone else tries to touch or play?” “STOP! THATS NOT OKAY! And run to an adult!” We playfully went over it at bath time every night until it stuck. I’m like Adrienne. My mom did the same, so I had to find a happier and less abrasive way to help them become aware.

I can relate to Adrienne so much in this segment. My grandma used to take care of me & my siblings while my mom was in jail. she was an extremely bitter, narcissistic, religious man-hating woman. She pinned in our head that men were all cheaters, liars, and molesters. We weren’t allowed to watch any shows that talked about sex because it was shameful to her. She projected her husband cheating on her onto us. She told me (4 at the time) & my little brother that if a house ever has their blinds closed or curtains hanging, it meant that there were molesters living in there. I’m triggered til this day because she freely uses that word to this day, even referring it to dogs that have sex. She always shamed us for showing our bodies & getting tongue piercings because it meant we were whores and wanted men’s attention. Yet she used to use the bathroom in front of us when we were kids & I find that disgusting. Adrienne’s mom was projecting her childhood abuse onto her kids (I’m sure unknowingly) which can confuse children & make them feel ashamed of their body & afraid of men. To this day I find myself sexist towards men & shameful of showing my body.

If we walked by or she called us to bring her something, she didn't make a big deal to cover-up in from of my sister, my brother or I. Similar to Adrienne's experience. Nudity wasn't a big deal in my household. She said, she didn't want her children to be embarrassed by her nudity in the event when she gets older we may have to bathe her, son or daughters. That day did come and we were totally comfortable bathing and caring for my mom. All of us.

I’ve learned to look at my mothers body wit respect her body grew a family Nd her body has protected us all so I see my mother as a temple Nd her flaws r her battle scars. I honestly just think it depends on age and the gender of the child. Like Adrienne said, some cultures do it differently. I also think it depends on if the parent is a single parent or not. It is much easier when you have a partner to assure the child to them while you get yourself together, but if you are a single parent with a toddler you’re just gonna have to do what you gotta do.

I wrote down a quote Jeannie once said. "If you don't have anyone to pour back into what's been poured into you, then it's null and void to what you're receiving. Gotta give back what you're receiving." It's amazing and inspiring to see Jeanne's evolution. I think we've all been in the headspace before of being fearful to having children because of the own traumas we've dealt with -- and we don't wish to bring that upon anyone, especially our kids. She's been committed to her healing journey and has found the strength and courage to love and teach a child everything she's learned and had to overcome. You're going to be an amazing mother, Jeannie! God works in miraculous ways.

In my family most of us peed with the door open. It was normal and most of us still do. I never thought anything about seeing my mom change or anything. We were taught consent and everything as kids especially when setting started and my mom made sure we knew how to say no.

this is a great conversation to have honestly.. i’m an only child & my mom is a single mother. i am 22 years old & my mom is in her 50’s & to this day my mom & i are comfortable being naked around each other! we aren’t shameful to each other either when one of us is naked versus the other is not, & my mom has never been one to hurry up & get dressed if i happen to walk in on her getting dressed it’s just something normal in our house

Yeah, I grew up in a family where nudity was normal and pecking on the lips was normal. And I am grateful for it! My siblings and I are so comfortable with the human body and desensitized to a lot of things that other people seem weirded out by. I notice it especially with my brother. I can talk to him about any female issue I am having from period pain to body image insecurities. It’s great to have that kind of closeness to family members.

Yeah they seemed so connected at times although I have to say as much as I like Garcelle. Imma have to agree with Jeanie’s point of view a little bit more especially when it comes to the consent and age appropriation. Like if when not to keep showing yourself to your kids at a certain age but ok yeah. If they do culture appreciation I get it. I feel like if Garcelle had girls I feel like it would have been different but boys it is. Since there both opposite sex it can get a little awkward I guess & weird at least from my point of view. But like she said as long as you explain it should be ok but I don’t know.😐🤨😕
@jin8640
@jin8640 2 жыл бұрын
in our household we were raised to knock/announce our presence before entering the room. ofc there shouldn’t be shame of your body but there should be boundaries with it. i believe if it’s same sex than it’s okay until a certain age as long as their comfortable and because like jeannie pointed out some parts should remain private or special. honestly all of this scares me so much to have kids one day because i don’t know exactly when or how to do things and the thought of someone sexually assaulting a child is beyond heartbreaking. 😔

I’ve read not to give private parts fun names… because when they go to school if they speak to teachers of those parts they won’t be aware of it because it’s not the correct term for it. Like I heard a little girl told her teacher her uncle always ate her cookie and the teacher had no idea that it meant something other than an actual cookie! She found out that’s what her parents name her private part. And the teacher had no idea and the girl would always tell her that her uncle would eat her cookie. Which is why as harsh as it sounds, I have spoken to my son about his body parts with actual body part names

Some very good points made. I didn't teach my daughter nicknames for body parts. She has seen me nude many times. But again like you guys I wanted to teach her that her body is beautiful and not horrible sexual object to be embarrassed by. I read an article that this is how parents are over in France & England and their teen pregnancy rate is much lower than ours. Just something to think about.

I’m gonna say no… because although we are humans and have different bodies I think the idea of walking with ur thing out and ur Tatas… there are people that aren’t comfortable with walking around with their own body parts out let alone seeing somebody else… that’s strange ! and then on the other hand respect boundaries… if your child says they’re u comfortable pay attention …. I think it can be funny one time just to embarrass or annoy ur kid… BUT I’m also concerned about the sexualization of this kind of behavior

While I get the cultural thing of families openness of removing the shame of nudity it should not be expected to be a practice in every culture. Some cultures are just more conservative and drawing boundaries of what is appropriate or not is part an individual's conscience and what's the standard of morality for the particular culture. Aiding one another to become comfortable with self I'm not as certain is a literal process I think would be an introspective investigation if I would dig a little deeper

It also depends on the kids , his rate of learning things & what could possibly affect him in his environment. I wouldn’t put an age limit on it but rather pay close attention & try to find out to what they know & how they process it . From there I would judge if I gotta stop it at age 3 or prolong it to age 9 etc ….
@senoraantero2836

Definitely depends on age. I have two girls and I shower with them or dress in front of them. Now when they get older they may not actually see me naked. But I have taught them and repeated to them anytime I bathe them that no one touches etc and I tell them the actual name “vagina” so Lord forbid there’s ever any issues, they’re telling me the actual name and not confused. Their pediatrician actually helped me with that. She told the girls during an exam “now I am only checking you here because I’m a doctor and your mommy is here” letting them know the difference etc.

As a side note I just have to say this. The Real is a pleasure with these four ladies. They work together so well as a team while appreciating everyone's authentic individuality. In this current team with Gracelle it's clear there is no toxicity between any of them. Now the focus is on the conversation, not on underlying issues. All of them speak their mind but between these four there is that warmth also. Their team-work doesn't feel forced by any means. It's very natural and real. What a relief! The show is now a joy and has this realness without any underlying issues. Garcelle was a great choice into the team. Hopefully the Real will have these four for a long, long time!
