In the summer of 1988 Yellowstone National Park was hit with the worst wildfire season in recorded history. A total of 793,880 acres were burned, not counting the 10’s of thousands of acres burned in the surrounding forests. It was into this smoke-filled landscape that Randy guided our oldest son, Flint, on his first sheep hunt.
At that time, youth could not apply for big game licenses until they would be 14 during the hunting season. Flint didn’t turn 14 until a few days into October, so he missed out on the first month of the big horn sheep hunt. Much of the hunt was undertaken in very poor conditions with thick smoke and low visibility.
Randy shares their adventures. He also praises Flint’s passion for hunting big horn sheep to lead him to become a great big horn sheep guide for several of the local outfitters for a number of years, before one died in a tragic accident. Later he moved to Alaska and it is hoped he’ll eventually have a chance to add an Alaska sheep hunt to his credit. Flint shares some of his photos. One is of the sheep he got on this hunt, two are of from scouting trips he and Randy took years later, and others from a few of his other adventures scouting and guiding for sheep hunts.

I have a 600 and a 660 in the 6.5 Rem Mag and it is indeed a pretty handy package! I have over 20 one shot caribou kills with the deadly little carbines. Always amazed how much disinformation came out on this great cartridge... Also those Hank Roberts stoves are a better design than a lot of modern stuff. Thanks for sharing such a meaningful memory with your son. I got my son on a Yukon moose when he was 13 and it is my favourite hunt ever. Really helped his confidence level as he grew into manhood. Great stuff!

From both Randy and Cathy: Thank you! It was such a great time. And our son, Flint, passed on this love of hunting to his 2 sons, 2 daughters, and bonus son and 2 bonus daughters. Recently Flint, who lives in AK, told us that one of the best hunts ever was an AK bear hunt with #2 son, even though they didn't get a bear. Saw lots, just no one they wanted. And just recently that same son [our #2 grandson] got an AK huge bull moose. Flint has been experiencing the joy, many times over, in the last 15 or more years, with his children, both of blood and heart that Randy shares of his hunts with our two sons. We appreciate your comment and thanks for watching.

God bless you and yours Mr. Selby. The Good Lord is giving us some beautiful rain here in west Texas and He is very Good. Ain't worried about wildfires any more. Still praying for the folks who lost everything in Hawaii. Take care my friend. Thank you for all you do, ain't many folks left like you, and I am glad that I found you, a real expert on life, and abundance of wisdom.

That was a great story, thank you. I can relate somewhat to that story. I'm from Oklahoma, born and raised. I've always dreamed of elk hunting. Haven't got it done for myself yet but two years ago my son and I went to southern Colorado on a diy public land second rifle season hunt. I was 36 years old and my son was 14. Wow,what an adventure. Thankfully one of my coworkers is a elk hunter and was willing to give me a lot of advice. I really couldn't afford a tag for myself (to much diesel) . So I bought a bull tag for my son and we were off. Hunted hard for 7 days with not much luck. On the 8th day that evening we were a little discouraged and tired . Not saying much just setting and thinking. Just before sunset my son whispered, dad I see an elk. I said let me look through the binoculars and see if it is legal . And it was. He put two shots through the lungs at 238 yards with his 308 win remington 700. And the 5x4 bull went down. We were so excited, we couldn't help but hoop and hauler . Nothing like helping your children with hunting. Sorry for the long story but after hearing yours I couldn't help but share.

Remington was way ahead of the game with the 6.5 and the laminated stock. In 1969 at the age of 11 I shot my first deer with the 6.5 RM, md. 660 with the same type of laminated stock that is in your photo. Then last year I shot a pig with the 120 Barnes ttsx. It's hard to get brass and I had to work down some Nosler 7mm RM brass. Great story, love your channel. Thanks and may God bless.

Great story! Thanks for sharing. The 6.5 Remington Magnum is one of my favorite cartridges. Remington could have jumped back in the 6.5 game in the last few years and could have boasted the hottest short action 6.5, but they have let one of their best cartridges just die. It only gets better in rifles with barrel in the 24"-26" range.

I really miss going hunting with my son too. He was gone for a long time in Afghanistan. His outfit was protected from above by him and his sniper buddies on overwatch duties. Hey wrote me many times. I thank God everytime I think about it that he made it home safely. I don't get to hunt with him as much as I would like, either. I know how you feel. God Bless you and yours, and I would simply enjoy your company, anytime my good friend. Thank you.

Wonderful memories, thank you for sharing them with us. I graduated high school in 1988 and wanted to move out west, but my parents talked me out of it. I joined the Army and was stationed at Ft Carson Colorado. It was a lot of fun hiking and hunting there. My dad recently gave me his Remington Model 600 in 308 Win. He bought it new in 1967 when he came back from Vietnam. It’s a great lightweight carbine. 👍

Must have been saddening to try to hunt, and that ash isn't fun. Seen it myself during the wild cat fires in west Texas back in 2010. Hope and pray it don't happen again, cause the conditions are right for it down here. I enjoy good hunting stories. My friends son made it back from Canada and seen 4 black bears, 3 big ones and a cub. I made dern sure that they all seen your video on that dern bear spray. 🐻

@The Real Gunsmith. Hi Mr. Selby. I have searched your videos and was wondering, Have you done a video specifically on the .270 Winchester?
@TheRealGunsmith
@TheRealGunsmith Жыл бұрын
I've mentioned it in numerous videos, and in at least one mention I load for .270 Win with RL 22 or RL 26, 7828, 7828 SSC and R 9 1/2 primers. Each rifle will like a bit different diet. I'll keep in mind your request, thank you. And thanks for watching.

Was this hunt area anywhere near The Thorofare? I remember reading about it as a very young man and always wanted to hunt it. The closest I ever got was an elk hunt near Ishawooha Trailhead. No guide so couldn't hike beyond the wilderness boundary. This would've been the following year, 1989. I remember '88 well. Seems as though it was drier than a popcorn fart all over, even here in the Bakken. Enjoyed the story, thanks.

North of the Thoroughfare. We were in wilderness much of the time, which, as residents is allowed, but not for non-residents. Thoroughfare is S and SW of the South Fork of the Shoshone River, and we were on drainages on the north side of the North Fork of the Shoshone river. A lot of rugged country between us and the Thoroughfare. My video of our younger son, Landon's, sheep hunt, that was in the Thoroughfare, as his tag was for that area. Thanks for watching.
