The US government has hounded Julian Assange since WikiLeaks first revealed the extent of US war crimes in 2010. In the process of persecuting Assange, the federal government has used every tool at its disposal and even pushed beyond the boundaries that supposedly restrict state power in defense of civil liberties. One of the most insidious tactics is the use of the Espionage Act, which had not been used for against whistleblowers and journalists for almost a century before Assange's case. In the first of a two-part conversation, lawyer and human rights defender Stella Assange, spouse of Julian Assange, joins Chris Hedges for a look at the vast and vicious campaign by the US to silence Julian Assange, and what it all portends for our democracy.

We may perform citizen grand juries. This would not be a legal procedure, but if we performed these grand juries transparently, and with videos recording, we would change the world. The tyrants who currently rule have broken multiple state, federal and international laws. Fortunately, our Ancestors had the same concerns which we have, and managed to place law to delineate how governments are to act and behave. Most of these politicians are traitors throughout our world. The globalist coup has infiltrated and damaged most national governments and billions of people, especially since 2020, but after 9-11. Altogether it is about the large corporations, bankers, dark nobility and madness of powerful people to think they have the right to overrule the private and the public spaces for their own powers, privileges, profits...monstrous Liberation and truth are needed.

He's actually incarcerated because he's actually assaulted someone and he was extradited back to his own country because he's a criminal. But maybe you didn't know that part. Did you also know that when he was in about 19 years old that he hacked the United States government and entered secret NASA files? Did you know that he actually got in trouble for it? Probably not huh ? Many of you bite on to the dog whistles but you don't really look into what the truth is. Julian is not a good human being. Wiki leaks As an idea is good. But he wasn't the right 12 have anything to do with it. Edward Snowden is the real Patriot. And our country drove him off into another foreign country because we won't promise him a fair trial. The one you should feel bad for is Edward Snowden.

Worse things have happened in other parts of the world, but the injustice and mistreatment towards Julian Assange in the UK is the worst example that I know of. Also the motives to treat Julian Assange the way that they have are revenge and spitefulness, because he exposed wrong doing and shamed the people at the top of the American government and military. Shame on the British legal system for pandering to American demands. I very much hope that the UK Judges will see the harm that they are doing to their own credibility and free Julian Assange 🎗️🎗️🎗️

Julian case would’ve been solved ages ago, but by the attitude of our own politicians from EVERY Party, who serve not Austrilia’s and neither Australians interests in safeguarding our security and personal integrity when the situation so requires. Instead, they love serving the role of lapdogs to immoral politicians overseas, in exchange for a “Well done, you Down-under fellow” over phone call .. What a sacrifice of a Human life, in the case of Assange.

They have become much too comfortable stepping on our toes and wiping their feet on the Constitution.. I Pray JA survives this cruel assault on his spirit and health and a profession that has been compromised by thieves and butchers.. We have overslept this long nap and much has changed in the meantime.. somewhere along the way we surrendered our mettle and tenacity and settled instead for an illusion of safety and security..

Chris and Stella hold a topical discussion that connects the dots between subjects that have lost momentum and need a breath of fresh air to revive the essence of Truth that has been bled out by media.. I for one can not grasp how the issues brought out of deception and into the light of public discourse to never be discarded and dismissed again.. We the People need to be as serious about the deceptions being perpetrated as the perps who gain entry into public office not to serve but for access that opens doors into a unseemly reality.. We have been dismissed from the table where the exceptional evil occurs.. But it's Our Table!!!

It's hard to comment on the detail of what Stella and Chris discuss, as it's in a sense surreal for those of us not actually involved in some way, opposed, as it is, to the image of what folk would like us to believe is normality. Mainstream media seems to be behave as if many really newsworthy events and ongoing issues aren't even happening, and those it does cover it distorts and under anlyses to a point where meaningful journalism is abandoned. Engaging with the perspectives of individuals such as Chris Hedges, Noam Chomsky, and George Galloway instills in me a sense of optimism, albeit tempered by a profound sense of despondency, particularly when contemplating the fate of figures like Julian Assange. This contemplation raises questions regarding the sincerity of those entrusted with global affairs, and their commitment to both the world at large and the well-being of Western nations, including the United States and Europe. 🙏❤️🙏

And George Galloway and Jeremy Corbyn, both vociferous supporters of Julian Assange. I'm dismayed at the sheer multitude that are complacent and apathetic about his plight including those that approve of the injustices meted out to Julian. Could just as easily be any one of us and one would expect that more than enough of us would care -evidently not, sadly.

In India also same situation. Fascism in the hands of the b.j.p govt. Copying America, giving lip service to democracy and rule of law and doing the opposite. The west keep praising Modi, thinking he will be a road block for China. No such thing. China is occupying territories from our northeast,Modi keeps quite,he is scared of China. The west could not care less about what is happening in India. They are the ones who always supported dictators, where is their so called commitment to democracy? Such hypocrites.

Wonderful 👍. Along with Richard Wolff and Yanis Varoufakis you're my favourite news source, Chris. Much love to you and Stella and all involved in this. My hope is that the feeding of elite-non-elite eg clueless NYTimes Harvard grads can/should now be achieved via them being pointed to your internet channels- it may seem like we're going backwards but I have faith truth is more compelling over the long haul. PS Durkheim's articulation of: people who seek the annihilation of others are driven by desires for self-annihilation is a VERY elucidating concept, I couldn't immediately find the quote but this point bears much repeating I think for explaining many emotionally-injured 'successful' people, Trumps neice Mary has some good stuff to say along these lines.

Very very helpful context. As an Australian citizen i commenced diligent research on the now considerable body of evidence on US vs Assange since 2010. SEPT 2023 now. 65 MPs of the Australian Parliament have signed an open letter & support the delegation of Australian MPs from all sides of our national parliament who are going to US to discuss Julian Assange with US Members of Congress & The House. This insightful analysis will have been examined by some - essential context. Thankyou

It is criminal to persecute Assange and against freedom of speech. I am disappointed that the UK is too cowardly to release Julian to join his family and go home. I also have listened to and admire Snowdon. He is intelligent and courageous. Sincerely hope he and his wife have a nice life in Russia. I want Stella to have at least that much and worry about Julian's health. They need to release him NOW. I wish that I could do more than sign every petition that I can. And Chris be very careful that you are not next for working so hard to bring us some truth.🤞

Thanks to Chris Hedges (and Julian Assange) for not letting the darkness of a world where truth is no longer a necessary corollary to reality as far as you can look on the political and journalistic landscape stop you from speaking the words, and creating an environment, from where those who may still care to look and to, indeed, confront the precedents and loss of all proportionality that misinformation brings. Respect to both of you, and everyone who knows that evil triumphs when good people do nothing. Even if all we have left is hope

Instruments like The Patriot Act (I and II), NDAA, and the 1917 Espionage Act have built the foundation of a police state. Cop City is likely just the beginning of an America that will have quasi-military bases in every major city. The plight of Julian Assange is the blueprint for broader authoritarianism that will employ, among other draconian measures, terrorism laws to criminalize investigative journalism, activism and dissenting voices of every kind. Though it's already happening, most people in the United States are still largely oblivious to the encroaching totalitarianism- or the thought of such a blow to democratic freedoms is hard to conceptualize.

This continuing drama, and I hate to state it as such, is perplexing and alarming. With so much credence given to the ability to know the truth, one cannot ignore Julian's situation as it is the epitome of the farcical exercise of power as it exists. Reminding of Galileo's treatment under the Catholic Church and the refusal to recognize the heliocentric view of our solar system. The truth be so damning to the men occupying robes or righteousness made the pen and paper incapable of holding words which might describe the nature of heliocentric prose. Not even fiction is permitted to be written according to papal edicts. Today, a papal edict recognizing heliocentric as fact remains unwritten. Julian's situation is a reassertion of pre-enlightenment relevancy and an attack on modernity. It is for the very same reason Galileo was persecuted, the holders of robes to be donned, ordained, separating the wheat from the chaff as required. Yet again, another emperor having hired a fraudulent tailor and seamstress making vexatious attire from the yarn of lies.

I am surprised that Mr. Hedges expresses surprise at America "breaking its own rules" in its efforts to go after Assange. For me, once my parents had to flee Iran due to elements in the Shah's regime's antagonistic response to Dad's outspoken support to return democracy to Iran, my sense was that America had no rules. The problem is that, and I assume that most viewers of this channel must know, America overthrew Iran's burgeoning democracy in the CIA's 1953 Operation Ajax. For me, that, and all the evil that America perpetrated since then, including slaughtering millions of innocent Iraqis and Afghanis over the last quarter century, was evidence that America has no rules aside from doing whatever evil any corrupt elements of the White House wish to, once elected. Furthermore, the abundant evidence that other evil elements of American industry have permanently carved out holes in the daily workings of American politics that are never questioned or addressed, only solidifies that opinion.
