The Lucca A53 Mini by La Spaziale is, at least on paper, a proper home barista workhorse. It claims to bring consistent, reliable, and repeatable cafe quality espresso home at a competitive pricepoint. But words at cheap, so in this week's video I'll be getting my sticky barista paws into this espresso machine to see how it lives up to the claims.

I have this machine and use it to run my business. Things a workhorse. I was concerned about the 53mm portafilter, but it doesn’t actually matter. I’ve had it for about 2 years now and this thing has made itself a lot more money than I paid for it. When I get an upgraded machine, this will stay in my home. It’s a fantastic machine that pulls great shots.

Hi there! When you mentioned you use it for your business did you mean you run a small or mobile cafe? I'm looking into machines that are suitable for a small scale business and something I can use for pop ups. Will this be able to keep up with high traffic? Can this machine keep up or does it need recovery time after x number of shots? Would you recommend other machines? I'm willing to pay upwards of 5 or 6k for a capable machine. Thank you for your input! Have a great day!

@@rhythms24 I use it on a mobile cart for farmers markets, pop-ups and events. It has it's limitations, but only if using the hot water boiler over and over again (ie for Americanos, but I've started using a separate water source for that). If you're willing to pay 5 or 6K, I'd go with the marzocco. I've used that for several events in the past and it's been a favorite of mine. Plus, it can be plumbed in or using the reservoir. But, this machine has been really, really solid for me. I've had long lines that lasted for several hours at an event with zero breaks and this machine kept up perfectly.

My mini is about to have it's 10th birthday, I bought it from Clive way back when. The only time it turns off is the rare occurrence of us losing power. Other than that it runs 24/7 and seems very happy to do so. When I bought it, there wasn't many options for the home barista outside of an e61 machine. And the styling of this machine matches my MCM home perfectly. I take your comment about Ron Burgundy as a compliment! lol. What I can say is it's a well built piece of equipment. I rebuilt the steam arm and descaled the boilers about 2 years ago, and when we cracked them open, it didn't even seem to need it. The only issue I've ever had with mine is that plastic fill line for the steam boiler. It leaks ever so slightly and I've replaced it about 4-5 times. But outside of that. It's rock solid and makes killer drinks for either myself or a large group, never misses a beat.

In the fall of 2014 I went to Clive Coffee intending to walk out with iirc a Rocket R58, the staff asked what I made daily - cappuccino, they sold me on the Lucca Mini, a savings at that time of around 1k. I had some unnecessary worries about the 53mm portafilter and after using it daily for nearly 9 years with one breakdown (covered under warranty) it has been a total workhorse. In combination with the Eureka Specialty 75 and Acaia Lunar scale, I get consistent shots every time. Yes, it is a simple machine, and it is awesome at what it does.

Hi, Spro. I have owned a La Spaziale Lucca A53 Mini since July 2021. I put it alongside my 2005 La Pavoni Pro in my coffee corner. I gradually have transferred my daily coffee routine to my Lucca, so I'm familiar with it. I bought my Lucca because its saturated grouphead is on par with the La Marzocco Linea Mini for less than HALF the cost. Having a saturated grouphead is a great selling point for all La Spaz Vivaldi/Dream/Lucca machines. It's also well built, easy to repair, and used commercially in smaller coffee bars. Personally, I like its compact design, as well as its aesthetic. A little old school Italian, like my La Pavoni. As for its portafilter basket size of 53mm, other major manufacturers such as Breville and La Pavoni use smaller baskets. The theory is smaller baskets provide more crema and deliver shots easier and more consistently, because less pressure is required. Also, a 16g dose in a smaller, deeper 53mm basket can deliver more flavors and aromas, since the water flows through the puck more slowly with less pressure. At least, that's the theory and since I don't own a 58mm machine, I can't test it. Frankly, I've found enough accessories to customize my machine and optimize my workflow. Clive Coffee provides excellent, friendly support. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my purchase.

I’ve had the direct plumb - rotary pump version for about four years and I love it. I do agree that the smaller diameter basket is a bit more challenging when looking for compatible toys, but it probably saved me money. As an aside, I flush and wipe the brewhead after every shot and do a deep cleaning once a week; I’m surprised you haven’t done more videos about the importance of a clean machine.

It's a great machine. I have the full size Lucca A53 which gives the upgrades of rotary pump, plumbed water supply, a larger more powerful 2.5L steam boiler, and programmable line pressure pre-infusion time. I'd whole heartedly recommend the full size A53 if you're able to plumb it. I've actually convinced two family members to buy their own and they love it as well. I think the volumetric dosing is a great feature, it's so nice to just punch a button and pull as shot while steaming milk and not having to mess with watching a scale under the cup. I just tweak the grind settings as needed to keep shot time appropriate. The 53mm hasn't been an issue, there are even 53mm dosing cups that work with the Niche Zero or Eureka grinders. FYI that there are more buried programming settings available - you can adjust boiler temperature/pressure and extended range brew temperature offsets. The Lucca A53 is really just a cosmetically updated Vivaldi II, which is a workhorse that has been around for 20 years. You can use the instruction manual for the Vivaldi to find out about the buried setting options available.

I literally put my Cremina, Faemina lever, and Pavoni lever in the closet after I got a plumbed in 220 volt La Spaziale Vivaldi S1 some years ago. Rock solid, great construction, heavy, commercial steam, 2 boiler, rotary pump, electronic temp control. Have owned a slew of other machines including commercial. I think Dallacorte and La Spaziale were once the same company but went their separate ways. Dallacorte also 53mm I believe.

I actually think it looks cool with the wooden panels. If it had a standard portafilter they would sell 5 times more machines . I tried the mini Vivaldi and I have to say the steam power is solid. It s not much weaker than a Linea mini. If it had a rotary pump and a standard portafilter it would be an awesome machine . Concerning clearance, I don t like when people say that it s too low. Espresso/ cappuccino cups are not meant to be huge mugs . If you drink your coffee in a mug , you don t want an espresso machine . Good review again and thanks for sharing .

Yeah the wood panels definitely look better than the standard plastic in my opinion too, and the steam really does kick off. I was impressed with that. I think a rotary pump and 58 would help sales in some ways, but it seems La Spaziale uses a 53mm almost exclusively on the machines I’ve seen, but some do have rotary pumps. And in terms of clearance, I don’t think many folks are getting mugs for their espresso machine, but I will say 2-3 inches is painfully small, and even a cappuccino cup in many cases will struggle to fit with spouts.

Its a 2 ear portafilter not 3. I am not sure if that is compatible.Its a M12 handle, not M10. I can give zero cares for the portafilter size, as this machine is a solid consistent, sexy machine. I like the look vs the boxy all metal. It can use some flare, but its a subtle looker....Do a custom paint job on the panels if you want, IDK!?

I’ve used this for years now for catering and pop ups. It’s a great machine to work with. And I’ve worked on LM machines in shops. Save your money, buy this, and you’ll thank yourself- if you you want to open a small shop, do catering or event pop ups. Some can run on 20amp, making the recovery time of the boilers absolutely minima.

They are 15 amp regulated by SAE or whoever regulates these. But with the computer in the machine both boilers work after warm up. (I get 800 watts for brew boiler, 1100 watts for steam boiler, and 1600 watts when both are need). This keeps it below the 1800 watts(15 amps). So 20 amps would be nice but, it really doesn't make a difference for me, (so fast!) this machine is amazing! BTW the old La Spaziale were true 20 amp machines.

I have the older version of the A53 mini and i love it. My biggest complaint is the lack space under the group head. I was worried about finding tools for it but Clive sells a Big Step in 53mm and i wasable to find a dosing funnel. With the deeper portafilter I think you get less channeling. The big seller for me was the fact that is E61, I find them horrendous. Im also pretty handy so its nice that Clive sells pretty much every part in the event something ever goes wrong.

Great Machine at any price! Super quiet vibratory pump! Front loading water a must for cabinets. Amazing steam, 2 dosing buttons for accurate dosing shots. Super fast warm up and recovery time. (All on 15 amps). Rated for commercial use. Makes great espresso and dry steam. I had a Heat Exchanger machine with a Rotary pump and a E-61 group head. What a horrible experience. Never made good espresso, took forever to warm up, and forever to make another espresso. E-61 is a pain to maintain, too many parts. (Even had Eric's Thermometer and a Flow Control= Never helped!) Now the wish list: See through water tank with a lid! Better panels, maybe smaller footprint, (this is not a small machine).Maybe incorporate a tank with the Rotary pump version? Boiler check valve clip broke after 1 1/2yr.(too small) (Bought 3 because it is going to happen again & again). I can't make these fast enough for this awesome machine (It's always ready!).

I'm happy to see the machine performs well. I had it on my short list about three years ago. At the end I decided for the Lelit Elizabeth, mainly because of better dealer support (here in Europe) and the fact that I *wanted* a 58 mm portafilter. Clive Coffee is doing a good job in "modernizing" the looks, as the original version is worse. Still I love this thing. Also the original version is under 2000€ last time I checked.

I got a La Spaziale Dream T about two years ago and I love it. With the touch screen you can set brew and steam temperatures, including any offsets you decide on, set a power on and off time, individual user profiles for temperature and volumes, etc. It's a tank, and I love it. The portafilter size doesn't bother me, these days you can find pretty much anything you want for it. I wish the Dream models had preinfusion, but I have to say that what I'm getting in the cup is fabulous, so maybe it's not needed.

Dream model does have pre infusion, just not the Dream T... (tank model, I believe has an add-on that will). My Dream, almost 3 years old now, has 8500 pulls, doesn't miss a beat, and aside from the "cramped space" and the 53mm, does not have the drawbacks reviewer lists. In fact, I totally love my machine, as @hankrousseau4127 does.

Oh man, i have a lot of thoughts on La Spaz having owned a Dream. Firstly, I concur. These machines (La Spaz machines in general) are workhorses and aimed at a more casual crowd. There are two huge things that were not mentioned. 1. My Dream was extremely loud, not at first but over time. I am not sure why as I replaced the pump a few times and this did not help. But it is something that can be a deal breaker. 2. Service: Of course, you can take these anywhere to get service and there are a lot of shared interchangeable parts. However, servicing this machine at home is a B! It is tightly packed making swapping out parts a little like Tetris! Swapping a failed steam boiler took me 4 1/2 hours. 3. The plastic parts do not wear/age very well in my experience. Once those side panels come off, they never going to fit like they did. 4. Power consumption is high if you want fast recoveries. If I were to do this again, I would avoid the (t) varient of the Dream or and La Spaz machine. The plumbed varient has a rotary pump instead of the vib which is much better. I think the Dream series has a lot going for it but La Spaz doesnt seem interested in pushing the limits of the design. I find the Lucca A53 unconvincing because of the limitation mentioned in the video over the Dream. With the Dream you get more usable features for roughly the same price. All that said, I would mostlikely wait till i had enough money for a LM Micra or something else.
@Sprometheus
@Sprometheus Жыл бұрын
Interesting! Thanks for your insights. The noise on this one wasn’t offensive or surprising as I expect a higher amount with a vibration pump, but then again I only had it for a short time so it could very well get louder over time. I did mention that getting to things inside the machine, namely the pump, was more difficult than I’d like so I definitely under that one. Personally I didn’t notice much difference in power consumption, but I often have a lot of stuff running so it would really have to pull a lot of power to be noticeable. I haven’t used the Dream, but I’ve seen it and it definitely seems like it was the base for the Lucca, interesting to consider the two side by side. And yeah, the Micra is next level up for sure, I doesn’t have the programmable yields, but the rotary pump and 58mm portafilter go a long way once you hit the $2000 price point.
@philindeblanc
@philindeblanc 6 ай бұрын
10 years running the Vivaldi Mini S1 and the rotary pump is the quietest I have had between other machines that are of pro-sumer vibe pumps. I would check what you are placing he machine on top of to rule out something? I even use the shelf with cups, lol. I have taken it apart a few times with no serious issues on the panels...yeah, they are a bit align and fit and I have snapped off the peg, but no issues really. The insides is not much worse. Its got a flowmeter, so yes, that adds some piping, but...Its got a flowmeter! And di I hear plastic?? the only things plastic are the covers on the electricals. this beast is as metal as a machine can get. Stainless steam boiler, copper main and brass, and mostly copper piping with brass fittings.
@finder2267
@finder2267 6 ай бұрын
@@philindeblanc Three points: 1) I was referencing the vibratory Dream. 2) I'm afraid I have to disagree with the plastic and I think most users would side with the amount and quality. Plastic can differ from production runs. I always had to fight to get the machine back together. To be honest, it is never the same after the panels come off. The difference in quality between the plastic panels on my LM GS3 and the Dream is not compatible. 3) The fact that you have to take off all the panels to do any meaningful maintenance is a hassle. BTW, Vivaldi Mini and Dream are not the same machine. Is the Dream a bad machine, no! However, there are a lot of things that could be improved to make the Dream more competitive in todays market.
@philindeblanc
@philindeblanc 6 ай бұрын
True, they are not the same, and certainly quality can and often does differ between machines AND a decade in time. On the Vivaldi, the top tray gives you a look and some access, and so does the front under grouphead panel. If you need rear access to pump, boiler work, YES, it is all off. The pressure valve is accessible from front panel, which is a plus on the mini Vivaldi II S1. I guess they do have similar looks, as the Lucca A53 is very much along a Vivaldi, but I am not sure of the layout on the Dream or Dream T. I thought they were more similar. As far as the plastic vs the chrome boxes...I think it is also logical to think most people, who are spending a $2k and up on a espresso drink machine will want most metal parts, as it is longer wearing, and looks nice. Not many people are handling the sides and such of the machine. Yes, sounds like I agree with all you said, as they are all logical ;-). @@finder2267

I did consider this machine coming from a breville / sage / solis barrista express. I think that also features a 53mm portafilter so the toys I had could carry over. However there's a few things that made me opt for a profitec Pro 700 instead and I'm glad I made that choice 1. Rotary pump 2. Cost (mine only cost me 2400) 3. Wider availability (and thus cheaper) tools, because those 53mm bottomless portafilters can come at a premium because they're niche 4. Although repeatability with shot timers is nice, personally I'm more of a fan of weight based extractions. This can become cumbersome if you switch coffees regularly and the extraction is different between beans. In that scenario I'd rather have a lever actuation than a button timed actuation

I had a Dalla Corte Studio almost 2 years with 54 mm portafilter. I love it. You can make more easier consistent coffee than 58 mm and smaller dose coffee tastes more greater than at 58mm. Studio has rotary pump, 0,1 celsius degree setting option for water degree. Saturated group head as LM is also and it's boiler has no heavy metal (eg nickel, cadmium etc). DM is more affordable water chemicals (Mg etc) and ph than LM. Dalla Corte makes a 54 mm to 58 mm conversation set if you don't like the 54 mm.

La San Marco also has 53mm portafilters, but very deep baskets. I have always been told they made great shots, and were very easy to dial in, extremely forgiving. It is kinda shame that this niche market that pushes experimentation and exploration just skips this detail because as you mentioned, "my over engineered accessory wont fit". As always, thank you. I do not chase every latest 58mm "must have" accessory and usually wait until there are cheaper alternatives in the market. However those alternative brands do seem to be covering more portafilter sizes and so the disadvantage of not being 58mm may now be reduced. Thicker puck and possible less channeling could be a good thing for casual users as you mentioned. For now and my probable next machine I am staying with 58mm.

Of course, and thanks for watching. And yeah, the number of companies making tools for more sizes is expanding, seemingly by the day. If you already have a 58mm it just makes sense to stick with that size, otherwise there’s a cost of replacing or getting new tools and tampers, etc.

I've had my A53 Mini for 2 years and it's been great. I have the pre-infusion chamber installed in mine which increases pre-infusion time (not programmable though) however it vastly messed up volumetrics so that is pretty useless for me. I always have to pull my own shots. I am trading it in for another machine primarily due to lack of plumbing option which i find is the most annoying about the A53 Mini. Unlike a lot of competitors the A53 comes in two flavors: The Mini, which is vibratory reservoir-only machine, and the A53 which is rotary and plumbed-in only. So to switch from reservoir to plumb requires a whole new machine, which is where I'm at so I'm going to a machine that has both. Functionally, the machine has performed brilliantly and I pull more consistent and arguably "better" shots with it than I did the Gaggia Classic Pro (58mm), and I have found every accessory you'd want (Calibrated Tamper, Distribution tools, paper and metal puck filters, etc) in 53mm so really - I agree that size does not matter in this case.
@Sprometheus
@Sprometheus Жыл бұрын
I’m glad to see some folks have had it for awhile and have chimed in with their long term experience. I can definitely see how the pre-infusion chamber could mess with the volumetrics, but likely worth it in the long run. I do agree it’s odd they don’t have machines that can be both tank or plumbed. The other weird bit is the options with the rotary pump aren’t more expensive, which would really make the A53 a true competitor with the Micra, outside of the portafilter.

I think the A53 is most at home on the bar at a nice Italian restaurant that doesn’t have time to train its bartenders or waitstaff to be baristas, but needs after-dinner espresso and affogatos on the menu. Volumetrics are a big plus, and the aesthetic can work nicely there, plus it’s compact and you’ll never need to fit a 16oz latte cup under the spout.

Basically, Lucca A53 is a good machine with its price point. Some people would argue its 53mm portafilter. For my understand 53mm is not a big deal. The only issue with 53mm is lack of convenience to use, says it can not fit to regular dosing cup, tamper… There are something A53 should consider to upgrade. The most important one to me is the pump. Rotator pump is essential! Second, Pid system, I want to have more precise control. Finally, it only available at Clive Coffee, please come to Canada. Compare with E61 machine, I would pick A53, because: more safe to use at domestic setting with children. The group head from e61 is too hot, and dangerous to children. Also it is small in size, more portable.

I’m with you, I definitely prefer a rotary pump at this $2k+ price point. It is held back some being only from Clive. I wasn’t aware they don’t sell in Canada. And that’s a good point. A more serious machine than I’d be looking for at this time in my life, but I wouldn’t sweat the 53mm. I’m chugging along with my strong-for-the-price Breville Bambino, and that’s a 54mm. There are fewer gadgets for the size, but a better grinder and a well-executed WDT with a budget 3d printed tool is far more import than whatever geegaws a 58mm filter could use. I can get not wanting to downsize if you already had kit for a 58mm, rebuy things you already owned. But if you aren’t already locked into a particular size, there’s just so many things that matter more.

Extremely reliable and extremely good service and customer support from Chriss Coffee. The 53 mm PF is not an issue, just a bit different. I have both, a 58 and a 53 mm machine, and the only real difference is that the 53mm takes almost twice as long to pull a shot given the depth, while the 58 mm is shallower and wider. Agree that 53mm shouldn't play too much of a role in quality of the shots alone but a few questions come to mind specifically around shots consistency. How does a vibratory pump with the integrated grouphead but without a PID would stack against other vibratory machines with E61 and PIDs such as Profitec Pro 600, or even more fitting against Rancilio Silvia Pro X which besides its dual boiler/dual PID and its 1-6 sec preinfusion is also sporting a more palatable counter footprint. I've worked on a few machines in the past where I had to rely on externally-mounted brewhead thermometers for dialing in precision shots - there's certainly an added degree of complication one must factor into the workflow when thermal readings aren't available out of the box via PID or via bluetooth/app.

This is the best machine made! Listen to Clive Coffee (they Loved it so much they helped design the Lucca A53 with La Spaziale). E61 was invented in 1961, let it die. It is a horrible device! (not temp stable, and forever to heat, (weighs 9 lbs.). too many parts to maintain.

Ummm, it DOES have a PID. Just not a super wide adjustment and its more old school in the interaface, You can even offset the temp to mach the grouphead after Scace. Volumetric flowmeter as well. It gives you 1 degree from 91 to 97 temp readings. The rotary version is a 3-4 second preinfusion. Not adjustable on the water tank / vib pump model. What’s the concern with the reduced diameter? That puck thickness will lead to less extraction? As still all water travels through the entire puck, I don’t think this would be the case. Rather I‘d think that we would see less channeling due to increased puck thickness. At least I see a strong difference in channeling when working with 15g VST or an 18g VST and I believe this is also the reason why many cafés here in Germany work with 18gs even though the drink sizes are not as inflated as in the US.

With such a plethora of accessories, knowing how espresso making can turn (and very commonly turns) into hobby it's not rational for me to rip your customers off that joy of experimenting with screens, WDT tools (soon mechanized ones), baskets, tampers (spring loaded or those linear ones that make every tamp perfectly even) etc. It's shortsighted and not strategic IMO.
