Yes there is a lot of people in Mobile that don't want to see you have anything. Yes I'm married to the mother of my child. I do not go to clubs of hang in the streets all day. I have no felonies. It's not many jobs down here but if you work hard and stay focused you can make it.

Carolyn, I'm not so sure about that. I say that because I graduated from South Alabama with a degree in operations management that pay wise hasn't done me jack for good! Had I not gone back and put my aviation background to use I'd probably be saying "welcome to Walmart!" If you go and get a degree in computer science, nursing, teaching, medicine, or engineering you'll do okay. Pursue anything else and you are for the most part just pissing in the wind! Apart from that I know folks who work in trades that make a hell of a lot more than some folks who've been out of college 30 years. Sure school is a good thing but take it from me; you want to study something that's in demand. I to am from Mobile and yes Mobile IS a bitch....always has been always will be and I'm glad I don't work there no more. Far as I'm concerned Mobile is an old Indian word for "dead city!"

Slick D I live in Mobile as well and I feel that this inly shows one side of the city which is the hood. I am also married with four girls and yes they have the same father. People are so quick to judge a place or a person based on one sided views. For him to say no one from here wants to be Doctors, Lawyers, or Nurses anymore floored me. My sister is in nursing school and I just graduated college. So, I feel if they apply themselves they too can become productive model citizens who make good money so that they can relocate to explore better opportunities.

This is my city. So depressing to hear these young guys talking about the lack of opportunities and the feelings of helplessness. Especially since there are a good many jobs in the shipyards not two miles away. With all the manufacturing, Mobile's job market is booming for tradesmen.

This is my city and it's indeed disheartening to hear these guys talk about the depressing streets and no motivation. The guy being interviewed is not a dumb ass. He gets it, but the fact that he spells it out the only thing these people aspire to be is what the see in the streets is sad. With endless opportunities for education and learning skills, there is no sense for anyone to live such a lifestyle unless they chose it.

Grew up around brothers like this, right around the corner from where they are, on Kellogg Street in the RV Taylor projects. Many of these guys could and should have been more, but didn't want to leave the hood mentality behind. There are two types of brothers: Brothers trying to grow as men, and brothers trying to remain "faithful" to the streets. Guess which ones make it out? I tried to stay tight with the ones that were trying to grow as men and we helped each other rise out of the conditions. These fellas seem smart. I wish I could have reached them at some point and helped them along the way.

Maybe it's because that's where my family is but I love where I was raised and the place gave me a lot of good memories. I love going back. Have not been in a while. My daddy is from mobile. His daddy was in the air force during the 50s n 60s. We grew up in very rural south ga. But all thru the 90s we never missed a Mardi gras in mobile. It was a whole different world to me n my brother.. Haven't been there since like 99, maybe 2000..
