honestly I wouldn't say no to another Ottomans or France guide with the new AE-warscore numbers; I like to roleplay the big historical nations (and I'm not alone, there's a reason they're still the most played nations of the game) and through some min-maxing (like taking the -10% AE age effect before the guns of urban) I've finally been able to blob roughly as fast as the ottomen did historically on 1.32, and I can't wait to try the rebalanced experience with france.

A small tip for paypall state enjoyers: Buy yourself 2-3 cardinals when they are cheap at the start and appoint cardinals at your vassals from curia treasury. That way you can easily get 7 cardinal after annexing your opm vassals and generate huge amount of papal influence right from the start.

7:16 Sienna also makes glass, so if you get it quick, it's a good idea to prioritize getting it to 15 dev, getting 50 or more prestige, and embracing Renaissance, as those are the requirements for triggering the faceting event, which will swap the trade good in Sienna to gems, give the province a small but permanent boost to trade value and goods produced, and increase the value of gems by 50%.

24:52 If Hungary is allied to or a subject of Austria, and you *don't* want to break your alliance with the Hapsburgs for whatever reason, you can curry favors and ask for Dalmatia's Croatian cores via use of favors. It's a very niche use of the feature, but I certainly enjoy being able to grab the 2 or 3 cores my subject has on on an ally without having to completely ruin my relationship with them.

I do like that feature but I feel like the AI should refuse these requests under certain conditions. For example if it's an accepted culture, the correct religion and a cored province the AI should either outright refuse or you would have to give them a ton of ducats in exchange. It should also cost prestige and legitimacy to accept the request plus the AI should use that feature itself. It makes little historical sense why two nations competing for the same land are allied unless they are fighting a common foe. In general alliances and AE should be a lot less static in EU4, real politics were way more chaotic.

Started my papal state game a few days ago, most fun I've had playing and luckiest due to excommunications and vassal reconquests I manage to get nearly all of Italy bar a like 2 provinces before 1500 with no coalitions. Just a shame I started before the guide, either way good work my dude :)

The Excommunication CB works not only on provinces you border, but also on provinces you have claimed. So you could've fabricated a claim on Toulon before the war with Provence, thus gaining the third eligible province.

Great video as always. Noticed some missed opportunities same as i had in first run. 1) ae for subjugation of naples is tolerable, u might improve relations with couple of neighbors before accepting Naples peace deal. Also u can curry favors with aragon later for free sicily land. 2) BUT u should postpone naples war coz u wont be able to rival florence or even provence mb after u vassalize naples. 3) so u should go for ur rivals starting with smallest. So u can use ur excom cb on as many enemies as possible, starting with florence obviously. For that u need siena asap to border all 3 florence provinces 4) as an evil plan its better to feed italian opms to some of ur allies like genoa or milan, so that they are big enough to rival later and eat them up later with excom cb. Also it kills the possibility of italian coalition. PS: for naples war better give scoutage to both opm vassals and annex them exactly when accepting vassalage of naples. That way u have strong duchies with only naples left pPS its way more profitable economically to choose mission on high seas reform, and build up lightships to privateer constantinople. Most of the early game its more profitable than protecting trade anywhere

Internal mission can actually be super good. When you get the Vatican Library, combining the -2 unrest from that with Internal mission and humanist ideas means basically no rebels even at like 300% OE. Also, out of all EU4 content creators, I love your channel the most. But I'm going to be blunt - you should probably not repeat yourself so much when you do the commentary. For example, "So you'll attack one of these 4 tags... *few mins later* so like I said, attack one of these 4." I know you mean well and want the guide to be thorough, but that kind of confuses people, throwing them off and making the video feel like a drag. Hope you just see this as constructive criticism and don't get upset 😓, cheers!

Yea, I agree about the unrest being good 100%. If you blob really hard, manpower is never an issue, but overextension is. Don't want to deal with particularistic rebels!

True faith is pretty useless when you blob because most of the provinces you will conquer later on will not be your religion. And those are the most likely to rebel. For really big-time blobbing I suggest going Islamic anyway (not as the pope obviously). The Dhimmi estate is just too damn overpowered.

Religious Diplomats isn't a part of Origins! I don't have the dlc yet but I was able to do it in my aragon game and it really helped keep my subjects loyal

Don't forget that your vassal Urbino has a core in the province of Urbino which is owned by Venice, so you could in theory split venice three-way between yourself, Milan and austria, with the reconquest CB to boot

I thought it is Ravenna, and that you as Papal States already start with a core there. I usually just do reconquest war as first war with Papacy. Ally Austria, curry favor or promise land, curry favors with other allies, get Swiss Guard mission and hire Swiss guard, and declare war.

As the papal states you dont get a lot of AE because everyone is improving relations with you (untill the protestants and reformists rise up) so you have like a 50 -80 years of a lot of expantion

Please do a saluzzo guide, it’s such an underrated OPM due to its starting position, but you get an insane traditions and can form Sardinia-Piedmont into Italy or even France if you expand enough in that direction.

I did papal run twice or thrice and honestly harded than AE is holding your subjects in check cuz after subjecting Naples all af them become instantly disloyal, however once you annex the opms naples becomes insane boost to your campaign. Meanwhile you deal with your subjects your AE is down and with some of luck France will be still at war with England and won't join war against Provence. Damn I'd like to play with you guys singleplayer tends to be booooring even on very hard

You can vassal Napals, most of northern Italy will coalition you but you can deal with it using the papal mechanics to keep relations high enough to manage. In mine the coalition fired but Venice didn’t join and big daddy Austria came to my side. Napals will be pretty rebellious for a long time but you can keep them under control. I’m not sure if the AE has gone up with the new update

You made sure to say "Check if you can excommunicate them" a few times. What exactly are the requirements for being able to excommunicate a country/what would prevent you from doing so before declaring war on them?

The only requirement is for The Papal State to have low opinion of a nation in order to excommunicate them. So basically rivalry, hostile, outraged modifiers are right there for the picking. If a country bought the indulgence for their sins, that will prevent The Papal State from excommunicating the said nation for a few years, and if you are not in the Catholic religion, then they don't have any authority over you.

Normally: the target must have bad relations with both curia controller and Papal States if Papal States exists. If PS is the curia controller, it's all based on PS relations.

If you are not afraid of AE, Ally Austria and Castile and Milan, when (if) the vassalize Naples event fires, take the full vassal option and go to war asap (before they get allies), and full vassalize them. The AE will be huge and you will likely get a coalition, however with Austria and Castile it wont fire. After the coalition dies out you can reclaim Naples cores in Sicily, integrate Naples and you are good to go. Reclaim the holy lands, etc.

Played Papal States right after origins DLC. Do everything he did except I recommend allying Austria, Milan, and Genoa. Join HRE and build influence with Genoa. Build up army, with mercs, have 15 galley and 10 transports. No CB Byzantines with Genoa for their navy. Do it before 1448. Vassalize them and take Athens, give it back to Byzantines. Next go after Venice, Naples, and provence. Then clean up Italy. When the shadow empire triggers, stay in HRE or you lose Austria as an Ally. Eventually trade Genoa and Milan for Poland and England. Hopefully Austria allies Poland and rivals Spain is optimal. The entire game I never had a single nation declare war on me because I was in HRE and had super powerful allies. Make sure to follow your mission tree, it will make expanding into Italy much cheaper with lower aggressive expansion.

just a little tip on the pronunciation of Italian names: in Italian "ch" is always a "k" sound, "c" is a "k" sound in front of "a", "o" and "u" , a "tS" sound in front of "i" and "e"(like in the name Che Guevara) . So "Marche" is read as "MarKe" like the name Mark, it's written like that because the letter K didn't exist in italian and we needed a way to distinguish between a "hard C" and a "soft C" .
