Volvo has built a long-standing reputation of offering luxury cars with higher levels of comfort and safety over its competitors. The #VolvoS60 plays in the heart of the compact luxury sedan segment and it received a full redesign for 2019. For 2020, changes are slim, but we got our hands on the more comfort oriented #S60Inscription for with, complete with massaging front seats, the 316 HP turbo/supercharged engine, and a more comfort oriented suspension tune which should give this model #S60 an even cushier ride over the more sport oriented R-Design trims.

Good morning guys! This video is one that we filmed back in Sept. For 2021, Volvo has made very little changes to the S60 but we heard rumors of them adding AWD to the T5 engine and discontinuing the T6 engine option. Sounds like Volvo is getting ready to move their lineup to mostly PHEV's and full BEV vehicles. The T6 engine is still much preferred to us over the T5, so pick this up while you still can!

@Keej Vaj only the nissans/infinitis with the cvt’s. All the nissans/infinitis are not junk they have motors that can run forever and offer the best value for luxury and performance. They also make the best looking mainstream and luxury cars. Also you get a lot for your money. They are not all junk. If you are looking at one with a cvt lease it or if you finance it get drivetrain warranty for as long as you can. But if you are looking at one without a cvt go ahead and buy it and you wont regret it. They make one of the best v6/v8 motors out there.

True, and 5.4 to 60 in a car like this is really plenty fast, most hot hatches don't even come close. The reviewer doesn't really get this car when he wants more 'passion' (louder exhaust, stiffer suspension for faster cornering and less comfort, etc.).
@williamlong2682
@williamlong2682 3 жыл бұрын
I actually disagree with the statement that the S60 needs more “passion behind the wheel.” I appreciate that Volvo bucked the trend of this segment and took a more comfort and luxury oriented focus with this. No one else is really doing that other than maybe Mercedes with base versions of the C Class. I think there is certainly passion in the S60, but it just takes the form of style and comfort, and that’s totally okay. Not every entry in this segment needs to deliver thrilling driving dynamics and hair-on-fire acceleration, which is what Sofyan seems to be saying here. This is easily in my top 3 for this segment, and unpopular opinion, but I would take this over a C Class in a heartbeat.

The problem is, according to many reviews the S60 isn´t that comfortable either...
@vomErsten
@vomErsten 3 жыл бұрын
Audi has always erred on the side of comfort over sport, and an A4/5 is much more comfortable than the S60 while being both quicker AND more fuel efficient for the same price. There might be a marginal safety advantage on the Volvo, but frankly the A4 is a more competent vehicle in every other department.
@williamlong2682
@williamlong2682 3 жыл бұрын
@@vomErsten On the comfort-to-sport spectrum, I’d honestly put the A4/A5 smack in the middle, and I’d put the S60 (R-Design aside) further towards the comfort end. A4/A5 are certainly more daily driver livable than many entries in this segment, but don’t seem to be trying to be as much of a luxury cruiser as, say, this S60 or luxury line C300 models. Fair point on them being faster and more fuel efficient at the same time, but I find their aesthetic to be sterile and conservative to a fault, personally. The S60 may not drive quite as well, but it has enough other redeeming qualities for it to likely be my personal choice over an A4/A5. That’s just me, though.
@vomErsten
@vomErsten 3 жыл бұрын
@@williamlong2682 It really does depend on the trim. MB is incredibly bipolar, with the normal trims being snooze-mobiles and the AMG trims being nuts. Audi has a tighter, more consistent ride quality that results in their A-level cars being a little more aggressive but their RS-level cars being too soft when compared to their MB counterparts. BMW is consistently the quickest and sportiest of the bunch. Overall perceptions of each brand are shaped by their performance options by the design of their marketing, and from that perspective is where I come from saying Audi is the comfortable/practical one. I've also driven an A5 and it really just floats along the road; not my cup of tea, but it was way more plush than the stiff S60. Definitely agree that the Volvo is a looker and the Audi is kind of bland. If the Volvo S60 Polestar Engineered drove like an Audi S4, I'd be a customer.

@@williamlong2682 I've driven a T5 S60 for over a year now. I'd say that gas mileage is average. At first I was bit annoyed (and you have to use premium gas) but then I remembered that this car is 4000 lbs and they use much stronger high boron steel. Long story short, you're much more likely to survive a crash with minimal injuries in a S60.

I can tell you this a person seeking a Volvo is not cross shopping a tesla, I sold them for 2 years in Denver and I never heard that word come out of their mouth. Most buyers their were older as in 45+ or young educated families in their 30's wanting luxury and safety that Volvo offers. Their not falling behind in safety believe me, steering assist is not safety its an assistance program. Check out their latest crash testing, it took 2 55 mph impacts to make the A pillar collapse. Their have been plenty of people who have lost their lives in other cars unfortunately due to poor safety, but assistance programs have certainly helped to prevent crashes.

Volvo has been and is the safest car for the past 30 years. Plus they are super confortable and the materials used are way better than cars of the same price range. (So you wont have to worry about bad material selection or manufacturing errors caused by a rush to bring cars to market.... as you see with most Teslas). Volvo is only for the people who want luxury, comfort without the need to show off in the street.

I must say I probably will never go to another car dealership or car brand. I really do feel like he might have a grudge against Volvo or something. @Big Cod I have an S60 with a T6 engine since late 2019. I have about 16k miles on it. Reliability problems: - My backseat 12v was not working(fixed under warranty) - I had a check battery light(as per Volvo, it was 'reset' and has since had no problems) -I had a check engine light which was actually an emission pipe issue, which was again fixed under warranty. I wish it: -had a button to immediately engage the cameras. I put the car in reverse then back to drive to trigger it. -picked up speed a bit faster. sometimes the supercharger has a delay before picking up speed. There is a polestar optimized option but it doesn't on paper seem worth the price. -didnt wear the brake pads so much using pilot assist. Otherwise, it's a fantastic car. I'm not a very fast driver but 315hp is MORE than enough for me. It's extremely comfortable and this is an opinion, but I believe its design will age well a decade from now. I get many compliments on its look and comfort. The seats required some adjusting to my taste, but I love it. I'd say it's wise to get this vehicle with a warranty. I own and plan on keeping this thing for as long as possible. Every time I go inside, I take a look at the S60 and think, "Wow, this is such a wonderful car." Even years later.

There's nothing wrong with the size of the screen, just because other auto manufactures are fighting for the biggest screen award, doesn't make it better. It's just a bigger distraction. At the same time, no reviewer can come up with a good argument for continuing to just keep making screens bigger but if one manufacture does it then automatically makes it better....not. Savagegeese couldn't have put it better saying screens are getting bigger just for the sake of size, not because it is actually more practical or usable.

I don't mind tapping to get heated seats or heated steering wheel, it's okay if the tech is evolving and there is no button anymore... however, I dislike having to tap 5 times to configure the massaging seat, at this point it feels gimmicky and I won't bother using it most of the time. I think the issue is not the touch screen, it's the lack of good GUI inside that touchscreen to access quickly the different settings. It's NOT BAD, but it could be better!

Throughout the review you say " I wish it had...or, for just $$$ you could add". Then you close with how the cost adds up to an overpriced vehicle. Driving experience, you forget that the majority of buyers are buying this car for the wives daily driver or a older guys comfort ride. Most buyers probably have a truck or sports car in the garage. Typical reviewer syndrome, want every feature for less money. Longterm reliability and service history rarely come into the conversation. Which, is my major concern with these high tech cars once out of warranty. Just a few comments. I never miss your videos.

The SUV's and the wagons are what hold their value, as that's what most people want from Volvo. An XC90 Inscription is 65-75 new you can negotiate off that, after 3-4 years 40-60k miles their usually in the 30's-40's. Yes a t5 momentum in any model falls off as they are the lease specials, and less desirable. It's the same for bmw, mercedes, audi.

I think you're missing the point with the Volvo here. Red calipers on the luxury Inscription trim? Come on Sofyan. BMW, Audi etc already have the sporty angle covered. No one is going to the Volvo showroom looking for a sporty car, and when they did have them (V8s, S60R/V70R etc.), they didn't sell all that well. I think the S60 is aimed at comfort and luxury with a sleek look, and they've nailed it. If you look at their SUVs, they've applied the same formula with a lot of success. The XC90 and XC60 are not sporty, but they're comfortable and beautiful and the sales reflect that. The S60 just has the misfortune of trying to compete in a shrinking segment. If you can have an XC60 for the same amount of money (and you can), then few people will end up choosing the sedan. It's no surprise it isn't setting the sales charts on fire. Pretty sure all the other luxury brands are experiencing declining sales for their sedans as well. I applaud Volvo for going their own way and not trying to be Germany 2.0. How well is that working out for Cadillac, Genesis etc?
@vomErsten
@vomErsten 3 жыл бұрын
No one is going to Volvo showrooms for the S60 even now. Story time: I got interested in Volvo when they started taking performance more seriously with their previous generation S60. Then the new one came out and was gorgeous and was marketed as being sporty, and early reviews were encouraging. This year, I went to a Volvo dealer to drive a T6 R-Design based on this initial data; it was horrible. The shift paddles didn't really respond well, the steering was completely dead with a lane-keep that tried to fight me making a left turn, the engine had a delay on spool-up that the competition just doesn't have...not sporting at all. The sales person even told me they had been getting a lot of interest in the car from customers of other brands for its looks, but few buyers. I suspect because it drives like shite. So now that Volvo has publically committed to divesting themselves of ever building anything fast or fun, this car will die a slow death from neglect.
@paulg9350
@paulg9350 3 жыл бұрын
@@vomErsten I owned a previous generation 2015.5 V60, and the new gen S60/V60 performs better than the previous one, no question. If you look at the previous gen sales, there were barely any R-Design and Polestar versions sold versus regular T5 and T6 models. The shift paddles on an 8 speed auto were never going to compete with the dual clutch transmissions of the competition. The lane keep assist can be easily turned off with one button. The engine delay was not noticeable to me.. did you have it in the dynamic mode? Ultimately if you were looking for a sporty car, Volvo was never going to be the one. BMW, Audi and AMG can help you out there. Comfort and good looks? There's a Volvo for you. I ended up with the 2019 Volvo V90 Cross Country T6 AWD because I cared more about luxury and comfort in my bumper to bumper crawl of a commute, and this new generation of Volvos is noticeably better than the previous generation in that regard.
@vomErsten
@vomErsten 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulg9350 So, let me address that comment about the 8-speed up front. What you claim about an 8-speed automatic not being able to compete with a DCT is patently untrue. Audi, Lexus, BMW, and even Jaguar all use 8-speed automatics in their respective higher performance cars in this class and they are lightning quick. It is to the point that they don't bother developing the DCT anymore, and the only DCTs still in use are older models on mostly FWD-based platforms with lower power output (i.e. an A4 still has the DCT, but the S4 has an auto). Most of these brands are using the ZF8, but Lexus is using an Aisin unit similar to Volvo. Volvo simply did not tune their transmission well, full-stop. Yeah, it can shift on its own just fine but I do not ever drive my S3 in automatic mode and, since shift paddles were a front-row feature of the R-Design prior to MY21, I expect my transmission to respond immediately when I use them. Yes, I did have the car in dynamic mode. No, it did not have the Polestar tune on it, but from browsing around Swedespeed it sounds like that doesn't help much anyway (and Polestar Engineered models, by all accounts, also have atrocious manual shifting). If Volvo had not come out of the gate marketing the S60 on its sporty driving dynamics, I would have never given it a second look. But they did and I bet they were hoping to capture customers from Audi and BMW. But they didn't set the car up correctly to win over the more performance-minded among us and then they further sabotaged the effort by announcing their intent to suck the joy from all of their cars going forward, and that was that. This car is selling miserably and it's not entirely attributable to the rise of the crossover; it's simply not what people want from a luxury sport sedan. Heck, it's not even more comfortable than the competition; it's too stiffly damped with a skittery rear end, worse NVH, and the seats are just par.
@paulg9350
@paulg9350 3 жыл бұрын
@@vomErsten I still don't think the 8 speed is tuned poorly. Again, in regular everyday use, it works great. Compared to your S3? Definitely not going to be as sporty or responsive. Where is this marketing of its sporty dynamics that you speak of? All the ads I saw were about standing apart from the crowd and unique design, nothing about sportiness. Also, I was curious and looked up the sales figures. The S60 is not doing as badly as everyone claims anecdotally. For Q3 2020: Acura TLX - 5,707 Alfa Romeo Giulia - 2,291 Audi A4 - 5,958 BMW 3 Series - 8,243 Cadillac CT5 - 4,001 Genesis G70 - 2,732 Infiniti Q50 - 3,868 Jaguar XE - 400 Lexus IS - 3,629 Mercedes Benz C-Class - 7,215 Volvo 60-Series - 5,677

It’s because luxurious ride alone doesn’t sell that well. If comfort/plush ride was such a selling point, companies like Buick would’ve been a sales leader long ago. @@VaunShiz Granted luxury doesn't sell as well as it once did, however, the take rate on those sport versions aren't volume sellers either. The AMG, M, RS, etc started selling more when they were offered as trim lines as opposed to specific models. M-Sport versus M3, for example. It also doesn't have to be an either or. There is room for both sport and luxury trim lines. Most buyers are looking for the lowest price with a luxury name.

Couldn't agree more with your point about the downsizing of engines. But it's not necessarily about being sporty, it's about having that power to waft away regardless of the speed. Merc are doing the same, you used to be able to buy top Mercs with V12s, but not anymore. This is what I don't get about how the industry thinks, or at least the so-called environmentalists. I mean just because you want a V8 or whatever, doesn't mean you want to drive around red-lining the damned thing all day long. You want it because it's there if you need it. And never forget the Top Gear test they did with Prius against a Camero (or was it an M3?). The Camero only had to cruise behind the Prius as the Prius drove hell for leather around a track. The Camero didn't break a sweat and the Prius ended up burning more fuel! This is my own experience driving tiny engine cars (in Europe). I got the feeling those little engines were burning more fuel because just keeping up with traffic required those little engines to work so hard!

I love the design of the Volvo's but I wish that they would spend a little more time on their infotainment and give it some more functionality. I am not expecting "iDrive" levels of sophistication but I think they can do a better job organizing everything and having actual buttons for the heated seats and climate control. While "simplicity" is their objective in terms of interior design, I think turning the infotainment screen sideways and having a 11-13" increan with climate controls right below it would really clean up the center console area! That is just my two cents but all that gloss black just frustrates me. I wish they made it a matte finish to compliment the wood. Also, having a turbocharged, supercharged, and battery assitisted engine is a bit much, feels like something could easily break costing thousands as well.
