I also applaud Acura for going with a double wishbone suspension over struts in the front. I wish they provided Sofyan w/ a better color. The metallic red or the new metallic violet color are gorgeous, especially in combination with some of the more exciting interior colors such as the black/red or black/tan color combinations.

Oh make no mistake, I've had my critiques of Sofyan, especially when reviewing "certain" American cars. He's gotten better about being a bit more critical of the shortcomings of more vehicles than he used to. The infotainment is a bit confounding, especially considering nearly every competitor offers a touchscreen for good reason. But I also think he was a bit unfair to the 2.0T. No manual, no dual clutch, no panoramic sunroof and engine sounds coming through the speakers. Then when you spend more money on sportier tires, it’s probably uncomfortable??? This all sounds horrible to me. I really don’t get the direction of Acura, but it’s obvious they’re not trying to appeal to many of the old school Acura and Honda folks. This is not a boy racer car. This is a man's car. Spacious, stylish interior (including the back), adequate power, and stunning exterior. It is not for drag races or track days. It's not an M4; it's an A6, regardless of how they're marketing it. Slow off the line. The turbo spool up is ... unhurried, lackadaisical, and smooth in normal mode. It doesn't pin your lady friend to the seat; it slowly hugs her with soft leather. The sound system is deeply impressive. The engine does its job, carving traffic with little effort. It'll throw you around a little bit sport mode, but it never feels punchy like the IS300 or surging like the A4. It shines in comfort mode, gliding over rough pavement like an Outback. The AWD is pretty slick too, coming to bear with invisible ease like an Audi or Subaru system. To my complete surprise, the overly stylized center stack is actually ergonomically functional, even though it will take me forever to get used the transmission buttons. The HUD is huge, compared to the Mazda6, and very uncluttered. The gauge cluster graphics are bit dense, but decipherable. The touch pad is intuitive and easy to master while driving, unlike the hideous Lexus interface. As for the comparisons I'm seeing to the Accord, they are not comparable vehicles, regardless of 0-60 times.

Overall, I think Acura could have done more with this redesign. I'm assuming the increase in length was needed to accommodate the type s engine. I wish Acura would have kept the v6 and use the tune from the rlx at 310hp. That would be a badass base engine. That same engine with a turbo could have 400hp or better. The v6 is kind of what made the TLX stand out from most of the competition and the sound was intoxicating. If this car weighs 4000lbs I'm guessing the type s will be around 4200lbs🤔. But, complicating controls for the sake of jaming so much features doesn't make sense. I just watched MotorWeek's retro review of the 1994 Honda Accord EX with a 5-spd. That was the best Honda Accord & one of the best Japanese sedan IMHO! I think car manufacturers, especially Honda, should rethink or revisit what made cars in the 90's great. Bring back the great, simple, & fun driving experience.

Cars were lighter back then, cars had to get stronger for crash tests. Electronic power steering is much more efficient, lighter but lacks road feel. Car manufacturers are learning every year on how to improve their products! Totally different ball game now, I do think car manufacturers are learning and listening!

As a current tlx owner with the non turbo engine I can't give any support for Acuras shift to turbos especially on the 4 cyl. The turbo engine will appeal to lease owners over long term buyers since everyone knows turbo are problematic over and around 100k miles. The main reason I purchased the tlx over anything European is to get a naturally aspirated non turbo engine that will last 200k+ miles. Japanese cars consider reliability as proof of their superior build quality over European cars and Acura takes pride knowing their brands in service record destroys the record of Audi/BMW/Mercedes. If they mess up this turbo with rebuilds running rampant It'll be detrimental to the brands future. I won't be buying the new tlx but will be watching close. It's saddening that more brands are succumbing to turbos just to squeeze a mile per gallon here or there which means nothing to me. Thanks Redline Reviews for the detailed video though!

In really not a fan of new age Honda and their embracing of turbo engines. They definitely won’t last as long as older NA models.
@HerrPoopschitz4 жыл бұрын
This isnt the 80s/90s guys...modern turbos last waaay longer than 100k. Many ecoboost F150 owners, yes even Ford, have gone far over 200k w/ original turbos.
@TomSawyerEaglePro4 жыл бұрын
@@tails300 - I agree and I've been thinking that this whole time with Honda and I really don't believe these turbo engines will last as long and be problem free. There's a lot of bad articles on older turbos from many manufacturers. I always buy the non turbo engine myself on any car because I drive a lot for work (25,000 miles a year) and I can't have a car with issues when it gets 4 years old at 100k miles.
@TomSawyerEaglePro4 жыл бұрын
@@HerrPoopschitz - I've had 2 friends with bad experiences with turbos, one with an Audi A4 that needed a 4.5k turbo rebuild at 92,000k miles, she bought the car new and never even pushed it hard so needless to say I lost faith in Audi quick besides other issues her car had. Had a family member with blown twin turbos on a bmw as well at 120k. If you look up turbo problems at high mileage many articles/issues exist. Ford has done a much better job with all their ecoboost turbos since they mass produce them and I did consider a twin turbo Ford but I will say if I was going to trust a turbo it would be from Honda or Ford and definitely not a German car. My issue with the tlx turbo switch is there was nothing wrong with the engine choices offered from the 2015-2020 tlx. Everyone loved the naturally aspirated 4 cylinder, it's just fun to drive and gets you to 60 in the high 6 second range with over 30mpg consistently. From a performance standpoint the 2021 tlx has been upgraded from 6.9 seconds to 60 with the normal 4cyl to 6.5 seconds with the turbo and gas mileage actually went down with the turbo engine to my surprise. It's not that much of a performance gain. I love the exterior styling of the new tlx without a doubt but I'm just thinking Acura should've kept the base non turbo engines that we current owners loved and then offered a turbo type s variant.
@HerrPoopschitz4 жыл бұрын
Tom Sawyer Guess I shoulda put a disclaimer about German cars, but I always consider their lack of reliability common knowledge. My gf has a 15 TLX V6...been great and gets amazing mpgs (36-38 at 70-75), however the reqd $1k timing belt change isnt something shes looking fwd to and is talking about using that $ toward a new car when the time comes. The new 4cyl uses a chain, so no $1k maintenance fee. I trust honda engineering to put out a good product, and if they dont, to correct it, as they did when the 5 spd auto went out on my Accord 15 years ago. As for performance I agree, disappointing. On the other hand, as w/ all factory turbo cars, if you’re willing to give up the warranty there’s probably a ton of power avail w/ a simple tune.

The outside body aesthetics, 270 hp, tight interiors with best-in-class hands free operations for the time and nav - it's a total headscratcher as to why they wouldn't just iterate/evolve on that as the base 🤔

The infotainment system is not as bad as some reviewers are saying. It's actually brilliant, but people need to come to it with an open mind. Same thing with the drive selector. It's almost annoying listening to people complain about it. As far as the tuning button and the volume knob, here are my thoughts. If you think about it, once you set your presets, you will rarely use the tuning button. If you had two knobs, it is likely that you would be grabbing the wrong one quite frequently, which would probably be more frustrating. Anyways, nice review, as always.

Germans still use cheat-devices on their engines. Don't let the VW Dieselgate fool you. They still know how to hide that technology that allows their engines to breathe much better for great acceleration and better MPGs. It's all about the restrictions, and Germans cheat on that. Need proof? Why do all the German cars have hidden horsepower? Why are German car companies who nickel and dime customers for every option giving away FREE horsepower???? THAT'S the reason why the Germans get great power and still achieve great MPGs.
@rc12983 ай бұрын
The Acura TLX would be at the top of my list except for the horrible mpg numbers. I have a 2016 Honda Accord V6 with 278 HP and it averages 26 mpg in around town driving. On extended highway drives (of at least 15 or so highway miles) the Accord will easily beat 30 mpg. In fact I have averaged over 40 mpg once on a 100 mile drive but more typically it will average 32-34 mpg on the highway.

Because German car companies still use cheat devices. That's why. But I said this already, and I'm sure Sofan's sassy husband will delete this response again.

@@PlaceHandleHere Ok, but Honda's own prior gen V6 (as in my 2016 Accord) is vastly more fuel efficient than either the turbo 4 or the turbo v6 in the TLX models. I can maybe understand the Type S V6 being worse but not the turbo 4 cyl. So Honda has the capability to do better fuel efficiency-wise.
