What is the meaning of the term church?
The word "church" is "ecclesia" in Latin or "ekklesia" in Greek.
Ekklesia means "called out."
The word was commonly used to a group of people called out or called together as an assembly or convocation. Usually, these assemblies gathered for a religious purpose.
Ekklesia was the Greek word used in the Old Testament to describe the People of God, namely the Israelites who gathered at Mt. Sinai to receive the Law of Moses.
Therefore, early Christians used this same term to make the connection between their people and the People of God in the Old Testament.
The term Church is used in three ways:
1) Liturgical Assembly: People gathered together in prayer or for the Mass
2) A Local Community: parish community
3) The Universal Community of Believers: Catholic Church
But what about the term "Church"?
The actual word "church" is derived from the German word "kirche" which means "what belongs to the Lord."
Let's reflect on this for a moment.
As members of the Church, what do the root words mean for us today?
1) Be called out
The Church is meant to stand out from the rest of the world for the good it brings to the world.
2) Be united
The Church is called out together as one people of God and should seek to be united together.
3) Be the Lord's
The Church is more than a fun club of holy people. The Church belongs to the Lord and that often leads to humble service as a response to God's great love for his people.
