The stereotype of Ultramarines being inflexible rule followers is dumb. Yes they tend to follow a more structured approach to war like most modern militaries do, but they have had no trouble adapting when they’ve had to (as shown in nearly all their books).
@656delta Жыл бұрын
While I was in the army a lot of the older guys said "You're not a good NCO unless you've had an Article 15 (or two)." Reinforced by USMC COL Chesty Puller's famous words: "If the Marine Corp expected you to behave they wouldn't dangle a good conduct medal in front of your face. Now take me to the brig so I can see the real Marines." Aeonid Thiel exemplifies these comments.

It was when Guilliman expressed doubt whether those trapped in Calth can still be saved. He knows there is more to this so going back to save them is very slim. But Thiel reminded him that even if it took years, they will come back, not knowing coming back means that they would have to win the heresy in the end, so Guilliman cracked a smile about Thiel's optimism even if unintentional.

Aeonid was a needed warrior within the Imperium as he was perhaps one of the few loyalists that was preparing for the worst when it came to his fellow space marines, and perhaps without him his Legion would have been destroyed without any hope of survival against the Horus Heresy.

Hmmmm. Not really, Marines are pack animals as it were whereas Custodes are individuals in battle. I think this got explained in The First Heretic. Argel Tal was watching them fight and was saying "There something different, I cant put my finger on it," Then the penny dropped in his mind and he outlined what I wrote above. They dont fight as a team like marines do.
@Synthonym Жыл бұрын
@@JamesLaserpimpWalsh Custodes absolutely do fight as teams, it simply doesn't look it in battle because they have no need for tactical orders or traditional chains of command. Each Custodes knows through literally thousands of years of training precisely what to do, and what their comrades are doing, at any given moment. They don't need specific orders or management because of it.

What I don't understand about this is that Dorn was known to play war games against his brothers. Guilliman is said to have run theoreticals on how to defeat all of his brothers. Perterabo did the same. Russ is basically known to enjoy fighting legions. This just seems like some uptight ultramarines captain crying because a Sargeant thought of something they didnt.

I always liked to think about it the way most people would say "I could never kill another person" Astartes only saw other Astartes as people, so it was harder for them to cross that mental line. That's what makes The Space Wolves, Dark Angels and World Eaters so special, they all killed Astartes before the Heresy. I assume Alpha Legion also probably did, but the vast majority of legionaries were shocked at the thought, even amongst the Word Bearers during their censure, it was really only a few that were ready to fire.
