If there is a single moment that forever swung the Heresy firmly in the favor of the Ruinous Powers it was the Calth Atrocity. To me, it is second only to the breach of the webway by Magnus, which consigned the Ten Thousand and the Emperor to a unwinnable war beneath the Imperial Palace, as the greatest death knell to the Emperor's grand dream and the beginning of the end. Calth and the resulting ruinstorm was the hammer blow that ensured that two of the remaining loyalist legions best equipped to break the siege and win the Solar War would not be able to stand upon Terra in it's darkest hour. The Ultramarines and Dark Angels were denied the chance to stand by the Emperor of Mankind against the forces of the Warmaster.

A lot of the OG lore of 40K Is based in other works including Dune, I think with that as a basis I assume the way The Emperor sees the future Is similar he catches glimpses, strands see different possible outcomes but has to figure out how to get there, I think he knew about a betrayal but did not know the full details; I think he alienated some of his sons, the less useful, the damaged and the ones unbendingly set in their ways, Lorgar included, but knowing the consequences of faith in the long run would mean in my opinion that would had to know also that Magnus and Horus would turn and I think those were two of the ones he intended to keep on his side. I accept though that the power might be random he could see with absolute clarity something a millennium away but see things through an extreme fog that are much closer in time.

In regards to Monarchia, wasn't the point less about idolatry and more about expediency? The WB were spending too much time setting up religious cults and it was hurting their compliance KPIs. Ultramarines weren't sent as paragons, but because they were also a bit slow due to setting up all the Imperial bureaucracy on every world they brought into the Imperium. This was a warning to them, and a punishment. I might be wrong of course, but I feel like I have read/heard that reasoning a few times.

Major canon conflict. Calth can't have happened. Ultramarines were the leading force of the Great Scouring, because they were at full strength since largely untouched in the Heresy. You find it in any and all the sources. To add insult to injury, the Ultramarines, still at full strength because Ultramar could constantly replenish losses with new recruits, generated "only" 23 Chapters in the Second Founding, and you can also find this in any and all the sources. Calth never happened, or at very least never happened in the terms described by HH cheap and subpar authors.

Lorgar was never under mind control nor corruption. He chose his path. The Emperor is an asshole, but free will is still a thing. The only Traitor Legion with any legit grievance is the Thousand Sons.

Personally, one of the things I would have changed about Lorgar is his perceived cowardice. Erebus is the shadowy coward; Lorgar, especially when fuelled by zealotry should be one of the most blindly brave soldiers of The E/chaos gods. When getting beaten by Horus his zealous ideals should have fuelled a rage within him that would have given credence to him putting up a good fight vs Horus. I get him being a tortured soul beaten down by abuse, but that should lead into the zealous rage even more. Frankly, I want him to have a moment where he beats the crap out of Erebus and Kor Phaeron
