I grew up in a family with a Hebrew Roots bent and it was always understood that salvation was by grace through faith in Jesus alone. The observance of feast days, the Torah, and the Sabbath were always viewed in light of Jesus, not in addition to it. If others have a similar experience, I'd love to know! Does the Hebrew Roots movement (in the majority....not the minority) believe in a works-based faith, because that hasn't been my experience.

@Jeremiah Lawson wrong. Everyone who has ever been or will ever be saved is by grace through faith. Read the words of Yeshua (Jesus). I'm paraphrasing here, many will come to him and say Lord lord didn't we do this and didn't we do that? And he will say away from me you workers of LAWLESSNESS. You are not granted eternal life by trusting in your own rightousness but you cannot refuse to obey God and expect him to reward you with eternal life!

@Jeremiah Lawson Faith and works are two sides of the same coin. Faith without works is DEAD, as in you will die. But that does not mean you are saved by works. Do you see the difference?

@Jeremiah Lawson Well... Here is what he said in the flesh: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Matthew 5:17-18 NIV Pretty sure that Heaven and Earth are still here.

@Jeremiah Lawson lol, literary genre. That is absolutely not what he was saying. First of all he said until ALL is accomplished. Have you ever read the prophets sir? If you have you may want to read them again because they will tell you that very much is still to be accomplished.

Hey Remnant Radio, Great interview! But I feel that it is insufficient to have one perspective on this subject. I know that Dr. Chaffey said that he is painting the movement with a broad brush, and indeed, he does so a lot, almost to the point where I think he is creating a strawman out of the Messianic Jewish community as well. I think many of the positions are misunderstood not just by Dr. Chaffey but by Western Christians in general. You should interview someone like Rabbi Itzhak Shapira of Ahavat Ammi ministries or Dr. Rabbi Mark Kinzer of the Zera Avraham Congregation or Dr. Rabbi Baruch Korman of V'ahavtah Yisroel or Dr. Rabbi Joseph Shulam of Netivyah Ministries, or Dr. Rabbi David Rudolph, who are Messianic Jews and still live out Jewish customs as an Orthodox Jew would. None of these people identify with the Hebrew Roots movement but with the Messianic Jewish Community, and I know that they would disagree with or at least provide more nuance to many of the points that Dr. Chaffey is making. just as Frederica Mathewes-Greene provided much nuance to the East Orthodox beliefs, and the same with Bishop Keith Ackermann for the Anglican community. I know you interviewed Pastor Greg Stone in the past, but the people I mentioned can provide much more context as far as the Jewish mindset is concerned. With all due respect, Dr. Chaffey is hardly a representative voice for the Messianic Jewish/Gentile Community. Another guest recommendation is Dr. Miles Jones, who researches the records of the Hebrew Gospels and their comparisons to the Greek Gospels.

If we can agree that this is NOT about salvation, because it isn't. Salvation is by faith not by works. This is about obedience to God. Both Christians and Torah observant believers are genuinely wanting to do what is right according to Scripture. It also seems apparent that one group is being deceived to believe something that is not the truth. So, if Satan is deceiving someone into believing a lie, would it make sense that he is tricking people to follow of all of God’s instructions (remember this isn't about Salvation)? Or would it make more sense that Satan would not want people to follow God's instructions and tell lies about why they shouldn't do them?

So. If it’s all the commands what about sacrifices? Not those? Well the Bible never splits the law into different groups. It’s the whole law. We aren’t under the letter of the law. It’s the spirit of the law. Principle. Like Roman’s says. Tutor until Christ. I know it gets kinda complicated. But if you take following the law the way they do where do you draw the line? Because you have to. Because all 613 is impossible. Some don’t even make sense. Like we don’t live in houses with flat roofs. Well. Most don’t. So that doesn’t apply. Incest is a law. Yet it’s also illegal outside of the Bible. So how much do you obey just by not breaking social laws? How much don’t make sense because it’s been 3000 years so the way we wash cloths and take care of ourselves is completely different? Oh the sacrificial and ceremonial are done but the 10. The moral stand. Again the word never separates them. But it does say by the spirit not the letter. Good for thought.

@@thomasmarchese2808 I have been following God's Torah for about 3 years now. And it isn't too difficult if you search the scriptures and do the Torah and not the man-made traditions. Deuteronomy 30:11 says what I am commanding you today is not to difficult for you. If you think for some reason God's Torah or Mosaic Iaw is done away with, read Deuteronomy 30. This is prophetic and has not happened yet. It clearly says in verse 8, "You will again obey the LORD and follow all the commands I am giving you today." So whoever you think Israel is, God wants and expects them to keep it again. So it can not be done away with. God commandments and Torah are perfect, riving the soul. There is great reward in keeping them Psalm 19:7-11. If you can see His Torah as God describes it, it will help your understanding. Be blessed!

My mother in law loves to observe the feasts. She sets up a tabernacle in her beautiful backyard garden every year, she bakes challah and lights her Shabbat candles every Friday evening, and we have celebrated Passover with other Christians in her home in the past. The majority of her home library is related to the feats, she just finds it fascinating. She does not believe that Christians are obligated to observe these events, but, rather, that because we are free in Christ, we "get" to observe them. I have observed them with her and tend to agree. Observing the feasts and Shabbat has added so much richness to my life as a Christian, particularly in light of studying the Old Testament with a New Testament perspective. I have to say though, it really made me appreciate these events that much more to hear Michael reiterate from scripture that these are only a shadow of the substance that is found in Christ. That's mindblowing to contemplate! Maranatha, come Lord!

With the Messianic and Hebrew Roots movements, should we have our main focus on the Torah and Jewish traditions? What does the Word say? Why would a person leave the Christian church, with its traditions and false doctrines, just to be caught up in Jewish traditions and false doctrines? What is our goal, the main emphasis? This study might sound harsh, but what are you seeking for? The Way, Truth, and Life! Don’t replace Jesus for the Torah (written word), but rather replace Torah for Jesus (The Living Word)! Which came first, Torah or Jesus? Which one is Living and Reigning? “Abide in the Doctrine of Christ”, or you “Hath Not God” 2Jn 1:9 - 11 The Hebrew Roots (Most), and the Messianic (Most) movements are following through a different “DOOR”! Are we to follow Jews, or our Lord Jesus? Joh 10:7 - 10, Luk 10:7 - 10 We're to seek the righteousness of Jesus, and enter through the "Door" Luke 13:23 - 25 Who is our Rabbi? Mat 23:8 Who are we to "Follow"? Mat 4:19, Mark 8:34 The Shema, “a Jewish prayer”, a tradition of men! The Shema is not a prayer, but rather a Way of Life, JESUS! If you read it, then you will see it’s about our “Daily Walk”, and not an abbreviated prayer. Are we called to walk as a Jew, or to walk as HE walked? The Shema was to teach everyone around us, and to display that in our daily walk from the time we get up to the time we sleep. (Rev 2:1 - 7 )This is addressed to what I believe are the Messianic and Hebrew Roots of today, who put Torah and Jewish traditions before our Messiah, leaving their First Love: So why is it important to follow the Doctrines of Christ? Jesus fulfilled (fully preach) the law, being the “Perfect” example to us of how to truly keep it! He was the mystery of God that was hidden until He came. Who will we learn from, Jesus or the Torah? Without Jesus we are still under the curse of the law! So which is more important? Jesus will teach us the Torah by the way He walked! Rom 16:25 - 26 What are we told about the traditions of men? Check what you’re saying and doing, and see if it is a “commandment of God”, or a tradition of men! Did our God command us to look and act Jewish (occultist hand signs in your prayer of Aaron, scroll parade, allegiance to a wicked nation, and a flag used by the occult since Babylon)? O Jerusalem Jerusalem, how I long to gather you… Realize Israel (Jerusalem/Temple of our God) is only a believer in the Messiah, who keeps His commandments, for there is neither Jew nor Greek, only those who are in Christ Jesus. Who is your teacher, the commandments or your Messiah? I know many will say He is the Word/Torah, and if this be true, “Follow Him”, what He said and taught through the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Your traditions will cause you to reject God (Jesus, the Living Word) Mat 15:3, Mar 7:9, Mar 7:13 Commanded to listen and follow Jesus from the Torah! Deu 18:18 I will raise them up a Prophet (The Messiah) from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put My words in His mouth; and He shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. Deu 18:19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which HE shall speak in My name, I will require (require: properly to tread or frequent) it of him. Do you want the written word or the “manifest Word”? 1Ti 6:3, Col 2:6 - 10, 1Jn 1:1 - 4, Mat 17:1 - 8 Who do we put on, Torah or Jesus? Rom 13:14, 1Co 15:53 - 54, Col 3:9 - 17 True Israel Gal 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. SALVATION is by JESUS CHRIST alone, but the evidence of our Salvation (JESUS) is when we love Him we will keep His commandments, putting on the Lord Jesus Christ, as taught and walked by Him! Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

As a Torah-observant, Charismatic believer in Jesus who is regularly edified by Remnant Radio’s content (and Tim’s content as well), this interview saddened me. To be consistent about smashing echo-chambers (like you usually are), please interview a Torah-observant believer who affirms salvation by grace through faith apart from works, the triune Godhead, spiritual gifts, and the 66 books of Scripture. If interested, I can provide a few recommendations. Please give us a fair interview. I can also give a list of people within this movement to avoid. There are those who can explain the history, spectrum, and core theology of this movement accurately and concisely, as well as provide a scriptural defense for Torah-observance. There are also plenty of us speaking out against heresy within the movement. If you compare it to the Charismatic movement in its diversity, the Torah movement should make a lot more sense. I still love you guys and the content you produce.

Great interview! You guys always conduct such knowledgeable and entertaining interview. I follow the Torah and am very familiar with the Hebrew Roots movement and thought I would share some other possible interview options. Jim Staley is well known in the Hebrew Roots circle, and led an ordinary Christian church before coming under conviction about following Torah and observing the Sabbath as the 7th day of the week. His series called Identity Crisis is one of the best messages I’ve ever heard and completely changed how I read the Bible and specifically, what the “house of Israel” really means. Rico Cortes is also well known in this sphere and is definitely worth checking out. Paul is one of the most misinterpreted authors of the entire Bible. He states multiple times that we are not JUSTIFIED by the law which is true. We are justified in Jesus Christ. The curse of the law is not the law itself as the law is pure and good. The curse of the law is that it is impossible to receive salvation from it. To anyone who believes that the Torah is not to be followed, please read this next verse from Romans 3. “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30 since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.” Both the Jews and the Gentiles did go to the synagogues. The entire book of acts is full of preaching in synagogues. What was the outer court for? The Gentiles. It’s important to remind people when it comes to this movement, that Jesus did in fact follow Torah. They had to bring false witnesses in to convict Him, for they could find no sin (aka breaking of Torah). Even when the Sanhedrin were trying Him and He was remaining silent, He spoke when commanded under oath of the living God (Matt 26:63) because this was necessary under Torah. The summary fo the movement to my understanding is this, Jesus lived a sinless life and did not come to abolish the law, but fulfill it. There’s not much scripture to support that we should follow solely the Ten Commandments (important to note that even if that were the case, Christians would be breaking the fourth every week). Most arguments against following of the Torah, tend to be misinterpreting passages in Paul’s epistles or misinterpreting Acts 15 (which clearly pertains to circumcision, not the entirety of Torah). If Acts 15 is the basis of the argument that Torah is not to be followed, then the only law Gentiles should follow what was said in verse 20, which most Christians don’t follow. That’s a summary of what I’ve learned since following the movement. I do not believe following Torah is necessary to salvation, but I do think Matthew 5:19 answers that question better than I could Edits: I would also strongly disagree with the interpretation he offers of Gal 5:18. Torah is not abolished because of that verse. If you are walking in the Spirit, you are not sinning and the very next verse does support that. I don’t believe that means that the Torah is abolished aside from 9 of the commandments Messianic Judaism is not what he said it is either. Messianic Judaism, though classified as Christianity, does believe that Jesus followed and reaffirmed the Torah and was the Messiah. It is comprised mostly of Jewish people. I’ve been to many Messianic Jew Temples and Wikipedia will reaffirm this as well. If he believes that Jews and Gentiles are still separate and the Bible never says otherwise, what gate will he be entering in the New Jerusalem. The Northern 10 Tribes of Israel have been scattered across the entire world and mixed in with other nations. Are only the children of Judah considered non Gentiles? Most people who keep Torah, do not keep all 600+ laws. There are many laws that were only applicable during that specific periodical context.
@elijah47674 жыл бұрын
This was much longer than I intended. I need to sleep but will be back tomorrow to continue. I just want to respond from a biblical standpoint as to how a Hebrew Roots or Messianic Jew would to the points he’s making, as these are differences in interpretation and clearly I lean much more towards the Hebrew Roots understanding of the scriptures. Will continue tomorrow but need sleep

Not Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Peter, Paul, no one. We are saved by faith. (Here is where you should be asking yourself if this is the case why would the law ever have to be abolished?) And we obey God because he knows what is best for us and gave us instructions on how to live. Christians believe this and so do Torah observant believers. The difference is what instructions do we think are applicable. Videos like this seem to not get this so they aren't able to really get into a proper debate on the real differences. Yes. The book explains that. The Jews continued to practice their heritage. That’s why Paul confronts Peter when he’s eating with gentiles then when the circumcision party comes he starts walking a different walk because he doesn’t want to look bad. Because there’s nothing against Jews associating with gentiles. Which is exactly why God sent Peter to the centurions house earlier in the book. Although you clarify in the early bits that the group is not monolithic, I wanted to point out (for the sake of those still stuck in HRM) that not all believe they become Jews or MUST keep the law. I would agree that the early definition of their interpretation of Acts 15 is perhaps what makes the justification for labeling them HRM.

I chose to celebrate the Passover because of Jesus, not the law. Jesus was the ultimate Passover lamb and when He said when we break the bread and take the cup to remember Him, He is talking about the Sedar meal on Passover. FYI- Jewish days were just numbered 1-6 and then the Shabbat (Sabbath).

Please bring on someone like Douglas Hamp, Tim Hegg, or David Wilber (all are Trinitarian and affirm salvation by grace through faith apart from works) to discuss Torah observance. Centuries ago, Calvinists and non-Calvinists would not have even sat at the same table like you guys do in this podcast. Please give us a seat at the table and let us make our case, just like you do for nearly every other Christian group.

Paul covered this in his letter to the Colossians: Colossians 2.16-23 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ...Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence." Christ is the fulfillment of the law for all who believe, who have been grafted into the root of Abraham and have been adopted into the family of God by faith. If you like Jewish culture, have at it, but it has zero bearing on our salvation, and is no more necessary than any other man made regulation.

@@daddybroome708 neither of those verses say what you claim they do. Colossians says that Jesus, "is the first born over all creation", not the first creation. That term "first born" or "first begotten" means only or unique. Jesus was not created, he is as the Father - eternal, everlasting. Jeremiah is referring to Babylon and Nebuchadnezzer, who were both symbolized by a lion in Daniels vision of the four beasts. "Destroyer of the Gentiles" is a reference to him as a conqueror of nations, not that Jesus is coming to destroy the gentiles - that's contrary to his gospel being preached to all the nations to reconcile the gentiles to himself. Your partiality based on skin color and a victim mentality has warped the gospel into something that it's not. If God is going to condemn white people for slavery, then he'll also condemn Africans for selling them to the white people, and for practicing slavery today; and he'll judge them even harsher because unlike whites, they are enslaving their own people, they own neighbors. I've read some of your other replies in the comments, and see that you are a product of a gospel of condemnation, warped by your own brokenness. I hope that God will bless you to see the truth and come out of the false Hebrew Israelite theology that has you bound in chains of darkness and ignorance.

Remnant Radio, I appreciate your podcast and heart in trying to bring clarity to various issues within the body of Messiah. In lieu of having a guest that purports to know about the Hebrew Roots Movement, it would be better to have someone who has actually been a part of it for a substantial amount of time. I would suggest reaching out to Bill Cloud, who has been a teacher and pastor in the movement for 25+ years. Just as there are a multitude of perspectives amongst and within Reformed, Baptist, Charismatic, Orthodox, etc., there are a variety of perspectives amongst and within people who believe that YHVH's instructions (i.e. the Torah) are simply instructions for right living. Do as Yeshua did in both spiritual and practical ways, not just "praying the sinners prayer" (not in the scripture) and claiming that you are saved. Paul said to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. The modern church is good at systems, organizations, programs, making converts and building funds, but not so good at making disciples.

People are incurably religious by nature and so adopt traditions that make them 'feel' holy. You see it in all the major religious movements and in their worship styles whether public or private. Popes, vicars, reverends, rabbis, even doctors of theology, all seem to 'wannabe' seen like the scribes and pharisees did - and their followers love to have it so. Just put on a shawl, light some candles and chant 'Jesus' over and over again in song with hands raised and the mood is set. We might as well go back to Judaism - but wait - Judaism is no more so new inventions are needed. It will never end because we don't really want to be set free from our traditions - or our flesh.

Hey, I totally hear what you are saying. People love to get into religion and I think Satan loves it too. It distracts us from doing what God commands. I have been a Christian believer for 47 years and just recently started seeing things a little differently. I still believe that we are only saved through faith in Jesus. But that maybe instead of following God's ways we have slipped and started following the ways of the world. God has appointed times Sabbaths and Festivals. But as Christians we have been told they are old and sort of backwards. Even that God hates them when we read Isaiah 1. But I think as Christians we have been deceived. Would it make sense that God would hate a Sabbath He created? Or is it that God hates OUR appointed feasts and OUR assemblies and not HIS. What God and Jesus are not wanting are our man made ways, laws, celebrations that we make up. As Christians we have been told that God's Laws are somehow bad and that need to be abolished. Why would God ever make a commandment to anyone that was not for the persons good? And no one was ever saved by the Law. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Peter, Paul, no one was saved by the law. Only by faith in Jesus. So if we can understand these two points then we can start asking the question why would the God's law need to change or be done away with?

Romans 3:28-31 “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the Torah. Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. Do we then make void the Torah through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the Torah.” We can not be justified by the Torah, so therefore we are not under the Torah. We can only be justified by faith in Jesus. Does that mean we throw out the Torah and no longer adhere to it? No. Sin is transgression of the Torah. To be Under the Law is to be subject to the consequences of transgressing the Law, which would be death apart from Christ. To be under the law, does not mean to be following Torah. Paul followed Torah. Why did the Pharisees say that they found no wrong in him? (Acts 23:9). The Pharisees would have been grading him off the Torah. Should we assume that Paul is guilty of transgressing the Torah without evidence of it? It’s easy to get bogged down in church doctrine, but I don’t believe there’s much of a biblical precedent that states that the Torah is null and void. What book did Jesus quote the most in His ministry? Deuteronomy. He came to expand on and explain the Torah, never saying it’s done away with.

No one is saying it’s to be tossed out. Spirit. Not letter. Sacrifices? Oh those are out. Ceremony? Oh that’s out too. Only moral. But wait. The word never splits them up. It’s all the law. Paul says if you’re a gentile and get circumcised you keep all of it. He says if you’re a Jew stay a Jew. Gentile stay gentile. Neither Jew nor gentile gets quoted under literally every video as if the very next words aren’t neither male nor female. Point clearly being about discrimination not distinction. So what applies to Jewish people to set them apart and what is more applicable to everyone. Also what about time? Just like state laws about where you can leave your horse. Completely inapplicable today. But in spirit can be applied by hey. Make don’t leave something somewhere that doesn’t make sense or is dangerous to leave it. The principal or spirit can be applied. Hence the whole word is good for teaching and correction. Like Paul also said. The law was a tutor until Christ. Like children until the time set forth by a father. We’re to act as spiritually mature who can apply concepts and not live by the letter. Make sense?

Thanks Remnant Radio. This is appalling, and it's sad to hear growth is occurring among homeschoolers. "Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised.... ...Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.". HR =Judiazer=Circumcision Group. It's not possible to observe Torah, even a single portion. It's not possible for a gentile to be instructed in Torah, without turning to the Rabbis, who are the teachers of the Law. It is not possible to pursue Torah, without Midrash and Talmud, because where there is Law, there must be a Lawgiver and Judge.

Hey Nathan, I was a Christian believer for 47 years and just recently began to see things a little differently. I still very much believe that we are only saved through faith in Jesus Christ. Nothing we can do to add to it. I can see now that this is what Acts 15 is also teaching. Acts 15:1 people were saying you had to get circumcised to be SAVED. This is what the dispute is about. Trying to do works to be saved. The circumcision party was preaching you must be circumcised to be saved. Paul and Barnabas were in sharp dispute about this false teaching. Christians believers and Torah observant believers both believe that we are saved by faith in Jesus. The difference is that Christians believe that some of God’s Law was only for the Jews and that Jesus made a new way. Torah observant believers think that all of God’s instruction is still applicable and still for our good now. That is what a healthy debate should be about. I would like to discuss this with you more if you like?

So he is definitely lieng here: 17:52 (17:55 exactly: "favor") - because bible says something different here: John 14:21 "He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself unto him." And what Jesus teached is exactly to keep ten comandments or even more, to be saved.

Abraham wasn't a Jew. Isaac wasn't a Jew. Jacob (who's name was changed to Israel) wasn't a Jew. Jews came from one of Jacob's son's Judah. Judah is just one of the 12 tribes of Israel. They are not all Jews. The nation of Israel was divided into the house of Judah two tribes (Jews) and House of Israel 10 tribes (not Jews). As a gentile believer I don't become a Jew. This pod cast is hard to listen to because of the misinterpretation of scripture which boarders on heresy, but I'm going to leave it at a misunderstanding of the context and reality of scripture.

No, the real scripture in Rev. 22:14, in the real text is "blessed are those who WASH THEIR ROBES that they may have the right to the tree of life", NOT 'those who have kept the commandments'. The 'commandment' addition is found in the Amplified Bible, and added to the robes, but in your 'special' version the 'robes' are totally replaced by "commandment"... Do your group, like the Jehovah’s witnesses have written an altered Bible text to suit your doctrines? Be careful lest you be deceived, by twisted doctrines or texts.
