I did improv classes in college and so it was always obvious to me that Whose Line Is It Anyway was always totally made up on the spot. Improv classes mostly just teach you about remembering the elements of a good story: you need to have distinct characters, you need to establish a location, you the characters need to interact until they find some sort of obstacle to overcome, then they have to work to resolve it. Once you start instinctively incorporating those things into your stories, improvised storytelling becomes quite natural and not nearly as hard as it looks on tv.

I'm an improviser, most people can do improv with a bit of practice, you might read this and think 'oh I can't do it' yeah you can! we all make up stories, or tell jokes with our friends, improv is just putting some sort of framing device around it, bit more to it to get really good at it like the whose line cast, but you can all do it. my default answer when someone asks if it was really made up, is ' yeah, it's like playing jazz, we know how to play the notes, but we don't know what the chords are yet'
@97channelАй бұрын
It's heart warming to know that Whose Line was legit. I would be so gutted if it turned out that they cheated and used scripted material, because those guys and gals have been heroes to young aspiring performers learning the craft and training in improv skills along. the way. One thing I would say though, is that the producers definitely provided opportunities for specific performers to use material which would be naturally n their repertoire. For example, in things like the 'Let's Make A Date' game, where three of the performers would be given a character or personality to portray, time and time again Steve Frost would get something like a German U-boat commander which would facilitate him using his "Das boot" joke which surely cropped up in at least half of all his appearances on the show. And Rory Bremner would be given the suggestion to portray someone like John Major, which is awfully convenient for a professional impressionist. Out would come the pre-prepared glasses from his pocket. Also, Ryan Styles would be exclusively given the sound effects game to showcase his vocal skills. I'm not saying that I believe it was scripted, but there was absolutely some 'steering' to cater for each performer.
