Bloody hell Gary and Alan really sounding dinosaurs here imo. You can’t possibly think Carsley is the better appointment just because he’s English. With Tuchel in the dug out, for the first time in my life, I have genuine belief in the national team.

I don't think anybody is saying that an English manager would necessarily be "better" than a foreign one. They are talking more about the spirit of international football. Being the best one country has to offer vs the best that another has to offer.

I think this might just be the most sensible appointment I've ever seen the FA make in my 40+ years of watching England. Who's going to care what nationality he is when he's holding silverware? It also maybe shows that they're brave enough to admit that the whole St George's park set-up hasn't had enough time to work yet. Instead of blindly pushing forward with the whole "Only English Pathway"
@billybobthornton9668
@billybobthornton9668 Күн бұрын
@jonminson5770 Agreed. Job comes too soon for Carsley and the timing's wrong to get Howe because it would cost a bomb to get him out of Newcastle and he's still not as experienced/successful as Tuchel. Hopefully having an elite manager will also level up the St George's Park setup in terms of the tactical thinking and experience he can share with the rest of the coaching staff. It could be the case that this helps accelerate that development rather than hamper it.......although given Tuchel's history there's also a good chance it all ends in a meltdown 😝

He’s not been hired to rescue and rebuild the national team, that work has already been done. He’s been hired to navigate 8 games and win the World Cup. A German coach, Sepp Piontek, changed Danish football from being only amateur level to professional back in 1979 until 1990. His changes and vision was definitely behind us winning the Euros in 92. And even if we Danes never really liked the Germans (too many lost wars 😂), we ended up loving Sepp, who still lives in Denmark this day. Tuchel’s hardest challenge coming in will be making all these great individuals working together as a united team. And maybe it will be good to have a manager without an obvious connection to his hometown club like any English manager would have.

So Lampard had Chelsea 10th in the League in January. Tuchel came in and won the Champions League 4 months later with the same squad. Gerard had Villa close to the relegation places. Emery came in and got the same squad into Europe. The big story today is the closed 1960s view of the English media. That means you blokes and Carragher and Neville. I remember Vialli in his book said he noticed something about English football that not many people mention. He said in English football there wasn’t the class diversity that was in Italy or in other European countries. In Italy there were players from upper classes, middle classes and working class because football was very lucrative in Italy. In England wages were kept very low until the Premier League due to the maximum wage and the TV money being shared between all 4 divisions until 1992. This made football unattractive to working class people with a good formal question, middle class people and upper class people as they had the education to find more lucrative careers in other fields. So for 100 years only the least educated English people were in football. This created an anti-academic anti-intellectual culture in English football, where you call another player gay for reading a broadsheet newspaper and you have generation of generation of players who become coaches with out academic or formal good education to be a manager in the most sophisticated data analysis coaching today. Guardiola was working with a nuclear physicist from Harvard to better coach the movement of players. How is a former English pro-with 2 GCSEs going to compete with that? It is changing because as the wages caught up with the top clubs in Europe, you are now seeing more middle class players in the English game like Bamford, Ward-Prowse, Tyrone Mings and Eric Dier and more highly educated working class players like Saka, Lookman, Hudson-odoi and Danny Welbeck, but it takes more than few generations to change 100 year culture of anti-intellectualism in English football.

@@HB2K-h8m Interesting to note that there's still a noticeable class divide between football and rugby, both in schools and in some towns and cities. I wonder if that's the case in other countries where football is the most popular sport?
@Delboy0
@Delboy0 22 сағат бұрын
@@scoggers1628 Well in England at the start of of 20th you had sport divided into class. The amateur sports like Rugby Union, Cricket and athletics were predominantly upper and middle class and the paid professional sports of football, rugby league, boxing were working class. Other countries didn’t have that divide, especially in football in Europe , where they had no maximum wage like England, keeping footballer salaries very low. That meant salaries footballers in Europe were higher and attractive to highly educated working class, middle class and upper class and you have more education people in football in Europe, you create a more intellectual and academic approach to football and tactics and that history has created an environment where better coaches can be produced. If wages were not much higher for footballers than the average man, there was no incentive for educated working class, middle classes and upper classes to play football and use their education in another field. This creates a dumbed down football culture were an academic and intellectual approach to football was distrusted and even mocked and this has produced English coaches without the academic skills to coach in this modern era of football to a high level.

The obsession with the England manager being English really pisses me off. Yes it’s nice to be patriotic but that on its own won’t win tournaments for England. Cracking manager with a proven track record of silverware at most clubs he’s been at. Fantastic appointment by the FA. Plays a decent style of attacking football too. As long as he wins games and delivers in a major tournament, what England fan is going to complain? 100% behind him. Probably the smartest appointment of the national manager I’ve seen in my lifetime. If we’re going to take that final step to become tournament winners we need a man who’s been there and done it at the highest level. Tuchel is that man. Aside from Pep, who was completely unrealistic anyway it’s the best possible outcome. Carsley would never have cut the mustard. The first problem Tuchel will have with the media is his 3-4-3 system with the width coming from the wingbacks which were Chillwell and James at Chelsea. It means wingers like Saka, Grealish, Gordon, Noni etc will miss out unless he plays them as wing backs. Also another attacker will miss out because of the extra defender at the back. It will probably be Kane up front with Foden and Palmer behind as the front 3. Saka or Gordon might move to left wingback since we don’t have a good fit one regularly.

Teams like Germany and Spain, as well as Argentina etc., are still there so there is no guarantee whatsoever that Tuchel will win anything. 7:35 - 9:40 thats the sound of the hammer hitting the nail on the head. Totally agree with Gary - being stuck in the old English way of playing/coaching has cost you dearly in terms of coaching development. Even look at club - all your successful managers at club level are foreigners. Failure to adapt your playing style to something more modern whilst other countries mainly go with domestic names and have developed unique yet modern styles. Its finally caught up with England.
@XboneMalone

It's clear the FA want a proven record of winning trophies, in the hope that the coach can translate that. No English coach has that. The last English manager to win a 'big' competition was Harry 'I set up bank accounts for my pets' Redknapp. The FA had tried approaching from within and while the environment has transformed, crossing the all important, coveted line has eluded the team. Who out there has shown flexibility in terms of tactics to the same level that Tuchel has? I don't particularly care what nationality the coach is. I care about seeing the team playing positive attacking football that is cohesive throughout the pitch. That's the big challenge, given the lack of time a national coach has these days with his group of players. What I don't want to see, ever again, is the team playing like they did in the last tournament.

Brazil in 82 (and 90), got done by pragmatism in the shape of Italy (and Argentina). Colombia in 94... to give just two examples. Southgate may have been overly defensive and pretty much everyone had worked out how to deal with England by the end of his tenure, but he understood the need to be difficult to beat. I don't know where I'm going with this, but I suppose if I'm going anywhere, it's towards the hope that Tuchel knows how to combine pragmatism with flair.

You cannot argue against Tuchel's appointment and then bring up Gerrard and Lampard as serious contenders. Neither of them have won a thing as managers in English football. Gerrard took Villa to 17th and was digging everyone around the club out, other than himself. A world class coach comes in and takes the club to 4th in 18 months. Tuchel is a world class coach and a knockout specialist. It should be a no brainer appointment as the best person available for the role.
