Great to see a good bit of DIY happening, spraying is definitely the way forward. The only thing I’d say as a professional sprayer is that you should make sure you’re using the right mask. That JPS mask looked like it was only a P3 or P3R. This won’t actually filter out airborne paint particles, they will still get into your lungs. You need a mask with ABEK1 or AB1 as a minimum. Otherwise you are risking your health. Just a pointer! Happy spraying 👍🏽

So ... if you have touch ups from hanging pictures/shelves/bumps how will you respray without masking half a furbished room? As I am making a living from painting and decorating I don't see rollers and brushes go anytime soon.
@streaky81
@streaky81 2 жыл бұрын
P3R will be more than good enough for filtering out (water-based - which we should all be striving to use where possible for a long long list of reasons) paint particles, these things stop viruses that are massively smaller than the smallest paint particles you're going to see. An ABEK1 filter is for _vapours_ which are a whole different kettle of fish, if you're working with the sorts of vapours where you need that you're going to have the same issue with a roller - though I agree if you are you absolutely should.

ABEK1 3M cartridge for gas/vapours? But it should also be used with P3 prefilter.

I use the bigger version of this for doing empty full house jobs, it has proved to be an invaluable tool! One issue I found kept happening was when I used the clear decorators film it “held “ moisture from the spray as it’s obviously waterproof. It caused the paint to run down & off causing a lot of clean up. Also it had a tendency to act like a sail as the air hit it. I switched to the brown masking paper car sprayers use. Because it’s slightly heavier it stops the sail effect, it also soaks and holds any overspray. Hope it helps! Cheers for the vid.

I've bought the same type of Wagner unit as shown here and I concur with all the comments. I think it is the way forward with home renovation (at least) and the only "downside" I experienced was the additional mask out required (particularly ceilings). To give you an idea, my lviing room ceiling is approx. 50sqm with massive plaster cornices (150mm) all the way around. When painting using brush roller, just the cornices were an all day job. With this machine, I painted the lot in less than 15 mins. It really can be that quick. The machine itself works perfectly and produces excellent results prodviding you take some care with your paint types. The finish is way better than roller based painting, at least in my view (i've done a lot of that in my past) and if the surface is not 100% virgin, coverage is great. If virgin, you just need a bit more overlap in your paint strokes is all. Well done on the vid.

Im part way through a full house reno. First few rooms i rolled then i got fed up so bought this sprayer about 6 weeks ago. The finish is so good. I've only used it for white mist coats and white matt so far. Can't say I've got the hang of a 10 minute clean down yet though, it seems to take me ages. But high victorian ceilings are a breeze, and i'm totally converted. I've even bought a smaller sprayer for coloured walls.

When you spray ceiling and walls in different colours, then spray walls first. You would do ceiling first when rolling, but it is much easier to mask the walls than masking a ceiling.

I do the opposite, but I use spray shields. Sometimes I need to do some touch up by hand, but I still find it faster than masking everything. I do ceiling, trim/doors then walls. I don't expect my apprentices to be able spray using just a shield without some extensive training, but once you know how, you can turn over a house in no time.

Ive had two of these 250 and the 350 they are really good, I did a large semi all the way through in a day, however this was on an empty house! On fresh plaster sometimes the spray doesn't adhere too Well and In part I've had to sand down the wall after so when I re spray over it sticks... or just roller 1st then spray. Onky best for emulsion too ! Overall I'd say they are better than a roller, the finish is far better!!

Spraying first of two layers, then last third one applied with sprayer, but finishing touch with a roller (with no additional paint) - works like a charm every single time. Also you can add the roll texture in the second layer and just spray the third one on top of that, if you want a faded roller texture.

I have barely ever painted in my life, but I now flip properties self employed for a living, and decorating is something you can save tons of money on doing it yourself. I got a 350m, never sprayed before in my life. Have done my entire house to such a high standard. Thanks to KZbin and videos from folks like yourself, it was so easy to setup and get the hang of so quickly. I did 9 rooms in 1 day including the ceilings, far simpler cleanup and overall one of the best investments ive made recently.

24:00 touch ups. Trust me, anyone can get a spray finish touch up with roller or even brush. I've been working with Wagner, Graco units worth thousands etc the past 8 years, industrial sprayer day in day out. Thin down your product with suitable thinner/water/glycol etc and get flock foam rollers and take in larger sections. No need to respray unless your surface area is more than a couple metre square. Great job by the way, truly a master of all trades, you're universal logic and can-do attitude serves you well. your wagner airless is a fine investment, get back your time. Had some painters scoff at me, claiming touch ups can't be done, blacks and strong colours are impossible to work with. Have hundreds of customers to say otherwise, not even other professionals can see where I've done remedial work to others damage.

@@zarasbubble1748 as in a low volume gravity gun or airbrush? You'd think so, but it would involve masking off potential areas of overspray. I normally take in a larger section to a corner or spray down or up way out of a person's eyeline or critical light. Brush or foam roller works that way too. It's extremely hard to feather a wet edge with some of these water borne paints and guns. It either is a visible patch in sheen, or goes on too dry at the edge. Hope it works out for you if you need to give it a bash

What a revelation! A mate has one of these (yellow) units and has offered it to me. I'm a decorator. It looks like I need to have a go. One tip when doing cabinets or trim with a roller - always lay the paint off with a brush. You can get a 'Laying Off Brush' specifically for it. yes, you need to be quick with water based paints, but the finish can be exquisite. Floetrol keeps the paint 'open' for a bit longer, and for big panels, wipe them down with a wet cloth immediately before painting to give you half a minute longer to get the paint on. The best paint I've encountered so far is F&B Modern Eggshell or Tikurilla, but the paint tech is evolving all the time so I fully expect to see Dulux, Leyland and so on bringing new stuff. Oh, Zinsser do some magic paint - and even B&Q's Valspar emulsion is exquisite. Great vid. New sub.

Watch the Wall panel video and the trouble you had with the paint finish.Try using Bedec aqua gloss/satin or Benjamin Moore paints. you will find the difference amazing, especially BM paints. We bought a project house a few years back and I invested in an earlex HVLP sprayer. I had great success with it on the walls and woodwork but as shown in this video it’s all in the preparation! And once a wall has been sprayed you cannot touch-up a scuff with a 4” roller! The finish you get is exceptional for DIY. If you do have a go it’s also worth using the right masking tape like Q1 tapes or Tesa.

A very comprehensive review and I agree with much of the findings. We have the same Wagner and there's no doubt it covers the area very quickly. My only real complaint is the amount of mist which finds its way to the floor. In our case the carpet was being replaced so it didn't matter but I wasn't expecting quite so much dusting of the carpet. Personally I think you should have gone up/down and then left/right to ensure coverage. It also took us a while to figure out the by reversing the spray tip (green part) 180 degrees it allowed you to clear any blockages in the head. Overall I found the masking a bit of a drag and it's easy to miss bits. Apart from that a great video but I will only be using the sprayer for large projects.

When spraying paint with any type of sprayer, you do need to cover everything you don't want painted. That includes the floor. But realistically if you have a floor you don't want paint on, you need to cover the floor even if you use rollers or brushes because they too can easily spatter paint. No shortcuts for masking in other words.

The same brand as the big sprayer, Wagner, has hand held models for literally 50 bucks and they work just fine. I think the W100 ultra cheapo I got can do 5 square meters in 10 minutes so the flow isn't massive, but it's not going to be on any handheld. I did find a 1.4 liter accessory container for it that fits, so that will cut down on the refills a little. It's possible this other brand of handheld is better, but 10 times better, I have my doubts. It's nice to be able to get into a perfectly fine sprayer for almost no money, just to see how you get on. They do have intermediary sets between the very cheapest and these huge units also.

Although you masked off everything, and it didn't really show in the video, but how much paint dust is generated? Could you use this on a carpeted room with furniture if you covered the items with sheets? Would the dust travel to other rooms if the doors are shut but not sealed?. Also, did you try using an cardboard sheet to mask the walls/ceiling, where you just move the cardboard with other hand, instead of tape? Finally. Did you have to thin the paint at all? Does it just work straight out of the pot?

I painted our 3 bedrooms last week, one room we did "egyptian cotton" in silk and one wall a similar blue to yours. Did the cotton and left for a week, went to mask up with low tack frog tape for the blue, pulled the tape off straight afterwards and it peeled all the cotton colour off! Cleaned the walls down with sugar soap before so don't know why it didn't adhere properly. I could never mask off like you did as it doesn't seem to work with dulux silk! 😔

If you want to get rid from that fuzzy corner edge at 14:03, next time paint the paper tape with the color you are cutting from. Do you have experience using a spray for gloss work? You mention they're good for trim but it's not clear if you're just painting with a standard emulsion or not.

I'm about to paint a pretty massive space in my basement. BLACK ceiling (rafters), light gray walls, along with dark gray walls, and a powder room that will be a terra cotta color. Are there any pitfalls in using a large sprayer with these darker paints? Obviously the ceiling will come first...should I then work my way down in the paint colors from black to dark gray to light gray to terra cotta? I'll be using a brand new Wagner Control Pro 130. For the record, I am considering just painting the powder room with a roller since it's only a 6x6 space (feet, not meters)...so the possibility exists that I won't use the sprayer for that small space. Thanks...your video was really helpful.

The main problem with spraying is that if you don't back roll it, any marks that need touching up at a later date show up like hell it really flashes, new builds and ceilings is all I would use an airless on

Every tool is great for a specific job. E.g a impact driver is great for framing and rough jobs, a hand screwdriver is good for door handles and your more likely to slip and scratch the handle with a impact driver. With decorating, a sprayer is brilliant if you have lots of rooms to do. If you only got one room, it’s probably easier and quicker prep wise to use a roller.

Hi bud great to watch an expert! I bought similar product to start on a renovation project. However the instructions were hard to understand and I tried to use without flushing it through first. I cannot get it to spray now and think I may have flooded it. I e since try to flush the paint through the machine without success. Any ideas how I may do this as it was a costly piece of machinery not to work? Also are you supposed to add a little water to the paint?

I've just started a new job today with a newly purchased wagner 350m sprayer. Never used one before. But the results are absolutely amazing. The coverage. The finish and the speed is unbelievable. There is no way on earth can you paint using roller and brush as fast as you can with a sprayer and the level of finish you get with the sprayer. I had painted x4 bedrooms 2 bathrooms and landing and stairs in 2hrs which is unreal. Great video mate

Hi I bought me the big wagener for a project. I wasn't so happy. There was a nice smooth finish at some areas but some areas wasn't so great. I don't know why maybe lack or less experiences. However I wasn't happy with the result/effort/investing time etc if I would just it for my business from my experience I'm quicker with roller

Amazing review. I had a Wagner airless years ago and did a whole house in a weekend when we moved in. However it really needs to be done when you have no carpets and clear rooms. We are moving again and need to go through the whole process again. I am thinking of spraying again. Do you find the finish better with the bigger Wagner? I like the ease of the portable Greco. Or do I need both ideally for a large house? 4 bed 1200 sq feet Ideally from a cost point of view I’d just get the bigger unit, acknowledging the paint waste

Hello. I’ve started painting newly plastered walls. The skirting, coving and doors are installed but not painted yet. Couple of questions: - for the walls already painted with roller, would you recommend sanding them before applying additional coats with sprayer - not sure why it’s better to paint the trim first and walls,ceilings second? Thx!

Being a car painter that has used a airless sprayer to paint a couple house, how come you spray the wall with the sprayer using up and down strokes rather then left and right strokes. I have been spraying left to right as that's what I'm use to with cars. Do you think it makes much difference?
@colliedogjoy

I can only guess that you don't want to be walking with the spray going. Vertical strokes can be done standing still.

Q1 make pre-taped masking paper. The size you need is easy enough to hand hold as the paper comes folded on the role, then you just unfold it to full width once applied.

Hey. We are looking to paint the woodwork dark green and the walls a light grey. How would you go about this? Do skirting first and overspray into walls? Then mask skirting once dry and go over the overspray? Would it cover? Or is there a way to do walls first and then woodwork as to me it would make more sense to go lighter then darker? But how would I mask up the walls without it damaging the walls after? Even with the masking tape for new paint I find it risky? Any tips? Also how many coats of spray would you say a wall and woodwork takes? And does it take longer in between coats? Sorry so many questions.

Hi mate, don't know much about Wagners, but just get a 308 FFLP tip and it doesn't matter which machine I guess. The FFLP Tips are Graco I think. Maybe wagner do the same. Nor sure. The machine I got was 900 quid with all the hoses etc. Can't imagine Wagner will be cheaper.

tikkurila anti reflex 2 for ceilings every time. its specifically designed for the job. dulux works well but doesnt always cover if you had to do a lot of filling. on balance if you want a cheaper more effective product, wickes ultra matt will cover exceptionally well and is cheap. if its a rental then ultra matt if its private then AR2!

Best paint sprayer for newbies is a Graco gx21hf. This will do woodwork(trim) or walls. It has a hopper but will also suck from a bucket. They now do a battery gx21hf.

Graco I'd say are far superior. I'll give you a massive tip for spraying wood work. Use a 308 tip for everything and spray Akzo Nobel Aqualit (Supercryl) Spray Applied Waterborne Enamel Topcoat from Holmans specialist paints. I believe they do an undercoat too. Don't water it down it's ready to spray. This 308 tip with this will give you so much control compared to a 310 or 210. I've always had runs trying to spray satin wood with a 210 or 310- nightmare. Also this paint for all your trim, doors, skirting and arcs is a game changer. Superb finish.

@@benwilkinson5457 Great info mate thanks, I'll look for those paint when the time comes. Would you not rate the Wagner for woodwork? Appreciate that Graco probably a better machine but that is reflected in the cost and at this moment I can't really justify the extra cost.

Very helpful information and comments as well. Thanks for sharing! May I ask you a question please? Do you mask the walls when you spray the door jams? I understand that you are spraying them with some acrylic paint which is different from the emulsion /latex paint you are using for the interior walls and ceiling. Does it matter for the later application of the emulsion paint if that acrylic paint goes onto the wall as well around the door frames?

Good video, but I am not sure I agree with you last tip to roll the spray painted walls and ceilings, just for the concern of coming back in the future, by doing that you are actually now risking the roller marks again, what's the point.

Thanks for another concise very useful video. This looks very promising. We are considering the larger 350 model that you put the paint bucket underneath, the main reason being we'd like to spray smooth masonry paint and wondered if you think these sprayers can do it without needing to dilute the paint? The wagner videos dont seem mention much about diluting it. I think the 350 model is about £550, which isnt bad considering the time saving and less chance of it causing havoc with the carpel tunnel in my wrists/hands. Appreciate your thoughts/recommendations. Thanks again 😊 best wishes to you all

I think you can use the 350 but seems like they recommend the PP90 which is a little more expensive, but I've got a lot to do, so still makes sense. You can spray an entire house, however the model isn't great for that amount of work 5 days a week. Should really get my hands operated, I'm just worried about it going wrong and preventing me from working. Keep up the great work!

I am looking to buy a paint strayer for indoor and outdoor use......Wagner seems best brand buy am not sure whether I need airless or not? I am looking to do walls, doors and fence panels. Also noticed you dont add 10% water which I have seen other people recommend.....what's your view on this? And finally ....am assuming these are good for primer, undercoat and other emulsions or eggshell finishes.
