As you may be able to tell, I made most of this up as I went. Hence why it took 3 days! However we got there in the end. 👍

I’m still in awe of the fact you are doing this yourself and doing such an incredible job. Said it before... there’s a few professional roofers who could learn a bit 👍✅

When installing lead valleys you only nail first one third of the lead allowing for the high expansion co-efficient lead has. Secondly you never bead the edges of the lead, due to them flattening over time and any snow or detritus accumulation will cause capillary attraction and draw water in. You all way either install tilting fillet and dress the lead over the tilting fillet or in your case dress the lead over the wooden tile batons. Lastly you never nail through the lead anywhere that is subject to water, the reason being that constant expansion and contraction will open up the nail hole opening and allow water ingress, you only nail at the rear of the tilting fillet or on top of the buttons. That’s the advice from the lead development association.

I’ve been a roofer for 20 years and u have done a very tidy job seen tradesmen do a lot worse only thing I would have done differently is dress the lead valley up onto the battons to give it a good upstand other than that top notch 👌🏻

Hi mate, just a note the lead valleys needed to be put on builders paper or directly onto the valley boards. When you put the lead valleys on top of any roofing felt including roof shield the lead is prone to sweat.
@rsg666

My thoughts exactly, also, the lead should be dressed up onto the top of the baton for extreme weather conditions. That's way we've been doing it for 32 years. He should also have angled every slate tale on the hips before the lead is fitted.

I was just about to advise you not to nail down the side only at top and covered with next bit of lead, but you already learnt your lesson lol. Also code 4 lead max lengths is 1.2 meters and code 5 is 1.5meters.

1.46-1.51 You've nailed the lead just past the welt this will leak, you should have used a lead clip tucked in the welt and dragged over and nailed into a batten.
@gaza19661310
@gaza19661310 3 жыл бұрын
Instead of put having a welt on either side of the lead valley have a lath either side with the lead dressed so the lead has an upstand, less likely to leak.

Why not a close mitred hip? Definitely too many fixings in the lead. I would have utilised a few slate and a half. The lead specialist wont thank you for the small cuts.

@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 3 жыл бұрын
Yes?
@craigkearney8883
@craigkearney8883 3 жыл бұрын
There shouldn't be any breatheable underlay under the lead at all, moisture will become trapped between the underside of the lead and the membrane causing underside corrosion. Lead only sits on either wood or building paper
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 3 жыл бұрын
Craig Kearney ive gone with most manufacturers and roofer’s advice with that as I was unsure which order is was layered. The membrane that is there is not the same as the main roof, ie no water is running down it, it’s just simply a strip to create a slip layer to isolate the lead from roof to allow for movement.
@craigkearney8883
@craigkearney8883 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheRestorationCouple yes but it's breathable felt that allows vapor and moisture to pass through it which in turn will trap the moisture. If you were to see the underside of lead valley that's been lined with breatheable membrane you'd realise that it's shouldn't be used and causes corrosion.
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I’m with you now, it’s the fact it’s breathable that’s the issue. 😬Just chatting to the lead worker doing the hips today who agreed with what you’re saying. Well hopefully the well vented void below will reduce the risk but will know for next time. 👍
