Күн бұрын

In the latest installment of RSG Senior Contributor Sergio Avedian's "Driver Diary" series, he delves into the consequences of declining acceptance rates among rideshare drivers.
Throughout this episode, Sergio examines whether the algorithm is accurately pricing trips, particularly in light of the past four years of inflation, which has caused driver costs to skyrocket.
Sergio raises thought-provoking questions: Is it time to reintroduce the rate card and abandon upfront fares? Would this change require drivers to forfeit the ability to see their destinations beforehand? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Upfront Fares IS pricing trips correctly from Uber's perspective. They don't care about whether it is a fair offer, they care if the price maximizes their profit. Just this morning I accepted a $1/mile trip where the destination was in a low traffic area. The very next trip was an extreme lowball ($12 for 18 total miles) back to civilization. That's what Uber does. The put drivers over a barrel, then hit them with lowball offers, knowing that the driver is likely to accept vs getting nothing.

I recently got an uber request paying $33 for 35+ miles taking 1hr and 25 minutes. Including 3 stops. The driver was charged $78. In what world is this fair? The algorithm is pricing correctly for uber and it is offering the least amount possible because there are drivers willing to take these rides. We need to keep declining until we get what is fair.

As of June 1, 2024, Dara Khosrowshahi, the CEO & Director of Uber Technologies Inc, received a total compensation of $2,745,305. This includes a base salary of $1,000,000 and other components1. Additionally, he was awarded options to purchase stock valued at approximately $136 million after successfully achieving a performance target aimed at securing a $120 billion valuation for the ride-hailing company2. @ZuberLA

It’s not out of control, it’s exactly how they want it to work. Charge as much as possible and find drivers that will accept the lowest rate. The algorithm tries to figure out what the lowest price point a driver will accept. Desperate drivers accepting super low rates means the algorithm will keep spitting out low rates.

The prices I'm offered continue to fall. And the longer the ride, the bigger the rip-off. I'm currently being offered way less than $1/mile on long rides. Not even close. On my way home today, on destination, I had one "offer" in an area that is underserved. Pickup was 25 minutes away, roughly 23-24 miles. Trip was 9-10 minutes back to the interstate. Pay offered was $9.27. There is NO way I will go that far out of my way for that. We also had a reservation yesterday for this morning. Pickup was 4:24 AM for a 35 minute trip to the closest of the three airports. So, basically arrive at 5 AM. The first arrival at this airport was at 8:30 AM, and about 20 minutes for bags to arrive, so basically from 5 to 9 AM waiting for $30.86. And no, local trips in that city are not an option for me, they have a ride on demand on their transit system app, which generates a LOT of 15 minute to pickup/5 minute trip/$4.78 fare trips, with NO chance of a tip as its 3rd party.

Uber does this intentionally. They could have easily fixed most problems. The app allows for someone to order 1 item 20 miles away with no tip. Uber won't even double mileage pay that far?! Gig apps could easily stop upside down, under minimum wage contracts from the app. Or no tip options on regular orders, or show both locations on batch orders, or not send the farthest driver to store the second the order is placed, sending drivers too far for arrival times. It's easy but only is intentionally worse. Uber does not get tips or drive miles. They only collect more money in fees for more orders done. That's it😢

Mind, I'm way further away at this point. Fare was not even $11. Never mind the stupidness I get when I'm in Venice, Santa Monica or Brentwood. Defies all logic considering these locations will always take more than 30 minutes (IF YOU ARE LUCKY) to go to LAX. Clearly the powers that be still don't get it. Pricing is not a priority. However what the algorithm NEVER takes into account is the fact that long rides into the far reaches of the city or to another will not result in a return trip most of the time. We get offered $35 dollar rides to go to a city outside the Phoenix metro area. Its about 35 miles, and you will most likely have to drive all the way back with no return trip.

I made a discovery that was really jaw dropping. I was renting a car to drive at first, and I was getting decent trips most of the time. But the cost of the rental as well as has, I had to make $500 a week before a dime of it was mine. But I was averaging between $25-30 an hour. But that $500 off the top every week was crushing me. So, I went out and bought an electric car. My line of thought was that if I cut that cost down to $600 a month between car payment and insurance I would be ok and not struggle to pay my bills so much. I WAS WRONG.. As soon as I bought my own car, that $25-30 dropped like a rock. I've been having a hard time breaking $15 an hour some days. And where in at, we haven't been getting quests or boats for about 6 months at least. And knowing my worth, I don't take $3 and $4 rides unless time and distance makes it acceptable. I was getting so many that my acceptance rate stopped from 95% at the time I began driving my own car, all the way down to 70% in less than a month. Unfortunately, I'm in Florida. Which means pro big business, anti worker. So the positive things going on in other states will probably never reach into Florida.

No. The algorithm is still favoring Uber's bottom line, only. It appears to be programmed to offer trips as low as the state's minimum wage in which the trip originates, without any considerations to a driver's operating costs for their vehicle. I know there's potentially a lot of individual metrics Uber could consider implementing when programming the algorithms operating parameters, but it shouldn't have taken a whole state (referring to MA) enacting restrictive legislation to force Uber's hand! There are other ways this could have been done that account for the independent contractor's needs and make Uber more profitable, if you ask me. For example: offer customers a lower price for being paired with contractors that have older, lower rated, vehicles vs newer, better maintained vehicles or lower driver ratings based on objective criteria (ie - a better experience vs ONLY car size). The fact that my, clean, well cared for and often complimented, newer Honda Accord with a smoother ride gets offered the same exact UberX fare as the beat up 12 year old Prius that handles with a suspension that's shot and smells like BO and cigarettes, seriously offers riders two very different experiences. Same goes if you have a driver who is hard on the brakes vs one that coasts cleanly into stopping more often than not. Also, time to arrival has got to go. Until a rider is paired with a driver, time to arrival is a bad guess at best. I would be very interested to see the metrics behind how "on time" driver's actually are these days to those upfront time estimates they're providing riders.

There's a reason my acceptance rate has dropped from 80% to 25% in the past year. I have to deny a dozen trips before I get a single one that is worth the drive. I refuse to drive 20 minutes for 4$. And it seems like prices are getting worse, but passengers are complaining that they're paying more? Someone is making money but it's not the drivers.

This feels like vindication for me as a rideshare driver with roughly a month under my belt. I say this because while it has primarily come from the food delivery requests (& DEFINITELY “shop & pay” [to a point where “shop & pay” will remain OFF on my account]), I’ve also hesitantly accepted several low paying/greater distance ride requests for fear of my acceptance rate plummeting & ultimately causing me to be deactivated or something. Granted, Uber seemingly prices things MUCH more fairly vs Lyft (in my experience/in my market). I see FAR more requests that seem pretty fair on Uber, whereas with Lyft, I will CONSISTENTLY receive ride requests that just seem absolutely insulting (i.e. 18 miles [ONE WAY] for like 4 dollars. At the same time, it seems like I receive more tips on Lyft vs Uber, but then the amount of ride requests I receive on Lyft is dismal during the day (compared to Uber), & then at night it flip flops lol. And even with the day/night flip flop, one day I might kick ass on Lyft all day long while Uber is completely dead, but then the next day I’m rockin n rollin on Uber all day long & Lyft is seemingly hibernating (in the Summer lol). So it’s a lot that I’m still trying to figure out… Nonetheless, this is helpful, as I’ve felt so much pressure to accept EVERY ride (as I attempt to reach gold/diamond/etcetcetc on both platforms). One thing I find sad is how at least one of the platforms (Lyft) will put you in “Gold” & then the minute your driving score goes back down by a percentage point or so (for not accepting a couple rides/etc), they put you back in “Silver” lmao. Sh*ts petty asf, & can screw with your mental health if you allow it to (I won’t). Either way, at this point, I’m just gonna focus on accepting what makes sense (no longer worrying about the “Gold/Platinum/etc. milestones or perks) & ultimately stick to what will have me at the gas station less than 12x a day (in my gas guzzler [aka- Gen 3 Escalade 🥵]). Initially, I wanted to hit the milestones as I assumed either platform would operate similar to Instacart (whom I no longer work with) where they allow you to have first priority for some of the better paying requests, but at this point I refuse to drive myself crazy trying to keep up with either platforms pressure to hit this milestone/that milestone only to have them take it away a day or so later solely because I’m refusing to accept every request.

Part of your problem is that you think gas is your main expense. You didnt have $50 income in your pocket you had $50 of revenue! This is the biggest problem with vast majority of drivers, they don’t know the difference between revenue and income which leads to failure.

The algorithm and the pay structure is crap!! In Miami we get offered to drive 40 minutes for 10nor 12 dollars 🤬🤬 any driver that accepts it is dumb and cannot do the math!! Uber calculator works on miles and pay maybe.0.50 a mile, the algorithm needs to adjust from traffic. That's the customers problem not the drivers

In fairness to Uber, there is evidence that drivers are accepting these unprofitable trips. Driver oversaturation may be the cause. That said, I absolutely do not get why, when I have been seeing airport and other long trip requests coming around and around again and never being accepted by drivers in the area, sometimes for hours, why in the world does Uber double down by lowering the rider prices for the trips and offer drivers even less for these trips? That's terrible customer service for the riders and the drivers. Lowering the prices is not going to increase acceptance of the trips! Yes, it's 💯% on Uber here. $1 per mile to the driver on these trips, absolute minimum!

Sergio, I take at least one uber trip a month mostly for research purposes. I want to see what it’s like to be a passenger. I ask every driver what their acceptance rate. I’m shocked SHOCKED at how often I hear something close to 100%. The ants are real. And my suspicion is that they outnumber us by a wide margin.

Thank you sir for being an advocate for all of us ride share drivers who are actually trying to earn enough money to pay our bills. I totally agree that the numbers have doubled in riders since I started driving over 5 years ago but the pay has definitely decreased by at least 20-25% and I’m driving in a heavily populated area in Southern California.

I would like to hear from him how much the driver should get from what the rider pay? What I heard before it should be 60/40 and this is comes only after if the rider pay tips which means that Uber knowing that the customer pays tips deduct them from upfront fares. So I would like to hear from him…

Uber's CEO didn't just say "it's on us." He specifically said "the signal WE WANT" is for drivers to reject trips that are not desirable. Uber is now planning on punishing drivers for having low acceptance rates, DOING WHAT UBER WANTED. It would be shocking if nobody at Uber had the moral compass to see the ethical dilemma here.

Dara knows hes ripping off the rider by overcharging them. He also knows the amount that's being charged from the rider isn't being distribute properly to the deiver. Dara only cares about one thing and that is"the money he is making and the bonuses hes getting". Dara will ride this rollercoaster until it brakes down. Then move on to something else to do the exact same thing.

I’ve recently learned here in Las Vegas that drivers are receiving 1/3 of the fare that the passengers are paying. Apparently from speaking with Uber support, they are charging the passengers around 1/3 of the fare for insurance, something they implemented in May 2024. I don’t get it. I feel it’s another way for Uber to take money from the drivers. Do you know or any vegas drivers know anything about this.
