See?? ThermaCell products work even when you don't use them! What a Brilliant piece of kit! 😆(I also note that the anti-rhino paint you used on your gear is working well, I didn't see a single rhinoceros during your entire video).

I would have been very disappointed about the firewood as well. :( It is too bad that folks can't replace at least some of what they use. Good on you for leaving some more wood, don't blame you for cutting back. Thanks for sharing your night out! :) :)

Hang in there buddy! You left the campsite better than you found it. Myself and other subscribers do the same. That's all we control. I often go around the campsite looking for "trip hazard stumps" left by previous campers and cut them off at ground level. It makes those middle of the night latrine strolls less dangerous. Not that long ago I picked up an axe to split firewood as I found a saw was fine for cutting logs, but not much else. I'll leave some wood for the next campers and hopefully it encourages them to do the same.

That is a great tip I am going to add to my visits. Cutting the stumble stumps. Great idea. I am going to keep leaving wood. Just not an entire weekends worth. I have seen a few videos from other You-tubers doing campsite cleanups. It feels good when you see it and know you are not the only one trying to make a difference. Thank you for sharing. I was half joking with that theory in this video. I just came back from another weekend and really paid attention to what happened to the mosquitoes. I am really starting to believe that Thermacell is getting credit for what happens naturally. More on that subject to come, I am sure.

Hey Jeep. I share your complaint. I have returned to my site to discover not only my wood burnt but also my bench and tripod plus a lot of garbage. I have moved spots twice. Oh well, public woods. But some respect would be nice. We just got back from two weeks in Kouchibouguac National Park. I was testing out the Thermacell Backpacker and Rechargeable units. I also had old school mosquito coils as a control. I had a mixed set of results. At no time did they work 100% but they did appear to help some. My test was to get up and walk away a good distance, outside of the "dome of safety" and was rewarded with a coordinated assault. To be fair, the coils worked no better. I do have a theory about using them around a fire. I think the convective currents may draw the repellant up and away. Overall, they did not work as well as I had hoped. Thanks for sharing
@EconoChallenge Жыл бұрын
Hey Mark, My original and continued objection is with the advertisements. They do not work as advertised. I will agree that under certain wind conditions these ThermaCell units do have an impact on the number of mosquitoes in your area. Nothing like they suggest in the Ads. I agree the wind currents generated by a good fire would have an impact on performance. Now I am trying to understand why so many "review" videos on KZbin suggest it works fantastic.
@MarkYoungBushcraft Жыл бұрын
@@EconoChallenge Hey Jeep. I was glad I was able to watch your review before starting my own testing. I found I was much more critical of just going with my "impressions" as well as being influenced by what others say about the units. I have voiced my concerns to Thermacell but have not heard back yet

Ok, here's the suggestion. Consider it a gift to those without the skills, discipline and empathy. It's a gift and if you give it, you make someone else's day better. After time, folks get the skills and develop the empathy. They'll get there. But if you stop, well... they won't learn anything. If you're ever in AB, you've got a hiking partner.
@pascalmarti4403 Жыл бұрын
My solution: I always carry a twigstove, preferably one of my woodgasifiers. The advantage, I need less wood and still get to have a fire. Takes no time to process enough wood to last forever and I leave no trace. Needs no firepit. No need for piling wood. Very econo😊
@EconoChallenge Жыл бұрын
I agree. I have yet to build a wood gas stove that works well. I also have not tried lately. I don't cook on the fire unless I have run out of fuel. If I am camped on a site with no fire pit, I will not build one. That way I can leave no trace. Otherwise I spend my time fixing what is already there and cleaning out all the garbage.
@journeyman7189 Жыл бұрын
Interesting theory Jeep. You may be on to something :) I've never understood the idea on not leaving the campsite better than you found it. How could someone use all the wood and not replace any of it? Even if it was multiple different people at different time taking a bit at a time. When its low help out the next camper. Nate
@EconoChallenge Жыл бұрын
You know mosquitoes come and go with the temperature. Right? I think ThermaCell is getting credit. No joke. As for the wood. One viewer asked me to consider my own behaviour when I was younger and did not know better. That helped me be a bit more humble about it. I will keep trying to be a good example to learn from and hopefully they are paying attention.

You seem to be Canadian. I come up there to Quetico and I'm the same way you are. We leave wood for others and like it when others leave it for us. I'm American, but when I'm up there, I'm Canadian. It's greedy, it's atrocious to use your wood and leave none behind for others.

Just like I told a few years ago, maybe longer, probably longer, that you deserve way more subscribers and views than you have. I like to leave a bit of firewood behind and always hope I find some when I come back. Challenge is that I don’t get out much anymore and way too many greenhorns are coming into the forest and don’t practice the old ways. I do respect many of the younger backpackers as they practice no trace camping, so there’s that. For some reason, when you said you didn’t have your normal eggs, I thought he’s going to have something from Happy Yak😂

I remember that comment you made often. I always hoped to become more popular and maybe make enough money to offset the cost of getting out there. Now I am glad I have stayed small. It would be a shame to not have the time to read comments and learn from the people who come to watch my videos. It has been the single best way for me to learn form so many different people. I just wanted you to know that first comment really stuck with me.

A good majority of what is on You Tube today is pure crap. And I've unsubbed to many of the channels that I watched grow from nothing who got too big so they decided to start hiring people like editors and cameramen. Suddenly the personal touch is gone. And they begin to script their videos and that's it for me. They were good channels until they got too big for their britches. Watching your videos is like going on a camping trip with a friend. It's like I'm there with you. Don't ever change that personal touch. Oh and I love that you left just a little wood this time. You don't need to supply the world with fire wood. But if someone shows up out there while it's raining like you did, they will have enough to get started and they can get their own wood afterwards. I always leave a camp better than I found it. You do that too.

If the thermocell repels 90% of the mosquitoes, and then you only get visited by 100 mosquitoes, you only get bit 10 times. If you get visited by 100,000 mosquitoes, and only 10 % make it through, you get eaten alive by 10,000 mosquitoes. Math will always get you in the end. Thank you for sharing your day with us, Jeep. Stay safe and stay cool

I just got back from another weekend in the wilderness. Same situation. Mosquitoes were bad when it was warm and humid and then they disappeared with the cool of the night. Id like to think it was a family with small kids and a dog... and in the chaos of packing they forgot an axe. And your woodpile cooked their meal, made some smiles, and contributed to overall good in the world. And one day that kid will grow up and leave you a woodpile. Keep leaving wood my friend, resentment doesnt hurt anyone but yourself.

A great cure for the anger of injustice is to look back and recall the times when you yourself have been unjust towards others yourself. If you want to be forgiven for your own sins you must be willing to forgive others for their sins against you if you want to avoid hypocrisy. Perhaps this is Gods way of teaching you about forgiveness. Show me a teenager who did not get up to such mischief in the woods when they were young and selfish. Rising above it in forgiveness is characture building. There is your answer.

The wood mystery? Not exactly The firewood got burned. No you didn;t get burned out of YOUR pile of firewood. You cut it(probably for something to do) and someone else used it and you then complained about it. Why didnt you just say "oh my some used the firewood" Any Canadian citizen that uses crown land is entitled to do as they see fit while using it providing they abide by the crown land use rules. And yes the rules say you are to leave nothing behind.Yes burning the whole lot was NOT very sportsmanlike but pissing and moaning about it isnt much better either.
