After using the Thermarest Neoair Xtherm for a year now I thought it was time for a review. The Xtherm is a four season sleeping pad that is both loved and hated. In the review I give you the truth about Neoair Xtherm.
There is a lot of reviews on Neoair Xtherm, many of them are talking about the noise and focus on what is bad about the pad...the truth is it is a great pad for all 4 seasons. I have nothing to complain about after using it for a year now and one of my favorite pieces of gear.
I do recommend going for the Large version due to the width, but if weight is the most important the regular will do the job just as good regarding insulation.
For mor info on the pad, visit Thermarest.

You are absolutely right, switched to this mattress 5 weeks into our thru-hike of the PCT and never looked back. I'm a gram-weenie but the additional weight compared to my previous NeoAir Xlite is absolutely worth it.

Many thanks for another great video! For guys annoyed by noise the Exped Synmat HL Winter may be an interesting alternative. Slightly lower R value 5.2 but no rustling and 9cm thick (good for side sleepers). 600g in WL (wide and long) version. Coming with 2in1 waterproof stuff/pump sack.

You are welcome 🙂 and yes, well…it depends on how hot of a summer it is. Have used it around +22C with no problem. If the ground is hot, it also isolates against that as well. Difficult to say, but I would recommend to try at least. When it comes to what version, I think the rectangular versions are a little bitt waste of space and weight. The large size mummy shapes gives plenty of space sleeping on. If weight is of importance, I would definitely go for the Large Mummy, 64 by 196 cm.

Best review i have seen on this sleeping pad from thermarest xterm with new valve. I owned the older version without new valve the large one and i have used it in sourh india vellore where it was more then 50Celcius. This sleeping pad is the best only one complain, if you use this without sleeping pad in warm conditions use a sheet on it becauce the sweat of our body can make some color difference on the top layer of the sleeping pad. The noise will go completely when you used the sleeping pad. Me and my body’s no one have problems with the noise at night time I have sold the older one and i will buy the Xterm large (mummy to safe weight) with new valve. I have subscribed to your channel

Thnak You, this is great to know to hve confirmation, that people tend to exaggerate, including noise with this pad, especially the fact that it fades overtime, which nobody really mentioned before in their review. Also they made it sound like you are literally eating crisps in a cinema full of people, when it comes to camping with group, myaybe they need to bring some melatonine pills or have better sleep system if everything irritates them so badly, I had a feeling they exaggerate things a little bit with this pad. My only concern is the foot box, not sure if narrower space comparing to a rectangular pad will be an issue there.

Hi and glad you liked the review 🙂 well the narrower/mummy shaped Xtherm has for be been no problem since it is so wide but sure, compared to the rectangular one it’s smaller. I see no reason to go rectangular but I do understand the ones who like it, more like the bed at home.

Thank you for this great review! One question though, how tall are you? For a woman I am quite tall (178 cm) and my shoulders are also quite wide/broad. I sleep both supine and on my sides. I am thinking that maybe I will find the regular version too short and too narrow.
@roberthammenrudh
@roberthammenrudh 3 жыл бұрын
First, thanks 😊🙂 and well, I am 180 so much like you regarding length. I previously had a 183 cm pad, works ok but the 196 cm large Xtherm is so much better. Also regarding width, although I am a side sleeper I do sometimes use the supine position and then the 64 cm is perfect. My elbows always stay in the pad 🙂 and do not recommend the regular because of that. So…my recommendation would be to go for the Large, if not the weight is more important.

In the bad old days when your only option was how much loft to get in a mummy bag, side sleeping was often an adventure ending in damp areas around your head from condensation in the bag. Sleeping almost exclusively on your back became the norm for a tired hiker. But quilts have been a great advancement for the restless sleeper like me -- who will usually spend a minimal amount of time flat . . .

I'll stick with my 1996 Therm-A-Rest GuideLite Long + Z-Rest. Both are 28 years old, and still in like-new condition. I've never been cold using them together. Yes, they are more bulky, and heavier. All this ultralight stuff seems like too much. I'm sure it's great for people who go to extremes. But for regular folks, who spend 1-3 nights in the back country, the old setup is fine. IMO, Cascade Designs made a big mistake by no longer offering a standard rectangular Therm-A-Rest. People are used to them, and they're comfortable. I can't imagine why I would want a mummy-shaped sleeping pad. Back when I did a lot of camping, the whole industry was much more simple. There are so many options to choose from these days, and so many of them are cheaply made compared to camping gear from the 1980's and 1990's.

I'm buying a pop up camper this week and am planning a 14 day trip in mid to late November on the Canadian border. The camper comes with a heated mattress but I don't know how warm that will get and I am always cold. Should I buy one of those sleeping pads that are rated 4 or above and put it on top of the heated mattress or would that not be effective? Are these pads meant only for tent camping? Would the warmth from the heated mattress heat the camping pad all the way through so that I feel it in my sleeping bag? Temps are supposed to be in the 20's but I want to be prepared for worst case. Note that I am always cold.
@roberthammenrudh
@roberthammenrudh 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa, well for that kind of temperatures you will not need any additional heat in the bed. At least not with the Xtherm. The problem with heat from underneath is, the pad will also isolate from that…if you are worried that the heat in the bed is bad is not good enough, then buy the Xtherm and you will be ok no matter what and the pad doesn’t know if it is in a tent or a camper 🙂

I got the Xtherm Large Max variation just a week ago, haven't slept on it yet but tried it inside and also with the simple trekker chair kit which works incredibly well. I can really feel my heat radiating back at me and i initially find the pad very comfortable even as a side sleeper, same when bending it in shape for the chair kit, super comfy. I'm bringing it to the swedish mountains this summer, I can't wait to wake up in the morning, fold it into a chair and have a hot cup of coffee in the early morning while keeping warm and comfy with a nice view of the mountains. I feel confident this pad is gonna do it's job not only well enough, but even brilliantly. Should be well worth the money if you love going out into nature and doing camps.

I am 184cm tall and prefer a Large size pad where my arms/hands stay on the pad and don’t feel like I will roll off in the night, so I bought a seatosummit ether light insulated XT 3.2 Rv which is very comfortable, but I am a cold sleeper it isn’t warm enough in the winter to have my sleeping bag on top of rather than inside the bag. I am trying to decide if I should get a Thermarest Neoair XTherm in regular size so I can get even more warmth by bringing it inside my sleeping bag and then using a thin but wide closed cell foam pad under the sleeping bag just so my hands stay warm if they drop off the pad, or if this pad is warm enough then I should just get the large size version and put my sleeping bag on top of it? I am pretty sure the large size won’t fit in my sleeping bag with me laying on my side 🤔
@roberthammenrudh

Well, my recommendation would be to buy the Large size because with 6.9R you are likely to stay warm anyways! Depending off course under what conditions …I use mine also during summer but only hike 3 season…coldest for me has been -7 degree Celsius and as a cold sleeper myself I have had no problems to stay warm. Maybe you will use it also during winter and much colder temperatures so worth thinking about. You know your body the best and under what conditions you will hike so…go with the gut feeling 👍🏻

I'm hiking a lot and meet like every time different people with whom I share the shelters. I often see thermarest neo air x lite or something like that. also other "noisy" cheap mattress. Me myself I bought once the thermarest neao air x lite..and I sold it quite fast. First of all, the reason "it's too loud" is bullshit, because if somebody is turning during the night, I hear it because of all his gear, I hear his sleeping bag moving, sliding etc. And I would say that this is not changeable. It was never the mattress only! Ok I didnt like the noise from my thermarest but the most I didnt like was the sleeping comfort and that it was slippery like hell. nowadays i carry a klymit stativ v luxe sl something like 700-800g, and sometimes a sea to summit camp plus sl in regular wide (1300g), I am not "wide" but I like the comfort. I am also carrying a 100l backpack because I need it. In winter season, I carry my 3kg sleeping bag and I would never change it to a down-sleeping bag even when its not that heavy. my backpack empty weight is like 4 kg etc I don't want to say that it is easy but I am ready to carry my comfort. there is nothing worse then being wet or getting wet the night or even a bad night. I am always sleeping good and more hours then at home and I would always recommand to carry some gramms more when it means to sleep a bit better. But you dont have to carry what I do, I just mean

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm Leaks out the WingLock Valve /// I got a new one and does the same! slow leak.. Test your Valve by using a bowl or pool or anything that you can get the Valve underwater, test closed and open and see if your mat does leak before you go on the trail.. I even pop the top off and i was surprised it does not seat down to the rubber gasket! This would be easy fix for them, they just need the inside of the cap to have the round plastic under the cap to set more into the Tube around the rubber seal.. I do love this mat! But i wont ever use it on Hiking trip ever! I hope none of you have this same problem, no way to stop the leak, when it not coming from the mat it self.

I will never go back to mat that is around 20 inch wide! Thank you for the feed back, many will not admit that the sleeping mat leaks out the port! What a shame i really love this mat!!! Even with a second valve it does the same! This could be an easy fix, the black cap needs to stop all air, yet it does not! And the yellow flap that controls air going in and out, does not hold back when a heavy person like me at 220 pounds is on the mat. I think it leaks for me is the valve is not rated for someone over 200 pounds? Just a guess? I sub you today, Have a Blessed Hiking Day!

Yes, that's not up to par for any air mattress. My XTherm regular is now 3 years old and holds air very well. I've been using it daily for several months now and only just recently decided to firm it up a bit with a couple of bags-full. Speaking of which, it's well to remember that blowing directly into the valve will introduce water vapor, which of course will lose volume upon condensing. In related details, there have been complaints about the newer inflation bags being too leaky to use. If the new wingnut valve is even a little more restricted than than the older version (which I find simple to use), the relatively higher pressure required could be an issue for a marginal bag.
