At 135,000 my 2016 Tahoe started the same stuff as everyone else here has described. No temp indication and fan running after shutdown. Dealership service guys diagnosed it as a thermostat and wanted a mere $540 to replace it. I thought that sounded pretty high, so I hunted and found your channel. Following your exceptionally well-done tutorial, I easily replaced both the thermostat and coolant temp sensor for about $90 worth of parts. God bless you! I am the furthest thing from a mechanic. I always said that, if I was smart enough to be a mechanic, I wouldn't have to be a pilot!

In case anyone else is wondering about torque specs: According to my Haynes manual the torque specs are 89 in-lbs for the thermostat housing bolts (unless you have a 6.0L engine, then it's 132 in-lbs) and 15 ft-lbs for the engine coolant temperature sensor (all engines). Hope this helps someone. Thanks for the video!

This video just saved me over $700 and kept me from having to take a day off work to get my car serviced. I am far from a mechanic, but the details in this video made it super easy to follow. I was able to get everything I needed (including the correct type of ratchet and sockets) for around $70 at the auto parts store. Great video!

Had this happen today on my 2015 Suburban. No check engine light, but all the same symptoms, on a cold and rainy day, so clearly not overheating. Heat was still working, but weak. At 177k miles, it is time to do the replacement of sensor and thermostat anyway. GM parts prices for this and the simplicity of the job are good news.

My fan on my 2015 Yukon XL just started doing the same thing with continuously running. Your video helped me diagnose the cause quickly. On my vehicle a box ended wrench had plenty of room and worked just fine to remove and replace the sensor. Just wanted to put that out there since all three of my Craftsman sets don’t come with a 19mm deep socket but my wrench sets do have 19mm.

Dude thanks so much for this video. Family and I were driving last night and I thought I heard something- was the engine fans kick on full blast. I saw the temperature gauge read ice cold and knew that wasn’t right bc we were driving for a while already. Immediately thought how I’d have to schedule a mechanic to look at it. After a quick search on you tube found your video. Bought the temperature sensor immediately from local oreillys and will be swapping this morning. Thanks a lot man! I am confident your video provided a solution!

I’m glad you found the video. If it continues it may be the thermostat you also saw in the video as it can stick open and over-cool the engine. You might want to look into getting a thermostat to have on hand. Great job fixing it yourself and saving money!

@@dannyjohnsonsgarage hey man curious what you think about this. I swapped the the temperature sensor and then just started the vehicle (cold hadn’t started it since last night). Well after starting the vehicle immediately the fan kicked on. Even after installing new temp sensor. I turned vehicle off and as I type this message the fan is still running with vehicle off, I suspect it’ll run a few mins then turn off. I don’t have and haven’t had any check engine lights. You think just the thermostat could still be the issue? Seems like maybe some other electrical problem. Thoughts?

Thank you for this instructional video. Had the same scenario as you, wife gets home with the fan running full blast. Was able to get a part quickly and replace the sensor. I didn't initially disconnect the negative battery cable because the fan eventually shut off after about 10 minutes or so. After I replaced the sensor and started her vehicle, the fan started running full blast again as it was before. I almost panicked, but turned the truck off and disconnected the battery. Went inside to let the vehicle be by itself for a 10 or so minutes. And when I reconnected the battery, it was good to go. You're probably suppose to disconnect the battery cable anytime you're rooting around in the engine bay, but I was in a hurry and skipped that step. Anyway, it worked out. And one more thing, being the butter fingers that I apparently am, I dropped the little white clip holder down onto the under engine shield which I had to take partially off to fetch the clip. No big deal, but it was an annoying extra 20 minutes to the job. So word to the wise, hang on to that thing when you remove it. Thanks again.
@dannyjohnsonsgarage
@dannyjohnsonsgarage Жыл бұрын
Correct. You want to disconnect the negative terminal when working on anything so you don’t short anything out, and in this case it also resets the check engine light and code so without disconnecting it, it will still think it has a problem

What temperature is showing? If it’s still at 0 (shows 160) when you’ve been driving for awhile and it should be warmed up, it still has something to do with the temp sensor (or the wiring on the car side). Other things I checked were the fan relay. A relay is like a switch, so if it sticks on it will continue to power the fan. If the car is, indeed overheating, it may keep the fan on.

Danny, I need you expert tootlage on this issue. I have the same Denali as you minus the shade of white. We bought it used four years ago and had three trouble free years until last year. Swapped the air ride for shock and struts, had to replace the faulty ac condenser and get all fluids flushed at the same time plus tranny service. Just two months ago I was taking the kids to school and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree and it went way down on power while the gauges danced around. First trip to the mechanic which was a different one from the suspension one cause they were questionable to find after the fact. So first trip, they “check and clean” the connection of the battery cable from the vehicle to the battery. The one under the dash was good and the one to the frame was removed so they could scrape off the paint on the frame so the connection was metal to metal. Not even a mile from the shop and BOOM, same issue. I go back cause now the fan it on loud and long just like yours in this video. I watched your video and told them to check the Temp sensor and they said, oh no it’s the Thermostat cause we see then all the time. They do not replace the Temp sensor. New to me but whatever, so I go home and next morning, BOOM it’s Christmas morning. Now third trip in a week and they say, well we are going to change the cable cause 99% of the time that fixes the issue. Would have been nice to do that first before the other two useless trips. Two months go by and yesterday my transmission won’t shit out of first or second. I go to O’Reilly’s to scan and it’s a Transmission control module issue along with a computer not communicating code. When I get back in, the CEL went away and it drives like normal. I called a shop that O’Reilly recommended quote me $980 plus tax. Tranny service, gasket, fluid and a new harness which contains the transmission control module plus 4.8 hours labor at $150 per. Basically, the ECM is the main issue right , cause today I was getting every light, dash dancing tranny not shifting but not limp mode. My wife and I want to punt this thing but feel bad for the next owner if we don’t get it fixed for good. It is still in great condition, just paid $800 for brake and front rotors a couple months ago and it has just under 105k on the clock. Should we take the $1k and put it toward getting a new or refurbished ECM installed? I love your videos and it was one of the reasons I bought our Denali cause I found your channel. Sorry the message was long but I wanted you to have the whole story. If you get the end and can reply with your advice up I would appreciate it greatly. I just have not found anyone honest in the automotive world to help me. Thanks Danny.

It does sound like something as simple as a bad ground for the ecm , or possibly a bad harness. As for the temp sensor, you will know if it reads zero (looks like 160) when it’s warm. It should be 210 degrees when warmed up. A friend of mine had similar issues and it wouldn’t shift and his was just a ground for ecm. Usually if something is bad that part fails (like my temp sensor for the transmission). If multiple things start wigging out, it can be a ground for all of them. I do have a harness video for the transmission, and if yours is also the 8 speed you’ll want to watch the video to see which transmission fluid to use and also I cover the different part numbers that allow you to simply change the bottom part of the harness Vs the entire harness, which will save you from dropping the valve body. If you believe it’s a sensor on the harness, you can easily change it yourself for 10% of what they are charging you. It’s hard because there are no guarantees, and the flush could have hurt the transmission. Changing the fluid out is a more gentle solution in the future kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqmklotsmb-VeaM

1) I wish every video was this good. Well done sir! 2) while doing this repair, I lost the white clip that snaps down on the connector going into the temperature sensor (the one he uses pliers on effectively). Dealership wants $60 for the whole connector. Anyone know where I can get just the white clip?

You mentioned adding coolant to the expansion degasser tank and the radiator hose. Are these the only 2 places to add coolant? At 12:55, you mentioned “filling in all 3 of these places”. Do we need to add coolant to the radiator somehow too? Thank you!
@dannyjohnsonsgarage
@dannyjohnsonsgarage 5 ай бұрын
Yes, the radiator is the main concern, so I like to fill it into the hose that leads to the radiator until it comes out the thermostat, and also the degas tank is great as long as levels don’t drop to induce air into the system. It should burp out most of the air that’s left into the degas tank but you don’t want to start with a lot of air. Then running the heater on full blast helps

if I am going to change only the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor, should I still follow the steps to unplug the bigger coolant hose that goes to the radiator? or can I just skip to the part where I replace the Temp sensor?
@dannyjohnsonsgarage
@dannyjohnsonsgarage 7 ай бұрын
I would strongly suggest the thermostat as well. It’s more likely it’s sticking open and changing the sensor will reset the system but it will come on again. If you do just the sensor you can simply talk it off and it will lose some coolant, but don’t do it when the engine is hot. It will spray fluid everywhere that will also be hot

Thanks so much for this video. This quickly resolved the issue with my wife's Tahoe. If you lose that white clip and the little black piece that slides down into the connector, is this a common part that can be found at a local autopart shop, or do you know of the part number I can order. Mine went flying out during removal...

I did the thermostat as well in case it was sticking open and overcooling. It’s hard to say if GM’s default with the fan happens because it’s the sensor or the fact it should not be 160 degrees and turns the fan on in a panic mode no matter what. Mine has been good so far with the GM sensor and I bought it from the dealer for twice what it is in the Amazon link lol

Did the job and it went great. My only concern is the blue permatex threadlocker (looks similar to the loctite you used in the video). I put a decent amount on the thermostat bolts and when tightening down noticed that some of the blue was leaking out the edges. I’m worried it could’ve also leaked into the middle of the housing and into the coolant. Is it worth removing and checking in your opinion? Thanks!

@@dannyjohnsonsgarage sorry for the late reply about this. I read that threadlocker can make plastic brittle and crack. The thermostat housing is plastic. Do you think the threadlock that leaked onto the housing would cause any damage to the housing over time?

I suppose it depends on the symptoms. Is the vehicle actually running cold or showing zero temperature when it’s warm? It’s very possible. It could also be a fault on the cars harness side and the sensor is good, or the car’s electrical burning up the bad sensor. Did you get a check engine light?
