This happened to me over the weekend, I decided to replace both the sensor and thermostat. In my situation, I lost about a half gallon of antifreeze. Total cost at Auto Zone for the sensor, thermostat and a gallon of antifreeze was $110. Tools/Supplies were Channel Locks for the hose clamps, 19mm deep socket for the Sensor, 10mm socket for the thermostat and negative battery terminal, old towel to absorb antifreeze spillage, and funnel for reservoir to add new antifreeze. The sensor came with an adequate amount of Teflon Tape, so I didn't add more. After laying out the needed tools, it took less than 30 minutes to complete the job. This task is easier than an oil change.

I got my 2017 Silverado LTZ in 2016.Yesterday my fan stayed on and the AC stopped working. I followed both links. I changed out the sensor, thermostat and hose and I'm back on the road. Here a FYI if you’ve had this issue on the road and can’t figure out if you need a tow truck just disconnect the negative cable it will reset your computer and the temperature gauge will start working again for about a hour but replace the part like this video shows and keep riding.👍🏆

Funny thing is, disconnecting the battery terminal for a few seconds stops the fan issue for me anywhere from a day to MONTHS. I'm obviously resetting something more than the gauges. Still, it comes back eventually. I can't help thinking it's not a sensor or thermostat "sticking" as that is mechanical, not electrical.

Great video. It helped yesterday on my '14 GMC. The comment about removing the big wide intake helped, just two hose clamp fittings and two EGR clamps. A couple other symptoms were a check engine light coming on (don't know code, don't have a scanner), and my air conditioning only blew warm air when the coolant temp was 160. Seems good now. By the way, if you carefully remove the coolant fill cap on the left side of compartment, it'll depressurize it and hardly any coolant will come out when you pull the sensor out.

Sometimes after swapping the faulty temperature sending unit, the fans may continue to run full blast for a few driving cycles if it threw a code. To speed that along so you don't have to wait the few driving cycles for the code to clear, unhook the negative cable from the battery for 10 minutes to reset the PCM while you're swapping out the sensor. It will clear the code and will run normally the next time you start it, instead of two or three times later.

The video did help a lot. So thank you! The only thing I would add is that on a 2016 Chevy Tahoe, the ECT Sensor is in a very tight place next to the thermostat. It is very difficult to get the harness cap off the sensor. Because the area was small to work in it wasn't easy to remove the harness. There is a light colored plastic clip that needs to be removed first so you can pinch the small black release tab so the harness cap separates from the sensor. Otherwise, in a tight area not knowing this you could damage the harness cap that snaps on to the sensor. I didn't know what to expect and was concerned to break the plastic. Had a mechanic friend help after many tries and then it was easy. But not knowing this made it difficult.

I had the same problem, quick search brought me to your video, and I was able to get this problem fixed for under $20 in no time at all. Thanks! On another note - when the sensor stopped working, it threw a code and my check engine light came on. As a fail safe, I presume, it shut down my A/C. I was worried this was unrelated and I had two problems. Once I replaced the sensor, my check engine light was still on, and my A/C was still not working. I went to O'Reilly to get them to reset the codes, and they told me they won't do that anymore. Not sure if that was true or if they just didn't want to do it. Anyway, so I disconnected the battery for a few minutes, and after that the codes were cleared and my A/C was working again right away. So, maybe that experience will help someone else along the way. Thanks for the good video Amigo!

Hey Gail! We're glad you found the video helpful. Typically we found that if the fan is still running when the vehicle is off, turning the truck on and off again will stop the fan. Also, if the issue starts again, you will need to disconnect the battery to reset the trucks computer. The truck will then read all of the new components correctly. It doesn't happen all of the time, but sometimes it's necessary. Also, teflon tape can sometimes make the sensor miss-read. Removing that can also help fix any further issues. Have a great day and thanks for watching! 🙂

P0117 and P0119. Tried new coolant sensor, fixed it for an afternoon, next day fan on high again, found someone had a cavalier that had a bad A/C pressure sensor that told the computer that the pressure was high causing the fan to turn on high. So, went to find they put the sensor by the compressor by the tire wheel well, (great place up in the north with salt, can’t leave a good thing alone and leave up above). While truck was running and fan on high I unplugged the sensor, nothing happened, plugged back in and the fan calmed down to a normal speed. Took back apart and installed some dielectric grease on the connector. So far a week later still good. GM connectors suck. Had problems with my Malibu brake light connectors by dash before I sold it.

Hey Derek, that's a very interesting solution. Also one I've never heard of. Aso for the issue we are specifically talking about, no codes were thrown and none stored in the computer. Sounds to me that you may have had a different issue all together. Two things I've been telling people to do are, replaced the thermostat and disconnect the battery for ten minutes to reset the trucks computer. That will allow your computer to reset and read the new parts correctly. Keep us posted on your fix, and if it solves the issue!
