ThermoWorks Smoke Gateway Review!

I bought the smoke gateway not long after it came out. I have used it on a few smokes and it works great. I loved it so much that I started using it when I cook in the oven. I just stick the probe in whatever I'm cooking and slide it into the oven. Open the app and set the high alarm then forget about it till my phone goes off. At $100 it's not cheap but its worth it to me.

After the initial gateway internet setup, do you have to repeat this process for every use or does it automatically connect?

LOve your channel and love Thermoworks gear. One question.. can you still monitor the Smoke out of range of your home wifi via your inernet? Say if you wanted to run down the shops and grab some more wood. Or is it restricted to just the wifi range of your home?

I completely forgot to mention it in the video...but YES...it works when NOT connected to your home WiFi. I turned my WiFi off and switched over to cellular and it worked just fine.

Can you still use the handheld monitor that comes with the Smoke when using the Gateway?

Yes, and one of the unique things about it, is that you can use the handheld device or wi-fi device together or not…. or both at the same time. And the wi-fi automatically connects after the initial setup. Very cool! The only thing you can’t do with this is add a fan to your grill or smoker and control it. There are different options for this purpose.

Love the gateway. I notice that I can lose the logging if I turn off the base first?... or maybe you can share how to properly save logging without losing it. Otherwise, this unit is excellent!

lol man....family life man. so little time to crank out videos. I cook a TON still...just don't have much time to film, edit, etc... I'm hoping to get 3-4 put up over the next 5-6 weeks during the holidays while i have more chill time.

So it's been a few months, what do you think about the gateway and the app? Do you think it's worth the extra $89 for the gateway?

There's obviously a lot of other competition on the market...but for the build quality and the design of the app...I think it's worth it if you want wireless monitoring. If you're always around the house when cooking, then it's not needed for the most part.

Sooo.. did the alarm go off at 140 or on the base unit at 195?

ChetoDaTruth The base unit goes off at whatever the base unit is set at. The app does not in any way talk to the base unit. The base unit passes along the temp and that's it. It's a one way conversation.

Kinda sucks you have to buy an add on for the wifi and it should allow you to change alarms from the app. However I am a Thermoworks fan so I will probably get it eventually. Nice video.

Why did they go with a mini USB vs micro? Everyone already has a micro usb cord, just use that. Sorry that is a pet peeve of mine...

It's just a wireless thermometer. It isn't doing any of the actual work of maintaining temps.

You're thinking the WiFi should have been built into the Smoke from the start? Assuming so...I would agree...but all in all....like you said...their products are great and I'm not going to bash them on this one.
