challenge accepted. there are four types of romance in homestuck, called the "quadrants". they are symbolized by the different suits of cards in a deck and four different but still similar colors (we'll get to that later). red heart-- known as the red quadrant, or as feeling "red" for someone, filling this quadrants (or having a partner within this particular romance) would give you a matesprit. matespritships are pretty much our understanding of romance, not much to cover or go into. pale(or pink) diamond-- known simply as the pale quadrant, or as feeling pale for someone, filling this quadrant would give you a moirail. a moirail is something like what us humans consider best friends, except with a kind of more codependency going on. a moirail is someone you feel obligated to put before you, someone who you care immensely for and their well being. while only one of the moirails caring for the other is uncommon, this is seen as an unhealthy relationship, for the care is unbalanced. black spade-- known as the black quadrant, or as feeling black for someone, filling this quadrant would give you a kismesis. a kismesistude is basically a pair of individuals who intensely hate eachother, almost to the point of violence, but still are attracted to eachother at the same time. hate-love, if you will. here's where things get confusing... stick with me. ash(or grey) quadrant-- known as feeling ashen for a pair, filling this quadrant would either give you a auspitice or label you as an auspitice. sometimes, within in a kismesistude, the hate can get so violent that someone else may see this and feel ashen about the situation, or hatefully care about the other's well being, and step in as a kind of mediator between the two. this person who steps in is known as an auspitice. the quadrants themselves are set up in a particular fashion-- the heart being to the uppermost left, the diamond being to the uppermost right, the spade being to the lower left, and the club being to the lower right. the quadrants that are on the top are the more positive types of romance, or are a more reddish color. those bellow are a more negative type of romance, or a more blacker color. those to the left are more "romantic"(as we see it) and deal with attraction(as we see it), and thus are more rich colors. those to the right are more platonic, and thus have more faded out colors. this is still pretty long, but i LOVE ranting about the quadrants. if you have any questions, feel more than free to ask! i'll be more than happy to respond.

It's actually very interesting when you think about how despite pale relationships are more on the platonic end, it's still considered Troll Romance. Making anyone whos pale for each other, still be considered in a relationship and could possibly call each other boyfriend and/or girlfriend. It's a lot more complicated socially I think

Finally, finally I can share this terrible story from when I was in the Homestuck fandom So this was around four or five years ago, I was at New York Comic Con, I was cosplaying Kankri, minding my own business. This group consisting of a Terezi and a Gamzee and a third person I can’t even remember anymore turned a corner and came into view. I was standing on a line at a booth next to a Dave cosplayer I’d never met before. The Gamzee starts honking a horn SUPER LOUD and screaming cussed at the top of his lungs (this is typical of the character but like,,,,there were young kids around on top of how inappropriate it would in any public setting) and the Dave and I just looked at each other really uncomfortably as we felt visceral second-hand embarrassment. Suddenly the Terezi runs up to the Dave, grabs his face and LICKS A STRIPE UP THIS KID’S FACE FROM JAW TO TEMPLE. The Dave looked at me with such terror, such desperate pleading that I immediately knew these two had never met each other and that the Terezi was just absolutely insane My jaw was hung open, watching this teenage girl slather this poor lad in her saliva, black lipstick and paint. I ran from that situation so fast that I’m pretty sure a part of my innocence still resides in that spot to this day. I think often about that poor Dave I left. Whoever you are, I’m sorry for abandoning you bro

I binged Homestuck during the Gigapause, in about a week and a half. I'd spent a long time holding Homestuck and its fans in utter disdain until I read it. I completely understood what the hysteria was about; the story/universe(s) are insane and staggeringly imaginative, and though there are parts that are extremely difficult to chew through, it's a story with heart, and (in my opinion) an uncanny understanding of the way I used to behave and think during my uncertain teenage years. Waiting for that Gigapause to finish and visiting the page only to see the same old shop ads for the plushies was absolute torture. People who turn their nose up at Homestuck simply don't know what they're missing out on. But yeah, the fandom is.. weird.

Actually, according to this fourm post that I'm quoting, "Assuming you spent a measly 5 seconds to look at the pretty pictures, Homestuck has 14,913 panels. You'd spend 74,565 seconds looking at them. That's about 1242.75 minutes, or 20.7125 hours. This brings the total of how long it'd take to read Homestuck up to 3.872 days." so, RPG had the chance to read it in a measly 3 days. Of course that's not taking into account sleep, eating, and school/work. But still, you can read it and become well educated on all the events in the comic in only 3 days.

Ohhh I remember homestuck cosplayers very vividly. I’m a cosplayer myself and at a convention I met some homestuck cosplayers. I told them their cosplays looked great and asked them who they were cosplaying. They were super nice to me even complementing me on my own cosplay. I asked them about homestuck and what it was since I had no idea what homestuck was at the time. They were explaining it to me when out of nowhere this troll cosplaying kid who was entirely unrelated to the people I was talking too or the conversation in general appears. He just starts shouting at me about how I’m an uncultured swine for not knowing what homestuck is and how it’s the greatest thing in the world. I quickly made an escape. Luckily I met the cosplayers later and they told me the kid was unrelated to them and that they’re very sorry for his behavior. I told them it was fine, and that I understand that every fandom has those people. But I was on edge for the rest of the day because I was kinda dreading running into that kid again. Luckily I didn’t.

Last year for Halloween, I was at work, and on my lunch went to Taco Bell to pick up food. The girl at the window was unquestionably, unmistakably dressed as a troll and I was absolutely dead in the middle of re-re-rereading the whole comic to finally finish it when it ended. I was blown away at the costume - which was actually quite good - and had no idea how to express everything I needed to to the girl in the window while she handed me tacos. I managed an awkward "nice costume" and went back to work, head spinning.

At the one comic con I went to, there was an army booth, and they had a tank, so naturally everyone wanted to take a picture on it, a group of people cosplaying as trolls, stayed on there for about ten minutes before anyone said anything. The one soldier there complemented the one on their costume but admitted he didn’t know where it was from and then the cosplayer went off on him, and honestly, I felt bad for him.

I had a horrible experience with a Homestuck fan last year at my home city's comic con. I was dressed as Gamzee and I had a pretty convincing cosplay with my face contoured to a male shape and my womanly features if you will bound up and hidden well. And this one cosplayer totally didn't know that I was a girl at first and was making very uncomfortable comments about my costume and calling me daddy and shit, it was not fun. Even after telling her that I was a girl, engaged to the guy in drag standing next to me, and didn't swing that way, she would not stop. She ended up touching me in very inappropriate ways after my fiance left when his mom called, and it got to a point where I was so upset and so embarrassed that I just left the con early and went home. I had a great day the day before and everyone I met was super nice, but that girl on Saturday gave me a glimpse of the fandom's absolute darkest side, and I knew I wanted no part of it. I do my best to avoid it altogether.

Listening to this, I'm surprised that I missed ALL OF THAT. I only heard of homestuck until I got into undertale, and wanted to know the origin of megalovania, and then once I got into the fandom, it was a husk of its formal self, joining when it ended. It's sad honestly, I feel as if I stumbled across a vault, and reading all the logs and journals of a once bustling civilization that went into chaos.

I joined a bit before undertale (looked up megalovania and expected Vriska but saw skeleton and that’s how I found out about undertale) and I honestly liked the tranquility of the fandom. While it’s smaller and harder to find fans, once you find them it’s pretty great. And I always tell people this when they think it’s dead “no it’s not dead, its just a gremlin under the bridge. It comes out and hangs out if you call for it or offer something to it but otherwise you never really notice it’s there.” And that’s what the fandom is really. Undercover. There are more than what it seems out there (not as big as it used to but still there) you just need to mention it to folks. Like we have these “codes” they aren’t official but they are definitely “you would only know it if you were in the fandom” type of things. I was signing up for a rewards membership at my Office Depot. When I told him my email ( had 413 in it) he paused. “Does... that number mean something?” “Yep!” “...... is it a Homestuck reference?” “Yes...” “MAN I REMEMBER HOMESTUCK I MISS IT.” Like neither of us radiate Homestuck vibes but that one number gave it away. I say all of this to say that while yeah it’s pretty dormant it’s by no means completely dead. And there are people out there. They are just “undercover” as it will. :3

Real talk. You could FEEL that Hussie was growing tired of both his work and parts of his fandom, especially when he shut down the forums, but it can also be seen expressed in the series itself. This man created something which he both hated and loved deeply - and for the story this wasn't a bad thing. In my opinion, the main villian of the series - without spoilering - is a representation of his past and present frustrations, especially because how the in-comic Hussie interacts with him. In my opinion this only added to a character which would arguably otherwise have been a very uninspired arctype of a villian. But my point is: The man has given us all he could. Let it end. And I say that as someone who has read through the entire thing three times. Hiveswap Act 1 wasn't BAD, but to me the magic wasn't there anymore. Possibly because magic is fake as fuck in the first place, who knows.
@seisoch69695 жыл бұрын
hiveswap and the friendsims have all the magic that homestuck had in his early days when everything was innocent and playful. I mean we all already went through homestuck's carnage so we are not impressed by some death, so you have the option to kill a bunch of stuff in the friendsim (or get killed) but its still in a funny manner, Hussie's humor is what homestuck lost in the end and it was just a Train of Feels trying to reach his destination and it eventually did. it's just something that a creator had to face at some point, especially if he only worked on one particular project/universe for a long time, and in a position where it is so popular they can't stop it or the fans will riot. we've seen it a lot already, one particular case that i remember was with "super meat boy" creator - that funnily enough create the binding of isaac to escape super meat boy, yet plunging himself to another one. heck, it happens a lot with manga series, when the author is basically want to end it yet the publisher won't allow it. or maybe just a youtuber who trying to create a new type of content because they're just tired of the type of content that they've been doing. sometimes you just want a blank space to start something new and fresh, just let it end for the creator's sake

Pretty sure my comment isn't going to see the light of day but story time. So this happened at a convention in Florida. I saw someone struggle to walk in a very elaborate cosplay. I don't remember what it was, because I didn't recognize it at the time. They ended up tripping over their own cosplay on the way down the stairs, and fell pretty bad. There was a group of homestuck cosplayers laughing at the bottom saying "I warned you about them stairs bro" which is a quote from a spin off or something attached to homestuck. Meanwhile, I'm trying to rush over and help this person but I was so mad I couldn't think. Thankfully the cosplayer was okay, and so was their costume. They weren't concerned, they didn't help -- they just laughed??? I'm still upset over it 5-6 years later.

Well a comment here did explain that if you only took 5 seconds for the pretty pictures, its actually possible to read the entire Homestuck story in about 3 and 4/5 days considering you only read and not do something else like sleep. So reading it all in seven days means the man literaly wasted a good portion of a week on just reading the whole thing.

For a long time there was a fandom joke about "the Homestuck anime"/ "my favorite anime is Homestuck" , because so many people were first introduced to the series through anime-style fanart and/or general anime fandom spaces - leading them to believe that Homestuck must be some weird anime. It became such a joke that people would make fake anime screenshots or even animate entire anime openings/endings. So believe me when I say you are far from being alone.

I suggest you do the Pokemon fandom. It has a youngish fanbase leading to cosplayers and community members that are loud and obnoxious. I went to a local con when Pokemon go was at its peak. A group of Pokemon trainer cosplayers went around shouting obscene Pokemon jokes and harassing Pokemon cosplayers. Most notably one of the older cosplayers ( around age 15) went up to a young child in a Pikachu hoodie and screeched ‘I choose you Pikachu!’ It startled the young child and they started to cry. Most people in that situation would apologise profusely and comfort the child. What does this scumbag do? Laugh and jeer at this small child. I don’t know what happened after that as My attention was diverted to something else. ( by ‘young child’ I mean this kid was around 8 or 9)

I used to despise Homestuck, simply because of the fandom. What I'd heard, and seen, made me want nothing to do with it. But, as i watched fan animation videos of different fandom, HS vids just kept popping up. And, some of them were just so brilliant, they made me curious. I didn't much enjoy the first act. Or even the second. But, You Can't Fight the Homestuck. I wondered if it got better, as some of the videos assured me. And, it did. I became a massive Homestuck. And even today would consider myself one. I didn't contribute to the fandom, but, read each panel of the webcomic, watched loads of videos, bought merch, etc. I still love the comic. I wish I'd gotten into it sooner. But, at the end of the day, I'm simply glad I gave it the chance it deserved.

One big reason that people hate the Homestuck fandom is because of the undeserved praise it gets. My definition of that is that when the series is looked at from a critical perspective and compared to other contemporary works you find that despite it being praised as "Deep, thoughtful, and insightful" it doesn't actually meet those descriptions compared to works that actually do. "Insightful" is reserved for works that either posit or demonstrate subjects that are complex by breaking it down into easy to digest segments that stretch out over time in order to deliver...uh...insight, into the topic. The only topic Homestuck is "insightful" in is Homestuck. Therefore, it's disqualified from that type of praise. If you'd like me to break down the rest of these points later, I will, but for now I'm going to cut off here.

Homestuck was my blue balls fandom: I was deeply invested with no one to talk with about it and I started reading right as the Great Hiatus started (circa 2013). I wasn’t on Tumblr, so I never saw the worst of the fandom, but I’m able to understand the depth of emotion and absolute bullshitery this story is able to upend in people. The constant struggle of being completely engulfed in something, but knowing it’s nigh impossible to sell an outsider without sounding like an insane person. On the plus side I did learn to draw doing fanart for this comic, so it wasn’t all for naught.

i'd go so far as to call homestuck as a post modern religion. it has deeply interconnected themes and symbolism and events, special terms and definitions pertaining to itself, revered personalities that go on to shape countless characters following them, acolytes that practice its teachings as accurately as possible (public bucket spitting), and encapsulates the entirety of its reality. no wonder it was so big. if things went smoothly the papal throne could've had grey smudges o it too.
@cactusc95194 жыл бұрын
yeah, idk if i would quite go that far, but definitely. it helps that it has a lot of actual interesting christian themes, and some from other religions. sometimes it seems to me to be one of the most effective translations of the bible, at least in terms of really portraying the early pre-constantine church in modern terms. think it actually manages to capture how interesting but basically unsettling and awkward it was back then.

If I were to compare Homestuck to Doctor Who, Act 1 of Homestuck would be like the original black and white run of Doctor Who leading up to the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker)'s role, except that everything preceding it is actually necessary to understand the plot so EVERYONE needs to read it to know what's happening later. That being said, I think I'm in the minority of people who actually really enjoyed Act 1 and the following bits of Homestuck from even before the trolls were introduced. I don't think Homestuck is a bad fandom, it was just more popular with teenagers, and teenagers sometimes go a bit too far with their fandoms in general. That's why Twilight has a reputation as having a bad fandom. It's not even teens' fault entirely they behave this way, it's because their pre-frontal cortex isn't fully developed and they lack impulse control as a result. I would stay up all night playing computer games or watching anime as a kid, no self-control. So if someone was watching the way I would talk about anime and video games, I would have seemed like a toxic fan. When you get older you gain the ability to self-regulate better.

This video just made me so nostalgic. I joined the fandom pretty much at the end of the peak and I've been chasing that high ever since. Never again have I found a fandom with such a prolific music and voice community. There are some remnants of it here and there, and there's been a bit of a resurgence what with the friendsims, but I will forever be kicking myself for joining the homestuck singing and VA community just a tiny bit too late. Writing homestuck fanmusic is what got me into college, singing broadwaystuck parodies and PhemieC covers is what has developed my voice to where it is today, and even years after it's ended the comic is still giving me creative inspiration (eg: the 95 page 2 act live staged musical about the ancestors that I've been writing bit by bit for the past year and a half). I know the fans from six years ago have left a bad taste in many peoples' mouths, but I'm just glad there's still some people out there that can appreciate homestuck for the work of art and cultural influence that it is.

@articulatelyComposed5 жыл бұрын
@@katnerddd6223 Oh wow, I didn't think anyone would see this! My ancestor musical (titled Time's Apprentice, I have a growing playlist of demos on my channel) basically goes through the most important aspects of the ancestor timeline from the perspective of the handmaid. I've modified much of the plot and character names to appeal to a non-homestuck audience, so essentially Damara is the servant to the god of time (doc scratch) and is tasked to go down to earth and do his bidding messing with people's lives. The first act follows the Signless' revolution and the second follows Mindfang's journey. Damara starts out as more of a narrator, constantly breaking the fourth wall to talk to the audience, but as the story goes on she becomes very attached to the characters she's manipulating, particularly Rosa (the Dolorosa), who becomes her only real parental figure and helps her realize the abuse she's been facing from the time god her entire life. The story, in a nutshell, is about abuse, oppression, and failed revolution. It's going to be a complete and utter tragedy and I can't wait to perform it live so I can see the audience weep when the final number comes around.
