He was a Consul of LoL! Love the Romans of Renown series. Particularly when you cover those of lesser political talents (to put it mildly). Hope you one day cover my boi Gaius Memmius, rich patron of the arts, philanderer extraordinaire, husband to a loose celebrity wife and by all accounts pretty much the Metellus Scipio of political and legal manoeuvering......

You said a tribune vetoed the judicial proceedings against hybrida. If they could do that easily, and given caesar as a populares had a lot of support among the plebs, why was caesar afraid of prosecution after his term expired?

If he was just a bit less of an alcoholic, Hybrida might have been able to carve out a fairly decent political career considering he managed to stumble his way into a consulship even while incredibly drunk.

Lot of slander in this vid. What's your source? Suetonius? Cassius Dio?
@alanpennie5 ай бұрын
Presumably mostly our usual sources Caesar, Cicero, and Sallust. Quintilian's Institutio is mentioned in the video, and Dio has a few unflattering remarks. There are many even more scandalous charges against him which aren't mentioned in the video.
@alanpennie5 ай бұрын
@@citricdemon Probably the standard three (Caesar, Cicero, and Sallust) plus Quintilian and Dio. Maybe Plutarch.

I took too long to get to this video. I see you take Cicero at his word about the alleged Cataline conspiracy, but I think today there is no consensus the conspiracy was real, rather that it was fabricated or played up by Cicero. I would be interested in hearing you engage with Arthur Kahn's perspective on it.
