New Orleans is my go-to city. Been coming to NO for over 40 years. I am a HUGE foodie and there is no other city like NO or The French Quarter. You stopped at one of my favorite restaurants, The Gumbo Shop. It's pretty good, and I am an acquaintance of the GM, but I prefer Oceana. Cafe Du Monde is historical restaurant, but I prefer Cafe Beignet. Next trip, try Irene's or The Pelican Club for dinner.Head down to Magazine Street or Esplanade for other great restaurants.

While fried seafood poboys are definitely more well known, I actually used to live next door to Nola Poboy and always got the barbecue shrimp poboy. And it’s worth noting that barbecue shrimp in New Orleans is different that why most of the country might consider BBQ. It’s made with more of a buttery gravy. Also, one of the best poboys is the All That Jazz at Verti Marte, which isn’t fried seafood either.

I'm born and raised here and live right here in the Fr Quarter, the Gumbo shop has the WORST gumbo ever. It's thick like a stew!!!! Most natives never eat gumbo out, cause we all make the best at home ourselves, and dats da truth!!! I just ate a bowl of Chicken and Andouille gumbo that I made, Andouille from LaPlace Louisiana, the Andouille capital of the world!!! Wit a bowl of potato salad, I'm a "floater", that means I love my potato salad in da gumbo, me!!! First ya make a roux.........Mon Dieu, make yo teeth slap ya gums, Mais ya!!!!!😂🥰🇺🇸

1. Mark 7 40ish: Yes a PoBoy looks like what is called in other places a Sub (submarine Sandwich) or a Grinder. What makes PoBoys different is the bread. If the bread is not crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside (regardless of what it is called) it is NOT a New Orleans PoBoy. Even master PoBoy bread makers from NOLA who tried to make PoBoy bread in Baton Rouge (appx an hour NW or NOLA) could not do it. We call it French bread but you can't even get this anywhere in France. 2. Mark 9:39ish: Laveau is pronounced in French as La Voo (as in voodo). HOWEVER, other commonly accepted (at least since dueling was made illegal) NOLA pronunciations are La Vo (with a long O, as well as La Vore - rhymes with four). 3. Re: best gumbo in the whole city: EVERY place that serves food in NOLA serves the best in the whole city - just "axs 'em". 4. Some try to make Beignets outside of NOLA, but even if you use an authentic Beignets mix, it just doesn't compare; even though - Yes - it is basically the same as 'funnel cake. Some say it has something to do with humidity and air pressure (NOLA being below sea level). Also, at Cafe Du Monde the coffee is "coffee & chicory with warm milk" and is called Cafe au lait (pronounced O Lay). You can get the chicory coffee black or decaf or French roast without Chicory. A warning: the coffee in NOLA is generally dark French roast; it comes when you call (coffee at national chain restaurants generally excepted.) Mark 12:54: Étouffée translates "smothered" NOT stuffed. HOWEVER, you did pronounce New Orleans like a native.

Your reason on why Nola uses tombs is wrong and that is the typical assumption. However, the reason is actually for land conservation because land wasn’t abundant in early Nola history so by using tombs families could reuse the tomb forever and not require more and more land plots. They are still using the tombs on st luis cemetery to this day and some tombs have dozens of family members in them over a century. People can absolutely so buried in the ground in Nola and that’s typical now... research a bit more.. very interesting. Nola is so much more than food, I implore you to actually look into its history and culture... you will be blown away. There is no place like it in the states.
