I was that fat kid in school that never ran the mile. I’ve been obese my entire adult life. Now, I’m loving running! I lost quite a bit of weight recently and feel better. I’m still needing more progression and weight loss but who gives a s^%#. Run for the run my friends. Stop worrying so much about pace and seek joy.

You have to change the way you think about it. I would bet you that a lot of the people who are looking at you running are thinking to themselves "I want to be like her, I bet you she's in really good shape and feels great about herself and that's what I want". You are motivating people every time you exercise, whether it's strangers who see you, or your friends on whatever app you use. Don't be afraid to be that light for others.

My surgeon said it would take a year, and it did, I ran my first Ultra 50km within a year. I have my next one in May. Please never give up. I thought I would never run again. Peace.

Just remember that slow running/jogging is best and probably the most beneficial and WILL make you faster! It's far easier to get out on a super easy run than to try and go faster/further on every run! Lace up and go and slow the f*** down, even walk if you want, but always lace up and go!
@arrowknee7356
@arrowknee7356 2 жыл бұрын
This is really bad advice partially. If you are wanting to get faster you will once you pass the more new to running level, have to start doing something like hill sprints, interval training etc, otherwise your speed will start to stagnate quicker then many would think. Slow runs are also very important, but slow runs is not where you develop your speed, it is where you recover for short and slow runs, and where you build endurance for long and slow runs.

I have cerebral palsy and I have been running for ten years. It took years to make running a habit. I no longer race but I've done everything from 5K to 25K. Consistency is key. Going out four or five times a week and a combination of running and walking has benefited me the most. I don't dread it because the only goal I have set for myself is to get out the door. If you put too much pressure on yourself you're not only defeating yourself but taking the joy out of the experience.

I’ve struggled with my relationship with exercise since I was 10. I’m now 18, and I’ve finally found a way to do it that is sustainable; because of COVID and everything shutting down, I was suddenly training for no one else but myself. It was to make ME feel good, and it was on my own terms. Now when I run - which just happens often, I don’t have to be motivated because I now see myself as “a person who exercise” - I never track the time. I just step outside my door and see what the route ends up becoming. If it feels good, maybe I run a little longer. If not, I turn back. Train for yourself, and the motivation will star coming from the inside rather than from the outside!

This is actually a really good video, I don’t even run - I go to boarding school so I can’t run outside without seeing someone I know from my classes (not as a friend just acquaintances) and it makes people think you’re weird unless running is ‘your thing.’ But as for when I’m home... I’m moving to a new area so now after watching this I really want to try - especially after losing all my fitness over this UK lockdown, and my rowing club is still shut - this might be a good way to build up my fitness, and make me excited about developing a new skill and moving to a new area. :)

@@soilthestillborn4949 I would say just make sure you know the difference between 'feeling the burn' as opposed to being in actual physical pain, bottom line is listen to your body. Sorry I can't help more than that as it is largely down to the individual. I think more practically there are a few things I can suggest(mostly elaborating on what I said before) you can get insoles moulded specifically to your feet which goes a long way, stretching (warming up also) every day is just a must even if you are not running that particular day. The biggest one I would say is make sure the rest of your non running shoes are also giving you good support/cushioning also (for the love of Christ don't wear canvas shoes converse/vans are the devil for flat footedness).Technique!. Finally I would recommend getting your feet/legs looked at by a doctor mostly so you know what is specifically going on with your feet/legs. For frame of reference I am flat footed but have tight leg and back muscles as a result of this and was not aware the knock on effect my feet were having to the rest of my body till I went to the doctor. I hope that helps in some way and is not just mad ramblings! :)

I've watched quite a few vids on running, over 50. You have great attitude advice in this one. There is the old sayings, "run your own race" and that is important to remember every run. We have to "trick" our minds to stay constant. I was one of the few runners who warmed up a lot before starting. So for the days didn't feel motivated to run(almost everyday) I would tell myself I'll just go to the part and do warm-ups. Of course "showing up is 50% of success". So I would fined myself running my route a few minutes later.

Great advice! I've run 19 marathons over 35 years and never trained with a watch, run with a group or shared a stat on social media. I use the races as a motivator to get me to stay disciplined, but it's the solitude and being outdoors connecting mind and body where I find joy. Yes, getting there takes work, but any amount of running can bring some well-earned fatigue that is worth savoring.

No matter how slow and short, running is just fundamentally an unpleasant experience. Sweaty, boring, hurts knees, can’t breathe, feel tired throughout the whole run. I worked up from walking and running to 2,5km running which was a lot for me. It did not get any better or nicer even tho I was going steady and not pushing all the time. It didn’t even give me a rewarding feeling at the end. Absolutely sucks. Gave up on it, honestly I think it could damage my knees with my weight even tho I’m not massively obese, just overweight and tall. I don’t have enough self discipline and motivation to keep doing something so unpleasant for so long just for it to maybe get better maybe not. I do not see the point. I’ll much rather go to almost any group workout lesson.

@enenenergp I feel you. I tried to teach myself to enjoy running several times in my life and it never worked. I don’t even have those negative past experiences mentioned in the video and still kinda hate it. My main reason for learning was that it is such an available type of movement - requires basically no equipment and you can do it anywhere. But it just never worked for me. I’m currently at a point of accepting this and investing my time in type of movement that I love instead. For example, I’ve always liked hiking and it has became my passion over the years. Full day hike on a steep incline? Yes please. Little jog after work? Nope. Besides, calories burnt by running and by walking are not that much different.
@nirfz
@nirfz 3 жыл бұрын
Fully agree. While i am not really overweight, after a motorcycle accident 18 years ago, my knees don't want me to run or jump much. (50 meters of running =2 weeks of pain in the knees) Even before that, i had never liked running and the "good feeling" runners talk about i never got, no matter what i did. (I was a very active child, climbing anything, playing football/soccer with friends, spending half of the day on the bycicle...) Where i was able to reach that feeling was on a bycicle. Or after weight training. (Before last autmn when the gyms had to close which they still are here). Different people react better to different forms of movement. Some react better to running, others to cycling, rowing, swimming or hiking. And like Zuzana G. wrote: i too prefer hinking up a steep incline. And as far as i read, you do burn the same amount of calories in hinking and running at the same distance. With running you just do that in a shorter time.

@@taoist32 yup. Absolutely should be fun. That is why i run with a light ruck nowadays. I found that the runs i enjoyed the most were when my daughter was sitting on my shoulders. I have always been a slow runner, however, when I was in high school and middles school I could beat everyone resistance-wise (except the people who did athletics as a sport) but it was mostly due to my stubbornness and wanting to "push it". And so I always, always, always hated running. Now, with the pandemic, gyms closed and very few opportunities to go out, I'm finding it a good excuse to get some sunshine and take a break from dissertation writing. And I started slowly loving it! I'm by no means faster, and I don't go all the time as the Scottish weather is what it is. BUT, getting out of your own head and trying to associate running with something else other than a "punishment" or the thing you have to do because of gym class helps massively. Good luck to all beginners!

Yes.. definitely a love hate relationship with running sometimes.. having trouble finding my running mojo again as I’m experiencing my normal yo-yo fitness due to an injury brought on by training for events.. training well, getting fitter, get near event a niggle shows up just before,during or just after the event, and have to dial all the way down on my running again to nurse it.. all that fitness slips away, and I have to work through brining it back again for the next event instead of being able to ride that fitness level you’ve worked hard for.. is a real bummer. Currently nursing an ankle sprain/pain/ache who’s knows why at the moment.. running dialled all the way back. And it’s made worse last year with events being cancelled last minute.. fingers crossed for 2021.. Happy New Year running peeps 🥳

This is a very helpful video for someone like me who keeps burning out on running. A lot of the advice out there leads me to push my body too hard, if I take it to heart. The only way I stick to and enjoy running and avoid injury is if I forget about all the tips that aren't about form and run where I want to, as far as I want to, at the speed I want to, slowing down to a walk whenever I want to. "Should" is poison to my knees.

Much wisdom in this video. I have been in a running club for a couple of years and run at a comfortable pace. One day I decided to blast up a hill and get it over with, instead of my usual steady trot. One of our faster runners went past me and said "you should move up a group" (as we have people of mixed abilities in the club and used to run in different packs), but I declined. I'd rather run slower and be sociable than to be in a group where every run is a big stretch and I'm wondering if I'll make it to the end. I still feel like I'm improving my fitness at the slower end of my speed range.

Wow, that was unexpected. You hit the nail on the head so sharply that I was actually nearly brought to tears. You see, I'm quite a good cyclist. Of course I hadn't always been, quite the opposite. When I started cycling 9 years ago I was 350 pounds (I'm 190 now) and could barely ride 5 miles. The good thing back then though, was that I was unaware of all the apps and bike computers and I just had a very basic speedometer that told me speed and distance. I rode by myself, so there was nobody to compare myself to. That led to me being able to improve at my own pace with no judgement from anyone else but more importantly no self judgement. Fast forward to about six months ago and the wife wants to start doing some sprint triathlons. So now I need to start learning to run. The problem is, a lot of my cycling friends are also runners...really good runners. So they post their runs on Strava and, just like you said, I couldn't help but compare my times with theirs. HUGE mistake. I would go out and try to run too fast, blow myself up really quickly, and be left feeling like a total failure. It wasn't until I had an honest conversation with myself, downloaded a plan from Garmin for beginner runners, and decided to stick with it that I really started making progress. So yes, I'm still pretty slow compared to my friends, but I'm also able to run a 5k at a decent pace. Athletes tend to be pretty competitive people, and if you get caught up in that, you can do yourself more harm than good. While there are positives about being motivated by others, you have to remember that beating yourself up because you're not as fast as someone else is not the point of exercise. As you say, fresh air, sunshine, and of course the benefits of being healthy are what should matter most. And if you're going to compete with someone, compete with yourself. Thank you so much for this video and I hope you're having an awesome day.

I’ve always loved running. I used to run 5kuntil sustaining an injury while playing hockey. Unfortunately, I pushed through it for years, and now I’m at the point where I can hardly walk around school and I’m going for surgery... I’m only 14. Pushing it is good, but listen to your body. If it is tiring, great! If it really hurts stop. Don’t make the same mistake as me 💀

I agree with a lot of what you are saying, mainly focus on your self no others. My sons ran cross country so I found myself choosing to run the various local cross country courses, which made it more challenging, and honestly impossible to compare to other people's times. Unless you count 16 to 18-year-old kids who should be running me into the ground. An added advantage is it's less pounding on the body, and you are not going in circles in the same run. Western PA hills can be a challenge, but as long as you are moving is all that matters.

I had lower back disc injury which resulted in some residual drop foot on my left side which is still there ten years after the injury (bulge from parachute landings improperly in the army, then blew discs out doing a good morning lift with heavy dumbbells in 2010). I don’t run nearly as fast as I used to but I still run. You can do it, start by walking, take your time and it will come. Movement is great for your back as well

One of my problems is that I want to go running but I'm in such bad shape that I need to start by walking for awhile but I find walking so boring. I hate knowing that I will need to just walk for so long before I will be able to really run so that has been stopping me from getting started.

I have never gotten that runners high. More than not I don't enjoy my runs. I still stick with it, 15-20 miles every week, because I love the feeling afterward, and my body feels so much stronger. I also have less aches and pains and weigh 20 lbs less than I did when I started running 5 years ago. I know how much it benefits my health so I just do it.

2:12 That's a really awesome tip. I always have this mentality that i have to run till i can't anymore and have to progress all the time. Maybe that's why i can't sustain running longterm and always give up after a time.

Thanks for the post Holly - inspiring as always! I started running again back in April of this year just to have something to do while my work was shut down due to COVID. So I had the intention that if I could just be able to run 3 miles that would be great. Now I’m averaging 15 to 18 miles a week! Question: at 2:16, what kind of watch is that? Thanks again and Happy New Year!

I love your philosophy ! People are so obsessed by their stats and performance, it's annoying ! The goal should be to do something that makes you feel good. Do your best and push yourself YES, but that does NOT mean you have to beat yourself up if you don't outperform yourself (or others!) on every single run !

I want to add something to this: I picked up running again this year, and the first half a year I kept getting injuries. My solution, I took my shoes off and started running without them. I now have been running for 6 months without a single running injurie and I am enjoying every mile.

I don’t think I ever thought of giving up running. If I didn’t have a good run then I would look towards my health and start a diet plan. If you want to have a strong run then you have to be strong within.

Great Advice! Thank you! 💝 (I’m a beginner) I’m now running 2.5 miles almost everyday instead of demanding myself to run 5miles several times a week. And-I walk to warm up first, coupled with intermittent recovery fast paced walks if I’m running at a higher speed snd feel out of breath. I’m loving running more when I give myself a break away from my inner critic! 🤓thank you for your motivation!
