Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 Review: New OpenRun Pro gets bigger sound, battery and better charging

Less vibration = Bone conduction reduction I picked up my Openrun Pro 2 a week ago. I currently have the Aftershokz Aeropex. The Openrun pro2 has more bass but, I like the "in my head" bone conduction sound when making calls on the original, Aeropex better. With loud ambient noise, I find it harder to hear with the new one. If I place my fingers in my ear canals or use foam ear plugs, the sound increases a lot on the aeropex. On the new model, the sound is reduced a lot. I believe the addition of the air speaker is the problem. Maybe the problem of the bone conduction driver is: 1 The placement on the new headset is not as close to your skin 2 It is smaller to make room for the other driver. 3 Or, it is not energized as much to increase the battery play time of all four drivers (it is my understanding there are 2 per side) I am obviously speculating. However, the new one is better to listen to music in a quieter ambient environment. Hopefully, this may be a software controlled remedy..ie reduce/increase the volume of individual speakers. I know I will receive comments Such as..these were designed to hear your surroundings or buy an in ear set for loud noises. I have a previous bone conduction that works great in loud environment. These are reduced volume compromise of the open air and the original bone conduction models. Also...I allowed someone with loss hearing/needs hearing aids try the new pro 2. He stated the volume was too low. He has the openrun pro and can hear well with them.

I was actually going to ask about the difference between the two. I couldn't find much reviews or videos at all comparing the two. Probably because you can't really pick up the Aeropex anymore. Unfortunately, the power/+ button on mine isn't really working anymore and I've been looking at options of either repairing it to get it to work better again or getting a new pair. It's a shame though, because the Aeropex was still lasting all day. Just the button to turn it on isn't lasting.

wow. I was gonna change from Openrun Pro to Pro2 until I read your comment. That's what I thought about less vibration on many reviews. I have hearing loss so I've been using Openrun pro for my daily life including making phone call and exercising. Thanks for your comment. I'll continue using Openrun Pro ^^

I loved my openrun pro's but moved over to the oladance air conduction headphones and never looked back. For me they give you almost as good situation awareness but with much better sound and comfort. Still use my openruns every now and again as I have them

FYI Shokz has a competing product to oladance - called openfit. Both are very similar technology and both have great sound quality (I own both and use both).

I actually like the magnetic charge cable in the previous gen. Very easy to just put it up to the headset and it magnetically attaches. Very simple. That convenience is worth the incovenience of not having a standard charge cable to me. I have so many of these over the years that by now I have 2 cables. I leave one at work and one at home mainly. I really don't like the whole flap thing to reveal a USB charge port. That is seen in lots of other manufacturers productions and just doesn't seem as nice to me. The ealier versions of the Aftershokz headsets were like that and I thought the magnetic connection is a better solution. I do realize that my opinion on that is likely not the majority opinion on it though. It is convenient to use a standard USB-C port for when you forgot your charger on a longer trip, but some planning ahead or just buying a spare charge cable to place in your car for an emergency can help with forgetfulness. I can get over that if the sound is even better with the pro 2. Looking forward to getting some.

@@corentinm5169 Yea, I forgot about that (being in the US). I have mixed feelings about that. Great for the consumer in some ways (standardization). I really didn't like what apple did with their lightning connector requiring MFI stuff for example. At the same time though it might not be great in other ways for whatever the next method that could become a standard years from now that might not ever happen because of regulation forcing older USB-C stuff (I assume 10 years from now USB-C will likely could be old stuff).

I agree - the charging port cap is another point of failure for water ingress. Amazon sells Shokz mag plug to USB-C dongles - I keep one handy in my travel kit to be able to charge without an extra cable.

I just got mine today (ordered with next day expedited shipping). There is a noticeable improvement in sound quality over the previous pro version to me. Less muddy as in highs are clearer and lows are better too. I haven't tested the microphone yet (which is really important) but the mixing of the 2 techs (bone and air) seems to be a winning combination. Less buzzing at high volumes too, but I rarely use high volumes for my use case and the pro was fine to me in that area, but it is nice to have less vibrations with the air being used more for bass. I am glad to see this new model. Worth the upgrade to me for sure. I can get over not having the magnetic cable, but I still prefer that for ease of connection for charging.

How well has that protective flap been staying in? I noticed before I traded mine back for the Aerofit 2, that flap would feel like it's about to open by itself. I'm having 2nd thoughts as these do stay on my head much better than the Aerofit 2 have.

I have the original open runs, which I love but I have to say my largest use case is listening to podcasts and music as I fall asleep because there’s nothing inside my ears. I’m side sleeper and most curious about the new model is how much bleed is there so I don’t wake up my spouse while listening topodcasts or audiobooks as I sleep

@timboyer8783 On the fence a bit. Considering putting my Pros on eBay at a high ish (maybe £80) starting. If they get some action and sold at £80+ I'll then buy the new ones. If not maybe stick with what I have. The upgrades look good but they're quite marginal on the current model. USB C and two hours extra being the main ones it seems.

I'm a bit of a sweater and I've killed a couple of IP rated in ear type earphones - will these be ok do you think?

IP55 should handle sweat just fine but I have seen posts by people who had issues with the headphones after a year and thought it was due to sweat affecting the electronics. Besides, water resistance degrades over time so a degraded IP55 isn't that great. The IP67 OpenRun are a much better choice if you want the piece of mind. If the OpenRun Pro 2 were IP67, I would have pulled the trigger but IP55 is not an option for me.

My openrun pro's have been disappointing with regards to moisture durability. I had a pair die on me, and the second is already blinking due to moisture intrusion, despite not getting wet per se. I live in Florida and it's just insanely humid and there's a lot of sweat of course, but I thought they were meant to handle these sorts of conditions. Maybe the 2s are better?

@@shipleyag Agree about the service. They sent me a new pair despite the fact that my purchase evidence was a somewhat sketchy screenshot of my purchase rather than a proper receipt. Unfortunately I've had them two weeks and they are already blinking for water damage again. The stopped blinking and got me through a run this morning, but I could only control them with my phone as none of the buttons worked.

With bone conduction, sound leakage is pretty low. Unless, you're really cranking it up to max volume. Air conduction is the one where sound leaks a lot, even on medium volume, particularly in quiet environments.

It's a shame the pro 2 are still IP55 like the pro. I'll stick w8th my openrun mini, as I've heard horror stories of openrun pro dying after use in the rain or when sweating (how dare you sweat on a run!)

Yea, the magnetic charger was so much more convenient in my opinion. Just stick it on and it'll charge. Little bummed I'll have to deal with a rubber flap that'll inevitably fail on me one day.

My Only Issue With The OpenRun Pro 2 Is The Material Shokz Makes Them From Breaks My Skin Out Which Never Happened/Happens With OpenRun Pro ....I Cut Out Some Thin Material To Place Over The Offending Areas Of Pro 2 ....If This Doesn't Fit The Skin Irritation Issue I'll Have To Return Them

USB C is actually very nice because, 1) it can fast charge faster than USB A, 2) USB is ubiquitous.... Assuming it's not USB C 5v.... That crap is dumb and used by so many cheap devices that require a USB A to USB C cable.

.... I recieved my pro 2 Friday and wow what an upgrade in sound quality in the Bass Mids & Highs Over the Pro ... .... No Vibrations Have I Felt ....The Pro 2 Sound Is Close To That Of The OpenFit But With Almost Twice The Battery Life ....
