Thanks for sharing your tips! I also can recommend to do a guided nightdrive in a truck. Lot of the big cats are more active during the night. Og some other animals of course.

I have just spent two days in Kruger National Park. My sightings were two herds of elephants, giraffe, zebra, antelope, Impala, waterbuck, baboons, hippos, warthogs, crocodile and gazelle. The elephants were simply stunning. What struck me was how healthy the animals looked with shiny coats. I think this is because they eat their ideal diet. I also saw large lizard and more birds than I can remember the names of. I did go on to the dirt back roads and saw more than on the sealed roads. In places the undergrowth was so thick it was hard to see the animals but when the shrubbery thinned out or there was a clearing then I usually saw something of interest. I am not sure if ants count as game but there were many huge anthills. Drive very slowly and the corrugations and ruts are not so bad. I bought an excellent map and also the guide book with pictures of all the animals so you can tell a waterbuck from an impala. I also visited the archeological site not far from the Phalaborwa Gate where there is an ancient iron smelter. The site attendant did walking tours and it was fascinating.

Ok, i am from germany and therefore not so many times in the park than many others herein, but i have four visits on my list at least. My experience is, that the dirt roads did not give so much rewards, only in a few cases. So i stick to the tar roads mainly, since they normally follow the water and we had always great sightings there plus several specific dirt roads. I really like the latest sightings App, since it is a kind of swarm intelligence and led us to some great sightings , the downside is, that all the open safari vehicle drivers seem to use it too, means after you set a ting, literally dozens of them arrive within a few minutes and block the whole sighting. We experienced most of them as very rude against (smaller) private cars. So think in advance at which point you Do so, i recommend after enjoying the sighting enough. Talk to others is still one of the best tips in my option, and additionally from my side, the more north you are, the better this works - maybe because there are less people on the road and other people are then more open to share their sightings. I can understand that sometimes, when you are asked the 100st time what you are seeing/looking for, but in all other cases not. Unfortunately, the north never performed very good in sightings... My best tip is to learn as much about the geometry and behaviour of your (rental car) as you can in advance, because your abilities to steer that thing are most important on crowded sightings and sometimes gamechanging...and try to foresee what happens next....

Yep I concur, the cats are spotted more often on tar roads just due to the shere volume of cars. They are bound to catch the nearby predators that are lounging near the roads. It is a choice to take the roads less travelled and feel the peace of bush when you are on a desolate sand road.

Have spent four days driving through Kruger. Going out early, late, middle of the day, following others, driving alone, going really slowly or a little bit faster, tarred roads or dirt tracks. It makes no difference. The fact is that the density of wildlife is much lower than in east African parks. Sure we have had sightings in the four days. We could just make out the head of a lioness at 100m and a sleeping leopard (hidden in the grass) at 80m and a cheetah sighting which as good but it was damned hard work. Oh yes we saw two hyena too. What I miss are the smaller animals and the birds (basically none of the former and few of the latter). We have a Wild Pass so we will try again going further north. Based on what we have seen I'd recommend skip Kruger and go to Kenya or Uganda instead if you want to see wildlife. I am sure this video is made in good faith but like others it paints a false picture of the game viewing experience IMO.

Great info, very comprehensive and well presented. Great Job !!! Thank You Villiers !!! I want to surprise my wife on her birthday with a trip to South-Africa : Kruger park and Cape town. QUESTION : when is the best time to visit the Kruger park in Your opinoin ? There seems to be a lot of recomendations for the dry season May to Aug motivated by : less crowds, less mosquitos, less rain, easier to see the wildlife because of less vegetation. How ever there are some conflicting recomendations claiming that November is the best month ???? (More comfortable temparatures, possibillities to see animal cubs, Greener but still quite open and not yet densed vegetation.) What is Your exerience ? Thanks for a great video ! Best Regards ! Per Thank You very much Villiers.

Hi Per, sorry for only getting back to you now. My favourite time in Kruger is April/May when it's still relatively green, but not as hot as before that or as cold as directly after that. November can be brutally hot and very wet if the rains come early. Game viewing-wise, August to October is arguably the best, but the veld is very dull and dry during those months. December to March is lush and colourful, but it can be VERY hot and wet. I hope that helps.

Yes there are 2 resident leopards near the tar road north and south of Shingwedzi. Both of them are close (as in a few km's) to the causeway in to the main camp. However the last time I saw them was quite a few years ago.
