Really sorry for the guy who feels like he has nothing to look forward to in life. I think everyone would deserve to truly love something and be loved back: be it your father, very dear friends, lover, etc. But many of us have trouble really finding people that we can share a mutual understanding deep enough to have a truly fulfilling love with. A lot of people love their parents, friends, but not in that truly fulfilling satisfying way. You realise you were alone when by a very incredible luck you find someone your heart is truly able to unconditionally love and be happy whenever they are around. I think a lot of us live this slightly miserable life where our relationships are not fulfilling enough. I think it is normal to pity your own self when this happens: we all deserve better than that. I do not think it is self centered to admit that you lack of something that would allow you to fully develop yourself - true love is like a sun under which we all would love to bloom. So don't feel guilty to regret you are not blooming with friends and love. However, just because you are not in bloom does not mean you cannot be a strong useful and beautiful tree. So I suppose the answer is to just accept you are not under the light conditions to bloom as you would wish to, but also to not loose your appreciation for the fact you can still grow in the conditions you have, with courage, and also keep a hope that you never know, maybe things will change, maybe there is something you can do and one day you will realise you are actually full of flowers.

I was 13 the first time I thought of suicide and not without reason. My home life and school life were so bad idk which was worse. I attempted suicide at 19, i swallowed a bottle of pills and drew a hot bath but as I sat there i just couldn't follow through with it. I want to live, I'm just tired of my miserable life. Now I realize you can kill yourself at any time but it's so final and I want to see what tomorrow has in store. Sometimes I live years just to see a new movie I couldn't miss. Life does seem lonely and hopelss if you put all your problems in a pile and wallow in what you dont have. It really is the little things like the green of spring and the colors of the sunset that make life worth living for me and I take comfort in meeting people who are similarly hopeless. I would never want anyone to feel this way but knowing there are others out there makes me feel less alone.

There's never the perfect thing to say to a person who is depressed. The hardest part about depression is that you're brain isn't being logical. Your emotion is in control and it's nearly impossible to make an injured heart understand or take in new information. Distraction has always worked for me, but a lot of people get so down (like you said maybe obsessed) that they often cling to things that affirm that feeling; sad songs, a dark room, negative news, a rainy day, whatever. I do the opposite - The happiest song in the world is ELO's 'Mr. Blue Sky' and I swear by it, that listening to this song will make you feel better. I also force myself to smile in the mirror, and hold that smile for a good minute. I heard it gets the endorphins sparking like a car engine that's sat in the cold all winter. You gotta warm up your brain LOL. But when you're really really sad it's so hard to motivate yourself to do anything and so I created these easy routines to follow.

I feel for the Caller that said he has no purpose. I also feel that way and I am MARRIED and have a job and friends, I rarely see but somehow I still feel lonely and my job is so unfulfilling. The only thing that sometimes gets me through the day is my DOG! Maybe he can get a cat or a dog, if he likes animals OR volunteer at the local shelter because animals give unconditional love. Volunteer anywhere !!! Many Many seniors need help with groceries or rides to the doctor or pick up meds and so on and they are so thankful. I hope he finds something because there are a lot of people that feel the same especially now we are all trying to cope in this new normal.

Yes!! I know exactly how he felt. I've said those exact same things before. One night, it was just one of those nights. I awoke to ambulence rushing me into the ER. 2 months later my dog had babies from one of the neighborhood dogs lol. She was pretty popular lol. At any rate I look at dogs and couldn't imagine leaving them. It breaks my heart right now thinking how they would feel if I wasn't there for them. I would never do that to them and they're (as cliche as it sounds) my reason for living. It was a true blessing from the Universe.

❤️I honestly feel exactly the same as the man who called in with the "Existential dilemma", so much so, I thought maybe one of my calls to your hotline had gotten through & for show purposes you had it edited & voiced for the podcast...I realize that wasn't the case and it was real & that I guess I'm not the only guy out here wanting to die, but too afraid to die...I loved your advice Sarah and especially the quote of your late mother: * " Sometimes just existing is the bravest thing we can do"* . ..I've barely been holding on for the past 6 months of this pandemic, the first 6 were a nightmare, but the past 6 a torturous lonely existential death scape... I won't tell that guy to "hold on", perhaps I would have years ago, but now I have an acute understanding/insight into how dark life can get & especially how cruel our society has become. Many of us out here have tried everything that we have access to, not sure if this man is also living on the margins, with little access to help, but I've been on/off homeless for nearly 3 years & the pandemic has taken away a ton of already EXTREMELY limited resources. I just turned 46 this past week & it is my 16th year with highly stigmatized chronic illness, MECFS(aka chronic fatigue syndrome), Fibromyalgia, kidney disease, & severe chronic pain...poor health has left me estranged from family, abandoned by all my friends, & pushed into the very margins of society...this is our culture, this is how we take care of the ill(mentally or physically) in the USA. I feel so much for the caller & I'm also grateful I heard his call & you were brave enough to air it. I think the human element, the love, the lack of connection is the hardest part for people who are contemplating death...I know it is for me. The great void of loneliness is the absolute most painful aspect of my life, greater than any physical pain I have as symptoms of my diseases. I Love have you spread *COMPASSION* Sarah & without the "Toxic positivity" BS that is often spewed about like advice BUKAKE. Most of us simply want to be heard or listened to, being hugged/loved and cared for would also lessen suffering, but most will take just a friend to listen. Sending love to that man, if he happens to read this, reach out to me...a fellow man who "gets it". Thanks for all you do Sarah "the true mensch" Silverman :)P.S. anyone curious about MECFS, just do a google of "MECFS & Long covid", not to scare folks, but upwards of 10% of people will end up with Post Viral syndrome nearly identical to MECFS from getting Covid, so, death isn't the only reason people should avoid Covid...NOBODY wants to live the hell that is "long covid or MECFS", trust me and the #millionsmissing ❤️

But you mention you're "liberal as fuck", and then you say you align with the democratic socialists. Those two things are diametrically opposed to one another. I feel the same way Sarah feels about not wanting to belong to a specific party any more.. I think alot of us GenX'rs feel like this tbh ..and others as well . I'm glad someone else feels the same way as me . Everything she said is how I feel about it too, but people act like you're weird if u don't attach yourself totally and completely to one party or the other..Lol 🤪 but that's the annoying world we live in right now Lol

Don’t be surprised when people across the aisle take your critique of people with similar political leanings as you as a means to find common ground.

One should align themselves with what's good and promotes unity and prosperity. Prosperity let's people forget about their roots and join the human race at a more social level. If your alignment is with those that stifle and restrain the economy then what good is that.If your alignment is anti-family pray tell what's the alternative. If you side with suppression instead of free speech then how many great ideas get lost? Which 'side' sounds more productive?

Organized religion and politics are a trap, everyone who is able to build their own opinions should make their own path. It’s fine to align yourself with one group and be an individual with conflicting opinions. I support common sense, equality and creativity. I use to think the world was binary, because as a kid it’s easier to understand things that way. As I get older I realize that life is too short to let others do the thinking for you. What if everybody is wrong? What if nobody has the answers/questions we need as a species to expand our reach into the unknown? I believe without evidence life has meaning, but it depends on the individual more than the consensus of any group. Maybe all the beauty of “unity” obscures the toxic side of it, maybe the future needs to be more decentralized so new concepts and innovation can exist.
