The classics you haven’t tried yet are kibbeling and herring for the fish snacks. And another real Dutch treat is appeltaart. When it comes to cities Utrecht is my favorite, just 40 minutes from Amsterdam. And for dinner I would recommend Indonesian or Surinaams. Because these are almost only available in the Netherlands and nowhere else in Europe. You find lots of Surinaams in Amsterdam and the best Indonesian restaurants can be found in Den Haag. Just don’t go for the chinees/indonesisch, but look for a real Indonesisch restaurant and order a rijsttafel. This will give you a lot of different tastes to try.

We Dutchies eat only the plain stroopwafels, as someone already said the stroopwafels with extra’s on them is just for tourists and we just buy them in the supermarket. The fries you had with mayonaise and peanut sauce is called ‘patatje oorlog’ in Dutch. The bitterbal is the small bal version of the kroket, with meat ragout (stew) and is eaten by most Dutchies with mustard. Due to the Indonasian influencers we have nasi- and bami-schijf. What was called the Dutch sausage is called a mini frikandel, some eat them with mayonaise, some with a mix of mayonaise and ketchup and some with raw unions too. The poffertjes, you called the Dutch pancakes are made from a different batter than the traditional pancakes, the traditional pancakes were made at home too in the old days. All these food items you can buy them in the supermarket too and fry them at home in a frying pan.

I spent 1999 to 2004 working in Amsterdam. The frites were always freshly cooked and lightly salted, I prefer malt vinegar on my fries/chips but in Amsterdam it tomato ketchup. Everywhere in The Netherlands & Belgium the Frites/fries were good. I always found the best Stroop Waffles on Albert Kuypmarkt, made fresh in front of you. The Febo food slot machines are where most seem to get their Bitterballen and similar snacks. If you watch them filling the slots you can get the freshest! I don't know what they said exactly, but what you had were not bitterballen, this was bitters garnish, there wasn't even a real bitterbal with it. The thing that was included that most resembled a bitterbal was the small croquette, that is with the type of regout filling. But this was a mini croquette because bitterballen are round. The rest were mini cheese soufle, mini frikadel, mini bami disc and a fried piece of chicken. I couldn't really see what the last one was, but it also looked like a kind of mini croquette to me, because it has different flavors. For example, you also have goulash croquettes and satay croquettes and even more flavors, they look the same from the outside, only the color may differ, but the filling is really different. Anyway, what you called bitterballs, there was no real bitterball, they are really round, that's why they are called balls. And the most common thing is to eat bitterballen with a little mustard.

@roxstar50885 ай бұрын
the fries sauce combi is called "Patatje oorlog" which roughly translates to "war fries." The peanut sauce called "Satay saus" originates from our colonial times when we occupied Indonesia. there is a lot of Indonesian and Suriname influences in our dishes. (like the deep fried noodle bar called a "bami schijf" later in the video.) The stroopwaffel is kinda a tourist trap. We get like packs in the supermarket of the smaller ones without any toppings for a fraction of the price. You did very well though to heat it up on a cup of coffee or tea to make the caramel softer. There is a thing people (used to) do after going out where they used to go to the FEBO (a fries shops) with a wall of little compartments filled with snacks. And start left or right top and make a diagonal line downwards taking one of each. The pronunciation of poffertjes was actually really good, almost there. I would suggest to eat our normal pancakes as well. they are huge and especially the bacon & cheese one with syrup is soo good. Other suggestions of these type of foods is kibbeling (deep fried cod chucks), Kapsalon (stable drunken food. Fries with kebab, sauce and melted cheese) and something not for everyone but I always do with foreigners I meet: Hollands nieuwe happen. It's a fish that you grab by the tail and eat it in a very traditional way. Beside all the deep fried street food, we also have way better "normal" food like snert (pea soup) in the winter and stews. Last suggestion: don't go to Amsterdam as it's a huge tourist trap. Utrecht, Den Bosch, Maastricht, Zwolle are all reasonable to large cities with much more character.

ha the fries coming with mayonaise, (satay) peanut sauce plus chopped onions is "patatje oorlog" (war fries), it probably refers to how the stomach may react to it having some sort of internal war as a result. The assorted tray with deep fried fingerfoods looked ok to me, personally I love what you call the Dutch sausage thing and the croquette even more! the sausage thingy is called frikandel. both do great with mustard! the small pancakes are delicious even more when you throw some grand marnier over it! You certainly will need to try dutch deep fried fish thingies like kibbeling, which is of cod and of course you'll need to have a herring! you really don't have to take onions or pickles with it, particularly when it's fresh new catch which is this year 22nd June.

Guys guys, about the stroopwafels: the double O in Dutch (“oo”) is not an English double o. Just say it like this: stroap-wahfel. Also, the best stroopwafels should NOT be bought in the tourist traps, but e.g. at the Albert Cuyp market (in the Albert Cuyp str). The regular size stroopwafel (the ones most Dutch people eat) are the small ones, with just some caramel syrup (which is called “stroop” in Dutch) in the middle and no topping. Toppings on stroopwafels is just for ignorant tourists who don’t mind paying 8 euro for a cookie. Have fun exploring our crowded little country.

Second comment as KZbin tends to nuke comments that get edited to much/often. 13:57 "the noodle one" That would be the great Noodley one in the sky... Ramen. Joking aside, what you got there is the "Bamibal". Bami originates in this case from Indonesia (although present in many Asian countries and the word originates from the Chinese word Ba (meat) and Mi (Noodles)). The main dish it is adapted from is called Bami Goreng (Goreng meaning fried) and has been very popular in the Netherlands for decades. This is of course a remnant from our colonial past. There is a rice version as well based on the dish Nasi Goreng (fried rice, Indonesian and Malay style) obviously called the "Nasibal" (also sold as puck shaped, then called Bamischijf or Nasischijf) 14:28 Of course we have a Cheese based snack (and honestly it is kind of weird we only have one actual cheese based snack). Usually filled with a mixture of Beemster, Gouda and Cheddar. A good Cheesesouffle is both delicious and dangerous. People eating it for the first time should beware that if it is fresh out of the fryer, the inside is molten hell. I am told Wisconsin is basically the Cheese state of America, is this correct or would youu say other States have better cheeses. 18:24 That is either a very small "Kroket"(croquette) or a very oddly shaped "Bitterbal". The difference between a kroket and a bitterbal? Shape... that's it. Kroket is "street/Snackbar" food, Bitterbal is "pubfood". I mean pubfood because it is literally in the name. A "Bitter" is a drink. Things like Jagermeister, Underberg, Asbach Uralt, etc. A Bitterbal therefor is a snack eaten while drinking a bitter. If you want to make Kroketten or Bitterballen at home in your deepfryer. Go to a Dutch supermarket (Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Plus, etc) and look for either the brands "Mora, Beckers or my personal recommendations (but sitghtly more expensive) Van Dobben or Kwekkeboom. 19:02 "The Dutch sausage"? Nah, that would be Rookworst. But a Frikandel (or mini frikandel in your case) makes for a decent second and might be the most popular snack food. Personally I find them very mid. People will tell you stories how they are filled with "the bad parts" like eyes and such... this is of course a myth in most cases. Perhaps some very cheap brands will do but the major brands like Mora or Beckers will use "nromal" meat products. As for the sauces... you did it "wrong" (honestly, there is no wrong, you do you... but for the sake of the argument). Mustard goes with Kroket/Bitterbal, Curry (I think that is curry sauce) goes with Frikandel. 21:17 Not a bad pronunciation of Poffertjes. :) Of course it sounded a bit shaky as you weren't sure but I give it a 9 out of 10. And yes, butter and sugar is the traditional way, but like with pancakes, it is ok to experiment. (unlike with the stroopwa... I shut up) Now, Amsterdam is of course a perfect city for a visit and I would advice every tourist to visit it at least once. But it IS adult Disneyland of course. (especially when it comes to pricing). If you want to experience a bit more authentic Dutch cities I would say Utrecht, Arnhem, Valkenburg, Maastricht... all excellent places with beautiful architecture, excellent food and great atmosphere. I hope to see you strolling around my city of Utrecht one day. (If I would happen to see you, coffee is on me)

OK I had to wait until you tasted all 🙂 You had mini versions of the most favorite Dutch snacks: Bamischijf, kaassoufle, vleeskroket, kipnugget, frikandel, kalfskroket 🙂 The bamischijf is based on the Indonesian dish Bami goreng ( Indonesian fried rice). 3:24 There is no general rule about feeding the ducks when it comes to the law. However as a general rule.. don't feed the ducks. Things like bread or fries are not good for them and you won't be the only one feeding them. It is like you sitting on a parkbench and every third passer by tosses you a donut. You know how to stop eating and be mindful if it's bad for you, a duck doesn't. 4:00 Ah a "Patatje Oorlog" (war fries) or rather War fries with onions. (originally it is without onions but the onions do make it better). It is by far my favorite fries /sauce combo. Speaking of fries. If you ask for "patat Speciaal" (or friet speciaaal, or patat friet speciaal, depending on region) you get Mayo, Curry and onions. The original speciaal was invented way before curry became a thing and it used to be Mayo, Ketchup, Onions. Imho the superior option. Try it next time. When ordering just ask for "patat speciaal ketchup no curry" and you get the proper one (and if you have an older employee probably an aproving nod) I have my opinions on the "decorated stroopwafel" but I get that they bling it up for (especially American) tourists. When you come from a country with 20 different flavors of vanilla, just plain vanilla is just... plain. For those that don't know. The stroopwafel is not two cookies sandwiched together with stroop (syrup) in the middle, it is one cookie that is sliced very carefully in top and bottom half, slathered with stroop and combined again.

🤣 we do enjoy our ketchup but we are enjoying a lot of other options as well since we have been able to try so many new things abroad!

The peanut sauce is from the indonesian cuisine and the Dutch colonizers liked it too good 🙂

yes! We have seen a fair amount of Indonesian food influence. We agree--it was so good!

mayonnaise in the EU, especially Netherlands and Belgium. can not be compared to mayonnaise in the USA. Fact.

Too bad you got the stroopwafel from the tourist tiktok shop.. it is too expensive and not good. Stroopwafels at markets like the Albert Cuyp are the best. In my opinion it is the best place for tourists to go... there is great Surinam food there.. Febo (Ferdinand Bol street), Hema. Albert Cuyp market gives the best real Dutch experience. Also Heather is much much more beautiful with less make-up.

Holy poop, those prices at Pont Neuf are horrible. Much too expensive. Never seen such high prices for a 'patatje' in my town, or anywhere for that matter. I wouldn't buy there.
@MLWJ19935 ай бұрын
It's Amsterdam... Everything is more expensive there. 😂
@CompassChronicleTravels5 ай бұрын
haha noted! Yeah being a big tourist city it makes sense it would be such a high price. Hopefully we can try some again in a less touristy destination because they were REALLY good.

You had all the right food at all the wrong places. You really found every overpriced tourist trap in town

Thankfully we go to the Netherlands fairly regularly so we will try these all again in other areas for sure. We happened to stay in Amsterdam on our way to our final stop so thought we would explore the city and try some food but we are hearing a lot that other places would be a better choice for most of these items. Will definitely have another go at it on our travels 👍🏼

Go to smaller villages and not the big city's... those big city's are all tourist traps.... in the small villages you will find the real dutch foods and not things the made just for stupid tourists (sorry if I offended you but I mean the general tourists)

Americans: " lets try the ministroopwafel" 😆😆😆Thats a normal size silly. But seriously, avoid Amsterdam. Those Stroopwafels with ll the toppings arent typical Dutch. Thats a tourist scam. Go to Alkmaar, Delft, Deventer or Groningen. Avoid the big tourist magnet. Food and prices are much better there 👍

Stalingrad at the Amstel has nothing to do with the Netherlands, get out of that town if you want to see anything real Dutch. As others already said its a massive tourist trap.

Why do you test traditional food in Amsterdam? The worst place. They don’t serve it a decent way. This is to bad. Please people go to other places in the Netherlands and get the real deal.
