Today we are visiting Efteling theme park in the Netherlands for the first time! We were blown away with how magical this park was!! The level of theming at the parks in Europe has been absolutely top notch and we have completely fallen in love! We have so many Disney friends back home who we know would be enchanted with Efteling. It's got all the magic of Disney but is totally unique and so special that it's hard to put into words! You have to see it for yourself!
In Part 1 we get to ride Symbolica, Baron 1898, Fata Morgana, Villa Volta, try some food in the park and experience the Raveleijn show!
To check out part two, head here: • ✨ Visiting EFTELING fo...

The Efteling opened as a fairytaleforest in 1952...designed by Anton Pieck ( the Walt Disney of Efteling)....his signature grimm look of everything and typical toned down colours made The Efteling unique. In the 80's they moved on to a bigger audience by adding the biggest rollercoaster of Europe in the days ( Python)...and added more rides to enlarge the park ...and today it's one of the biggest parks in Europe. They won numerous awards for their rides and achievements....loved your vlog and curious to the next episode...greets from The Netherlands ;)

Thank you so much and greetings from Germany! Thank you for the great info! I actually prefer that toned down look that he went for! It’s really really lovely and gives a bit of a mysterious and enchanting ambiance as well. We had just watched something on the fairy tale forest the other day since visiting and what an interesting story that is! We are thinking of a 2 day trip next time so we can spend some considerable time just in the fairytale forest!

Hello thanks for visiting Raveleijn! I'm a cast member/host working for 5 years now at Raveleijn, I always love to welcome new guests to our magical city! The show is a bit different then the books and series. So I won't bother you with the entire backstory written in the book. In the show you have the woman standing on top of the tower, Halina. With her medallion she controls her Ravens. When you came into our city you went through a big gate. The 5 knights you see, they are actually young children but with the Ravens sent by Halina they changed into adults when they entered the city and they changed into knights. Everyone has their own special power. Thomas got fire, Maurits got wood, Emma got metal, Lisa got water and Joost got soil. They are able to bend those powers with their weapons. When Joost got his power, he woke up the evil hiding in the city. The big dragon called Draconicon. Draconicon is a mechanical dragon powered by Olaf. When Olaf took the medallion of Halina, Halina lost her power. So the 5 knights tried to defeat Olaf in sword fighting. When Olaf and his guards got defeated. Olaf's last chance was his Draconicon. Draconicon can only be defeated by the 5 'chosen' knights with each of their own special power. But only when they work together they are able to. The reason why they did put their weapons back in the chest was to hide them from Olaf. Because without the weapons they can't defeat the evil in the city. When draconicon got defeated all evil in the city vanished. Halina was able to come back from Olaf's spell and her Raven came back with her medallion. And with that medallion she sent Olaf literally down. I hope it's a bit more clear now and if you got any more questions don't hesitate to ask! (sorry for any typo's :))

The rice dishes you had were Indonesian, or at least the Dutch version of Indonesian food. It's very popular over here. (Language tip: if you find yourself traveling across the Netherlands and stumble on a 'Chinees-Indisch' restaurant, you might suspect based on the word forms that'd be 'Chinese and Indian': instead it means 'Chinese and Indonesian')

Anton Pieck is the one who made the drawings for het sprookjesbos, the fairytaleswood. But originally he was an artist, a painter and a graphic artist. He made beautiful and very detailed artwork. It’s fun to see his artwork and how it fits into the Efteling. There is a museum about his life and art in Overveen :)

Efteling is truly a happy place for me. I have been going there since I was a baby (according to my parents)😂 There is even a story that says Walt Disney went to the Efteling and got inspired, but people don't agree on it being true or not. The park is great for pretty much every age group and I love the nature and how themed everything is. My favourite element of the park will always be the music. They even had 'Efteling in concert' shows where an orchestra played most of the themes. I got to go to the concert and it was one of the best evenings in my life. I hope you'll go back a couple more times. Even after all the times I have been there throughout my life I still always get a new experience and find new cool little things❤

@@CompassChronicleTravels Trivoli and Efteling are literally the two oldest themeparks in the world. And it is worth checking them both out! Both parks are completely unique. They each have a typical European magical way of storytelling that is based upon centuries of history and fairytales. For me Efteling is unmatched in terms of giving that sense of old world magic as well as the total commitment for even the smallest of detail.

Also loads of candies and I always had a belly ache in the car. But that's kinda the thing you do here in theme parks. Years ago efteling didn't really have a lot of food options, only fries. They pay so much attention to the right music. There's documentaries out there which tell you all about the musical side of the rides.

The Goat Riders in the Vila Volta ride is based on old spooky folk tales from the south of the Netherlands and pats of Belgium. There was a gang of robbers and thieves about whom stories were told that they were satanic and flew around on flying goats. The character in the park was the leader of that gang. They weren't really satanist and didn't ride goats. Flying or otherwise. But they did rob a abbey. For which he was cursed,

As such Indonesian and Indonesian inspired food became popular amongst the Dutch. More or less every youth here learns to make their own nasi or bami dish. Slight exaggation, but based on reality anyhow. As such this 'asian' food is Dutch-Indonesian food. I often explain it like this: what British-Indian food is what Dutch-Indosiand food here. Basicly the same story.

Without a doubt THE themepark in the Netherlands, others follow at a fair distance (although Slagharen and Helendoorn might come close when it comes to nostalgia for the Dutch) Pardoes was added in 1989 as mascotte. Before Pardoes. The first mascotte as far as I know was Jokie de Prrretneus (Jokie the funnnn nose) followed by Kabouter Kleine Boodschap (Gnome Little Message, that "name" is used in the Netherlands to say you need to go Nr1, a "grote Boodschap"or big message is Nr 2) Longnek has been used in advertising and commercials since the time of Jokie. Have you been to the Ïndische Waterlelies" (Indian Water Lilies) also known as "de Efteling Elfjes"(The Efteling Fairies), It is an animatronic show, the story was written by Queen Fabiola of Belgium.

I was looking for an explanation of Villa Volta translated in English. Especially what the animatronic is saying in the beginning. This is what i found: The legend of Villa Volta is played on audio during the pre shows. This is in the Dutch language. Please find below a translation for your benefit. In the middle of the 18th century a wave of violence engulfed our Brabantian Campine and Limburg countryside. Hordes of unscrupulous bandits tore through our peaceful streets, plundering and setting fires. They called themselves “The Buckriders” after shadowy spirits of the air that, according to a medieval myth, swarmed the dark night sky, seated on bucks. Sixty long years the gang carried out a reign of terror over the rural population. Their satanic guild sign; a bucks foot, made everyone shudder and filled them with fear .... This house, this cursed house ... Hell hath found its equal. That one cursed evening in the Belgian Campine ... The sun was low and we sought beds for the night but found no trace of villages. But suddenly, in the distance ... a great building. The Postel Abbey, we knew. We brought the horses to gallop, and when the sun set, we arrived at the chapel. There was light behind the windows and it was deathly quiet. No monks chanting or pious mutterings. Behind the chapel door, gold cups and silver candlesticks for the taking, hahaha! With this in mind we rammed the door! No one .... The altar sparkled with its spoils. The candles were lit ... strange. My men cracked open the offertory box, and I myself emptied the altar. And then, suddenly, a slender hand appeared on my shoulder. I looked around, and behind me stood a young woman, her eyes ablaze. All saw her, and the clinking of gold and silver ceased. She seemed ... to float in her long white dress. For a moment I felt something like fear, and she spoke to me: "You, Hugo van den Loonsche Duynen, thou desecrate here this house. So repent, and seek not to call the Lord's wrath upon you ....' But I, I overcame my fear, dismissed her with scornful laughter and shoved her away roughly. I called for the men to leave and saw that she dissolved into nothing ... A day later, I reached my house. I was shocked; atop the facade stood...SHE! The lady from the chapel! Her arms waved as if swaying in the wind. I heard her voice, as if it were floating in my head: "Nowhere in your own home, nor anywhere in the world shall thou find rest or peace, now that thou hath violated God's house ... only when a noble person with the clean conscience of a new born child will enter your dwelling, shall thou find peace in your home and in your heart ... That curse, my gruesome fate, so far has not been broken ... Enter with a pure soul, so that the doom may fall from this house, and my soul can acquire the rest, which I so greatly desire .....

Fata morgana has nothing to do with pirates, it's based on the 1001 Arabian nights fairy tale. With Raveleijn your missing the whole backstory: a ten-ish part TV show that came with the attraction. It's about a troubled family who moved to a new house, which the kids hated. They end up traveling to the past, gaining elemental powers (turning them into adult warriors as well) and fighting the bad guy who uses dark magic to create living animatronics to conqquer the area. Of course the whole thing turns them into a happy family again. They give up their powers because they saved the day and returned to the present. At least that's my vague recollection. There was even a computer game you could play yourself. The goat riders were a criminal gang in the far-ish past, accused of using dark magic and dealing with the devil. The old guy is the leader and his house is haunted as the result of his evil deeds.

Holle Bolle Gijs Is a figure originated from a old folk/children rhyme as far back as the 19th century but possible older, it translates in English to something like this: ''Have you heard of the Big round cart What was that hollow-bulged Gijs on? He could munch, big chunks A cow and a calf and a whole horse half An ox and a bull and seven tons of beer A ship full of turnips and a church full of sheep And still Gijs couldn't sleep from hunger!'' They make them say thank you in different languages for international travellers (in the Arabian dark ride some animatronics do the same) so it's not due to the theming of the park. And very smart they put the vacuum system in because now it's entertaining to throw garbage away instead of a hassle.

I think that compared to the sheer size of the european parks, the number of visitors and the few months of sunshine (compared to places like florida or california) most european amusement parcs do a very good job, are very family friendly and offer lots of fun for everyone at an affordable price during the few months of the year they are opened for the public. As in Jan van Eijck, often spelled Jan van Eyck, famous (then) Dutch painter. Indeed, ij can be spelled as y. But it has been fallen in and out favour. Nowadays it is spelled ij, not y. We reserver y for you know, words imported from English for example. As to how ei, ij and in some older spelling eij or y is pronounced, just google translate egg in Dutch. It's "ei". Play how it sounds, et voila. In current spelling it would be Ravelijn. Also, the spelling in the park is somewhat a mess since Kleyne Klaroen is spelled that and not Kleijne Klaroen. Akward?

The goatriders at first were a legend, basically witches and satan etc. But in the 1700s they were an actual real life group of robbers and extortioners who stole from everybody and murdered lots of people for 50 years. There were a lot of confessions, 500 people were convicted, but those people were tortured, so, you know. Supposedly people who joined the gang swore an oath to the devil, and renounced god, so the trials against the goatriders were more or less in the same vein as the witch trials, they took place around the same time. Nowadays they think the gang were actually multiple gangs rather than a single big one. The guy in the house, Hugo, is supposed to be the leader of the goatriders, and you're in his house. He robbed an abbey, and was cursed by a lady for it, she's on the top of the house. The curse causes the room to spin, and Hugo to be trapped there. Only a completely innocent soul can lift the curse, but apparently none of the visitors have been innocent enough. :)

And you need to know it is made in the late 80’s so it’s an old darkride I believe they will be full restored this summer… to make it shine again… Droomvlucht is also,a 90’s product… so again an nostalgic ride for a lot of visitors… but that one is fully repaired last winter … My favorite rides are the nostalgic ones (python, droomvlucht, Fata Morgana) and also symbolica, Flying Dutchman and Joris en de draak of the newer rides… The retired ones Pegasus and BOB are also great coasters… but Pegasus was not a smooth ride haha

That’s a really good way of looking at it! I think a lot of really good parks leave some open to interpretation which also really helps take you into the magic and fantasy with your own imagination. Love that! I’m a sucker for nostalgic rides as well so can totally relate to that. Looking forward to riding Fata Morgana again with fresh eyes after reading so many things about it. And curious to see what they do in an update. Haha awe yeah it’s a bummer when classics get retried. We are still looking forward to trying python next time because it was closed that day.
