The dual rear/ brake lights are designed to only go in one way. It looks like you have it in back to front so the brake light is lit when you put the rear lights on and therefore as it is brighter, you can't see any difference when you press the brake. This is why one of the locating pins was larger.

Spot on. The correct bulb has one of the pins offset slightly so you can only put it in one way

@@TheSavageGarage Thats because its the wrong lamp, I think it should be a 5/21W but the one you are trying to fit is a (equivalent) 4/21W which have the pins offset slightly (approx 170/190 degrees instead of 180/180 degrees. Both have one pin further up the shaft but they are not opposite each other when you look end on.

The probable reason for the stop/tail lamp not fitting is either you tried fitting it 180 degrees out (they only go in one way) or that the original spec is for a 5/21W lamp and you have a 4/21W lamp (or vice versa) which have different pin configurations to ensure you can only fit the correct replacement, if it doesnt fit there is a reason why so please dont resort to bodging it by filing the pins off. I have noticed on a few of your latest videos you are diving in without taking a second to think about the problem which is not good.

Mike Burnitt I didn’t fit them the wrong way, off camera I was trying to get them to fit for ages, do remember I don’t film everything that happens. Filing the pin was literally the last resort just to see if it worked

Correct. 4/21W (566) has the pins offset laterally slightly and are only used on a handful of cars; some Mondeo, Octavia, Jaguars for example. 5/21W (380) much more common. Both types of bulb have 2 filaments which are usually the tail light (4 or 5W) and the brake light (21W). They do have other applications but that's the most common usage and the reason why the ones In the vid (380s) wouldn't fit properly.

I worked in the motor industry, and at at a Ford dealer. They had bulbs with both offset height pins, and some had the pins at different angle positions around the base circle. It was for E11 Type Approval compliance, so you couldn't fit the wrong colour, or wattage combination bulb for the model and application. Ford were doing it long before the Mk3 Mondeo, when the Sierra was in production. They had started fitting clear and smoked lamp lenses and the wrong type bulb could be an MOT fail. The type of bulb fitted was dependant on if a lamp had an Orange, Red or Clear/ No inner dome covering over the bulb. Wrong wattage, or LED bulbs can also affect bulb failure monitoring systems. They work by reading the current flow through a circuit.

Most bulbs are tungsten filament. Halogen found in the headlights.

Grief, you need to get plastic trim removers. When doing the side repeaters you went beyond scratching your paint, you removed it entirely. The lights in the mirrors are called puddle lights. The rear brake bulbs didn't work because the polarity was off, rotate through 180' to sort that.

I've got some Autobeam bulbs on my own car, LED reverse lights and also the halogen chrome indicator bulbs. Sadly the chrome bulbs didn't fit the rear light cluster but look great on the front headlights and wing mirror indicators (no more unsightly yellow!). The reverse lights are bright enough to be seen (and see with) without being too blinding especially since I live out in the sticks. I ended up using Osram LED Premium brake lights and indicators for the tail lights, they're a bit brighter but more importantly the use the reflector housing to bounce light back out unlike the majority of LED retrofits project the light which can dazzle/blind other drivers (Autobeam are also projector type). Downside is that they can be a pain to find in the UK depending on your bulb type. One great aspect of Autobeam their customer support is excellent if you have issues and/or the bulbs don't fit (as in your case) and the best way to contact them is through their Fb page.

Hope u read this. You can check a website called bulbfacts. They test out all kind of xenon/led headlight bulbs in both reflector/projector housings. They make a picture of all light patterns etc. There are led bulbs designed for reflector housing that put out the same pattern of light. Hope it helps u out!

The bulbs with the offset height pins are the combined stop / tail lamp bulbs. You may also find on some Ford's, they also have the pins staggered around the base too, instead of diagonally opposite. That's so they will only go in the correct type lamp and bulbholder position.

Rotate the headlight LED's to alter the output patern. Takes a bit of fiddling around but you can achieve the same pattern as OEM. Easiest way is to park facing a wall, have the original bulb in one headlight and the LED in the other. Rotate the LED to match the pattern of the original. You may need to alther the height with the headlight adjusters slightly. Then repeat with the opposite side. Easy.

Try turning the headlight LED bulbs, i had that problem at first. Light up the whole street but turned them about 90 degrees and got a much better beam pattern. Also there should be two adjustment points on each headlight usually can be done by screw driver that change the light alignment too but you will need to have the car facing a wall to see it properly.

Stop/Tail lights can be a real problem with LEDs. Because they don't radiate light in quite the same way as incandescent bulbs, there's often very little discrimination between sidelights and brake lights. So they need to be designed for specific applications, taking reflectors and lenses into consideration. For the same reasons, that's why the LED headlamps don't work properly with the regular lenses and reflectors.

19.30 try rotating the bulb 180. the bulb holder takes a bulb that has the pins level, the one you have is a split pin, thats why you had to remove one pin to make it fit

The not working bulbs are probably polarity issues. If the holder is not actually rivetted or similar to the chassis, just try the opposite polarity (use a 9v battery to check ;) ) If that fixes it, might be worth letting the donor company know. It will save them returns and complaints

Those LED headlights are gonna be nothing but trouble, 1. It seems your lights are reflector style only which will just spread that light everywhere and blind oncoming traffic, they’re only suitable for projector lights. 2. During your MOT they’ll class them as xenon but you’ll get a fail because xenon should have headlight washers and be self-levelling. The interior and the exterior puddle lights are a nice job though 👍🏼

I convert my car lights into LEDs so much in my time as they are a lot brighter, less power and more efficient than the boring dull yellow halogen bulbs! 😁 Novsight, Osram or Phillips LEDs will be better in the reflector housing as the beam pattern doesn’t scatter so much like cheap led bulbs!

The only LEDS I have fitted to my E63 BMW are the angel eye bulbs to get rid of the yellow light (for aesthetics) and the interior/footwell/door puddle lights (for practicality) Not changed anything on my RS as Im more into keeping that OE.. Another great video. Not so sure about the headlamp and indicator bulbs, they are just a bit in your face. The interior bulbs though are the best I have seen and the puddle lights are far more useful being as bright as that. I also wonder about the legality of the exterior lights as most of the aftermarket LEDs state for "off road use only", and so are not fully road legal.

James can you please put a link to the Autobeam website in the description? I'd seriously consider these purely on the strength of this video. LED bulbs are technically illegal for external bulbs because the car didn't have them from new but they will pass an MoT. It is however, legal to replace an entire light unit with an LED one.

The rear interior reading lights won't work because fords wired them in reverse polarity, you need to modify the unit/wiring to make them work with leds

It is not an alignment but a focusing issue, this is something that cannot be fixed, and why retrofitting LEDs is now illegal in the UK. Also, OEM LED fittings just like HIDs require headlight water cleaners and self-levelling.

Strange how the LED company sent you a normal tungsten lamp for the main beam. It may look white with the blue tint but it's actually stopping the light getting out and you will see less with the main beam.

Buy right buy once has always been my thing. I've worked for a LED lighting manufacturer before as an engineer. And I am all for safety and being able to see where you are going. But imo it is getting stupid now, to the point where pedestrians and oncoming vehicles are getting dazzled. It looks cool, but they need a lens to focus or diffract the light pattern. I'm also referring to OEM lights from manufacturers too, I forgot the last time that my eye's were not able to adjust to low light conditions :-P

James, your rear bulbs have a different 'nipple' offset from the bulb you removed..rather than the nipples being directly opposite each other the nipples are offset. The previous owner must have 'bodged' the bulb so it would fit. Have had the same issue between the cars I have...bought two boxes of yellow indicator bulbs...but they were the wrong sort so had to order more...

Not dissing anything here just talking from experience but.........you might want to check the indicator bulbs with turning the indicator on and not the hazards because I reckon they’ll be flashing as if you have a bulb out under normal use of the stalk!

The Tail/Brake Lights won't work due to the fact that the pins on the bottom of the original bulbs are staggered (aligned slightly differently) that is why your Rear lights are not functioning correctly. It is not down to wattage or your Lights. I personally have changed all my Mondeo lights as I have the same model as you and this Is what I discovered along the way. UNLESS you get custom LEDs made specifically for this car or cars like this I would stick to getting original bulbs. Hope this helps!

I do like LEDs and I have then on my car just I do find that some are too bright and these ones are definitely too bright, it's a bit of a trial and error when it comes to LEDs especially of Ebay some work some dont some are too bright some too dim, but I find that somewhere in the middle is the best. Having them so bright it doesn't look good tbh. I would defo change a few of them James to less bright ones but love the vids mate

Headlight LED bulbs are a bit of a minefield. Cheap Ebay jobs are bright but often give the wrong beam pattern and blind oncoming traffic whilst not giving you enough beam to see anything meaningful especially on high beam. Its worth spending more on a better quality hi/lo (H4 fitting) bulb so retaining proper beam pattern and focus particularly on high beam. Its also worth noting on a legal level that unless you have self leveling beams, you should not be fitting LED bulbs. Having said that, I have some fitted to my motorcycle (H4) and having spent more they are a good replacement and give a good beam without being anti-social and destroying everyone elses night vision. As for HID, unless your vehicle actually specifies them as OEM bulbs, dont bother!

The double filament bulbs on rear lights should only go in one way. Most mechanics and amateur DIY car enthusiast struggle with these it is simple fix though just turning bulb another half turn and it would fit without having to file down contact nipples

Hey - not sure if you'll even read this comment with it being over a year since you uploaded this video but figured I'd ask anyways cause you never know! I've tried looking on their site, even Facebook'd AutoBeam to ask them, and I can't seem to find the LEDs for the interior, side lights or full beam. Don't suppose you happen to have model numbers or anything to hand do you? My rear interior lights have duff bulbs so there's no light in the back at all and I have Xenons in the headlamps, with standard lights everywhere else so it looks horrible if you look at it with full beam or fog lights on where colour temperature is concerned!

i tried every sort on my mondeo never get 1 for rear light/brakelight all are crap mate stick with halogen i tried also indicators rear ones with resisters the lot and a real sunny day they cant be noticed loads of horn hunking when indicating drivers behind think your not indicating when you are so i went back to all halogen better but others might think different
