+Ian P I don't know. Honestly I think that they paint a much prettier picture of working than love. It is places all the strengths of the workplace against all the weaknesses of love. It does not suggest that you should not love, but rather that work is a much more desirable life. I do think that +sweetbug44 has a point though. It mostly seems to be an observation of life since the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive, although you can definitely make them mutually exclusive, or allow one to be such a driving factor in life that basically only one of these aspects exist for you.

+Puto Pato You're not wrong, but I've noticed that what they choose to communicate tends to be the opposite of mainstream ideas. The result is that we get a different perspective on a common issue, ultimately allowing more objectivity.

+Dhiego Bersan There's a decent amount of truth to that. Going into a relationship with strong reservations about how you believe it /should/ be can absolutely negatively affect the relationship and bring it to an end when it wouldn't necessarily have to. It's good to avoid thinking the kind of thoughts along the line of clichés that you hear in Hollywood films, such as you shouldn't ever have to change yourself for your true love, etc. etc. It's all very subjective and situational, and a relationship between just two individuals has such amazing complexity to it that this video dedicated to the explanation of that is well deserved.

I am teaching classical guitar in a German music school and one of my students is a butcher. I have never seen such stiff hands in my life before and I really had no idea at the beginning, about how this man would ever be able to play a single clean note...But turns out that he is such an enthusiastic, patient, curious and motivated ( and very funny! ) student, that after only three months now, he can play a few beautiful small pieces very well and it's getting better every week! He is very proud of himself! Me too, because it is a wonderful feeling to know that you could touch someone's life and add a little beautiful thing to it... This is nothing special about me though. All my colleagues have experiences like that: You have the most shy teenager who fears that he will never find a girlfriend, and after a few months, he gets drunk at a party, dares to play and sing a song, and one of the girls feels so touched that they get together:-) You have the most arrogant, rich, vain business man who is going through ego clashes probably every day, all day at work, and behaves the same horrible way during the lessons. But one day you finally make him understand that we are making music " together" and not playing one "against" the other, so he realises that it's alright to play wrong notes and make mistakes.... He becomes kinder...He may even transfer this attitude into other areas of his life and be an a bit more relaxed and nicer guy in the future... So this is how I feel about my work: you love what you are doing, you have the chance to improve yourself every single day by learning from students, colleagues etc..., you are doing something meaningful and you know that your efforts are never in vain. If you really try your best, then even the laziest, the least talented or the most disturbed and misbehaving student will learn something from the time you have spent together. It doesn't always have to be about the guitar, indeed it is always much more than that... It is about the relationship you build with that student. About giving him/ her a sense of worthiness ( no matter how they play), self confidence, teaching them to have patience, to focus properly, to enjoy and value every moment. There are so many beautiful things you can learn through music... That was the work part. And this is how I feel about romantic love: It is basically like gambling... You may put so much time, love, effort, hope, good will in a relationship and ultimately see that it was absolutely for nothing. Other than giving you a good lesson about life may be ( which is also quite something indeed... ) The lesson I have learnt is in this one line: " There is fiction in the space between you and me". ( This is from the song "Telling Stories", by Tracey Chapman ) Ultimately how you see that person and your relationship with him is your fiction, and than there is "his" fiction. So there isn't much "reality base" there to build something upon. You will never entirely know the other person, and what you think that you know may also be completely mistaken. I could get deeper and darker in this but I 'll skip that part. Here is a kind of happy ending: If you want to have children and build a family, don't panic. There are many professionals ( writers, philosophers, therapists) who can help you. And to give you hope,I must say that even I know some happily married couples. But if you don't want to have children, you may seriously consider NOT to move in together: This way you could keep your own silent, peaceful place on earth, you could reduce your expectations from your partner to a minimum and concentrate mainly on giving what you can.

+Lua Veli like both what you write and what you play :D having myself, given lots of thoughts regarding these topics, I have come to feel like the biggest problem is how unrealistic our expectations may be towards love. even someone who expects to much of work will also be likely to be disappointed. perhaps a stoic approach can easen some pain and let us be surprised when things do turn out fine. right now I'm in a hurry and can't go into much more details but I can say that indeed, work has given me more satisfaction than amorous relationships. I'm curious about those darker insights that you mentioned. btw, School of life has covered an interesting topic which is friendship and monastic life. it left me wondering if it wouldn't be nice for us all to have more overall relationships and interdependences, so as to not fall apart when someone ends up not being what we expected or providing what we need. I believe that good friends can heal a broken heart. peace :)

...totally agree, and have to say that was beautifully put... I teach guitar sometimes myself and you're spot on,..a lot of the time it's you that goes away from a lesson having learned something new. As far as love goes, I think you're right here too,..If I've learned anything, it's that you'll never completely know or understand the one you're with...all you can really do is give as much as you can afford to a relationship without burning yourself out or giving so much that the other person feels it's o.k. to take advantage of you're kindness and affection, wether not they even realize they're doing it... if i may reply in kind; "she took the worry from your heart, but then again, she put trouble in trouble in your heart instead..*" ...guess it's a kind of trade-off,... risky business, that love game. . . ;-) (*Joan Armatrading-down to zero.)

+Carlos Giudice Hola Carlos. Sorry for my late reply. Thank you very much for reading and also for visiting my channel. I also happen to think that the most noble and profound form of love is friendship indeed. Since you said that you were interested in having more insights on the darker side of love, I wanted to recommend you an excellent book. It isn't just dark, but it is a book full of wisdom from an excellent psychoanalist from Argentina: Gabriel Rolon. I assume that you speak Spanish, huh? It is called " El Lado B del amor". I have read two more books by him, both of them are great too: Historias de Divan Historias Inconscientes I think you can order them by Amazon, from Argentina or Spain. But since it is always more expensive, I finally bought a Kindle, just because of this guy! If you want to have an idea just search for his name on youtube, there are excellent interviews with him too. Te mando mis mejores desoes.

+Jaha Rising Hello there! Thank you very much for reading and for your message. I wholeheartedly agree. Honestly, I think in love and in friendship there is nothing more beautiful than offering something to the other that can ease and even beautify his/ her life. But as you say, it is also important to know how much you are supposed to give. People think it is cold and calculated to think about this subject. But it really isn't. There is an excellent interview with the psychologist Adam Grant, on a podcast called " On Being with Krista Tippett". He wrote a book called " Give and Take"".On the interview he gives very valuable insights on this subject. Thank you very much for the wonderful song. I have just heard it. Best wishes!

I lost my mum a year ago today to cancer. It was fast and aggressive. Close friends have tell me how strong I am to deal with it the way I have. This intentionally respectful platitude frustrates me. But it's not ever something you can ever respond to honestly. They don't like it. I've tried. "I appear strong because I have no desire to break down in front of you. If I want to feel sad I will go sit alone and allow myself to feel sad until I start to feel silly. There is a comfort in knowing that when you tell me my life experience is traumatic, you just haven't thought ahead to the inevitable loss of your own parents. It's a pain we all end up sharing one way or another." People are offended when you tell them you don't want to share and that their parents will one day die. There must be a way to fix this. I'd like it so that from now on, people don't offer their judgement or opinion on a set of events, they just give you a hug in silence. That's enough. No words needed. Infact! Remove all unnecessary verbal communications. If you don't feel like its been long enough or enough things have happened since you last saw each other to warrant a hug, then a polite nod of the head will do. "Hi how're ya" in passing also frustrates me. I never respond with the expected "fine thanks how are you?" but with "content". People talk too much these days and say nothing. Social media condolences for celebrities they've never met are another frustration. Anyone else feeling this or am I just broken?

I usually cut people some slack, they don't know what to say or do to help. Unfortunately, grief process is pretty internal and alone. I had a friend who just later had me over , went about their social life, included me when I was there, let it go when I didn't want to join in. we never talked about what was wrong. I had another friend who was always on me , talking to me to intensely,..I needed both of them. Don't tell another person how to grieve or expect a quick fix!(That part's not 2 you shh!) There isn't one. You have to find your own way.. people are caring for you the best they know how. ♥

Well it's not really that we try to communicate by just intuition all the time. Most of the trouble and frustration comes when we tell our partners what is reasonable and right and they simply don't do it, for EVER, or that they have their own sense of what is reasonable. And the frustration and anger continues even after we come meet half way but one party or the other just goes back to their old ways. This is not a simple matter that can be solve purely with communication. A lot of couples, if not all of them, go through this and this is the main reason why people divorce.

This was an excellent video. I do agree with some of the commenters that said that not all jobs are the best experience. I think what still makes work a lot easier than love is that work still has an overall linear and rational pattern where love is chaotic and emotional.

So basically, a romantic relationship is like having an impatient jerk as a boss. But seriously, they make some good points. Work is structured with clear expectations and it understood that there will be a learning curve, however, romantic relationships don't have to be the diametric opposite. What is being described in the video is immaturity and a lack of empathy for another person's flaws, in short, this is what relationships are like in our teens and early 20s. Most people do outgrow this and start picking up the skills to treat someone with respect and kindness.

+bob polo Yes, it does take dedicated and diligent work to have good relationships with one another. I certainly do see more dysfunction and unhappiness in relationships I've observed, but there is a continuum rather than polarities in relationships. I feel like the videos addressing relationships here are very polarized, and being that it is the school of life, I'd hope for a bit more of an objective perspective than that. Either way, when I watch these fun vids with my husband, we feel very grateful for what we have. We are one another's sweet spot, a reprieve from the world, and it is work - the type of work The School of Life addresses in their courses and products. I'd love to see this woven into their videos as well.

Ella Birt You make a valid point about the channel's name, "The school of life." You'd think there'd be a broader view, more encompassing; but maybe the speaker's own personal experience with relationships colours the messages being conveyed. Personally, I dislike the Freudian undertones in some of these videos. We're not all repressed adults, craving sex with our parents. At least I'm not. Oh, and I'm happy to hear you're in a loving marriage. Take that general consensus!

Because work has a set of rules, regulations, procedures, time cards, etc. So people can follow and not fuck up. You know what to do , when to do it, and how to do it. LOVE isn't like that. Also, LOVE is mostly emotional not logical. So you get some fucking crazy shit happening.

I think the difficulty of work is that exact attitude of needing to hide certain emotional facets. Love in that regard is easier because there's an acknowledgement of these emotions and it's the best way for authenticity to shine through, no matter what the consequence. Granted in work you're in control, but that doesn't make the process of doing any easier concerning the subjective constraints. Love may be a torrid thing, but having the space to just be makes it one of the easier activities to do. It's just the reality of responsibility that makes the love feel like work I suppose. End of the line, I don't think love (such a broad, absurd concept) can be set against the "work of our hands".

why work easier than love. you pain, you gain you're cycling and mastering the speed you're hiking and mastering the slope you're stressed but that's how you gain satisfaction over getting the task done. you build skills and difficult things becomes more ease. just like working out, just like fasting. love? you fell in love, and deep. mellow in the beds of roses. fell, deep, weak. there are hell of ways need through to get back up again.

my work is wholly unaware that people are incapable of improving if they feel threatened and humiliated. In fact, I would go so far as to say that my work behaves as a party in a romance, expecting their employees to read its collective mind and whims and know what it wants without being explicitly told. I am pretty sure all other works are similar, except, maybe Google. Idk?>

I like the concept that love is a skill, however, I think that the idea of the purpose of "lovers" is still abstract. E.g. (3:18) "utmost to improve those they care about, through their love". What is the implication of this statement? Should we imply that every lover is aware of that and is actually ready or willing to accept it? How is this improvement supposed to be? What should be improved, who decides that and when? If one of the lovers improves it mean a change in the person and therefore a direct impact on the relationship: does this "improvement" also mean an "improvement" back to the other lover? etc...

+Johanny Perez Sierra I think this teaching is meant for both sides and maybe not on the second day. Some examples. "Could you make this or that sometime for my dinner?" or "If you are going to pay the bills you can't be late." Or on the other side. "You forgot to take out the garbage."

Love is a selfish process. The process in which two individuals find themselves in another person - their own flaws, their own beauty, and their own faith in themselves. When one finds utmost appreciation for one's self in another person, then they will love.

Work is mostly by our hand. Or at least we find some logic when we do it. But when your happiness is attached with someone else its irrational and it gets frustrating and disappointing for not understanding the logic behind the need and vulnerability you have for that person.

Thanks for the video. before finding your channel, i always looked down at philosophy and how it had no use in modern life. How wrong i was. I need answers to questions that can't be answered like, what is a meaningful life, will I be successful, and what is love and will I find it again. I still need rational thinking and facts, but I also need psychology.
