Why We Only Learn When We Repeat

The School of Life

Күн бұрын

Our education system is based on the idea that we can learn things once, and that they’ll then stay in our minds throughout our lives. That’s far too optimistic. Our brains are like sieves. If anything is going to remain in them, we need regular reminders of what really matters. Fascinatingly, religions always understood that.

FURTHER READING
“One of the most obvious but striking things about a modern education is that you go through it only once. You show up every day for a number of years, get filled up with knowledge and then, once you’re twenty-one or so, you stop - and begin the rest of your life…”

It's not so much learning through repitition, because even with repitition you still tend to forget. You mostly learn through reflection and application, when you reflect and understand the purpose of what you are learning and the value thereof, that's when knowledge is stored and well, applying it.
@ahmedshinwari
@ahmedshinwari 7 жыл бұрын
You have a good point about reflecting upon newly learnt knowledge... However, nothing stays in mind until one encounters it on regular basis. For individual that is habit. For a group of people that is culture.
@JakeByrnePhD

I'd argue better learning comes from iteration (I prefer that term rather than repetition, as it can imply some variation as well as a repeated theme). Reflection and application are examples of such an iterative process). But I come from a social constructivist perspective, versus the filled pail (or sieve) metaphor.
@ConsistenTea
@ConsistenTea 7 жыл бұрын
Reflection is ok. But, if you really read a book, and marked it as your favorite, you just try to read it again. You'll see that even after having multiple reflection on the same book, you'll find so many things that you may feel you read for the first time, or you realize you read it but didn't thought about it this way.

Umm, failing over and over again at the same point, making the same mistake would be hell. Gaining wisdom means failing and learning to avoid the same mistakes for the future. I think this video might be my favorite across all amazing videos from this channel. As a language learner, I have been listening a lot of tips and lessons from polyglots, and the key of their success is, likely, repetition. Establishing habits around the things you wanna keep in mind, learning new things and revisiting previous concepts is the "secret" of lifelong (and maintained) learning. Not just for languages, but for anything, I guess.

We should make our own midnight prayers whether that is reading a book, writing a piece, or just contemplating on life love this idea! Midnight prayers are often said to have more rewards in religion. This is for a reason, our will and purpose should be strong enough to make us stay awake till midnight or wake up in the middle of the night, and it is the perfect time to reflect and have deep thoughts about life in the serenity of the night when everyone else is asleep. 3:30 thanks for sharing insightful videos the school of life!

There's also a neurological explanation for this, pertaining to the myelin sheath. There seems no substitute for repetition, and a true anti-ageing practice (as the myelin dies off in the brain, and is especially attacked by illnesses such as Parkinson's and Dementia) would be to learn something new and complex in the 2nd half of your life; the violin, perhaps. Or Japanese, or carpentry.

the reason why we study so much with comparatively little repetition in school is because we have accumulated so much knowledge. Everyone has their own path to take in the field of their choosing. Schools have many functions, but one of their main functions in higher school education is to prepare you for university and what you will learn there. As you can expect everyone to study something different, you want your students to have at least heard the most important concepts of every field so they have an easier time in university. The matter of fact is that a mathematician has no need whatsoever for interpretation of poetry and a translator does not need to know how to solve integrals. Learning is beautiful; but just continuing to study without having a proper job at the end of it can cause lots of suffering, so people should better focus on getting good in only 1 area of expertise and focus practice of repetition on that 1 field.

Outstanding!!!! Keeping people going to church every week is exactly why dangerous and backwards ideologies continue to permeate. We're finally reaching an age where we break free from these mindsets, and understand that love and forgiveness and spirituality is not dependent on believing in an imaginary man in the sky. We have to force ourselves to refresh our minds constantly with the knowledge that matters most, or we'll start acclimating to crazy beliefs from whatever else we're continuing to fill our heads with.

Throughout my whole life I was constantly bombarded with vague things like application, reflection, deep understanding etc. All these hacks and new methods in social media and self-help videos. After many years, I have come to the conclusion that I should seriously consider the basics. Now I rely on repetition. It's not just fore new things. Many times I will resolve the same math exercise three times, instead of solving three different exercises. And I see so many benefits.

As a teacher I experienced numerous times during 'teacher training' and 'professional development' the instructor handing out some papers, or talking about a book. Invariably if I read the hand out 2-3 times waiting for the class to begin, or if I read the book a second time - I understood more about what they were paid to teach us than they did. What's worse than sad, pathetic, is that it wasn't that difficult to read and re-read until understanding. (What's absolutely ridiculous is how much money I made from books and articles I've read. There is a downside. The money is good, but you don't have a feeling of accomplishment because in the end it wasn't at all difficult. You have to challenge yourself in other ways.) The first day of teacher training, I sat through a three hour lecture and took notes while someone with a PhD in education lectured. Their first words? "These are the most important theorists of education, while I haven't read their books I've read about them."

Aristotle said the same thing: virtue through habituation. You can't just learn about bravery and instantly become brave. You have to repeatedly carry out the act of bravery (or at least try to be just a little foolhardy once in a while). Then, you can have the knowledge of when one should be brave. Also, just learning something isn't enough. You have to utilize that knowledge in the real world. Knowing that in an emergency someone should call 911 is good only if some actually calls.

Another idea that will change my life. Now I understand better why I always revisit some contents in books, films, songs and even in KZbin channels: so that I do not unlearn valuable things by trusting solely my memory. That said, it is possible as well, on the other hand, to let go unwanted behaviors, ideas, habits and beliefs that harm or no longer speak to us by not repeating them. It obviously sounds easier then it is, but it's the same movement consciously applied in the opposite direction. There are extra words in the subtitles in 2:49.

What he failed to mention is that repetition is very hard to develop into a virtue - boredom or lack of meaning - yet easily into a vice. What’s the point? The theological basis of repetition is Liturgy. Repetition can not ever really take off without the virtues of faith & hope. Now ask oneself why Liturgy is a constant cycle of repetition, without the empty and superficial mantras of “indoctrination”. There is a theological & philosophical meaning behind it that goes far deeper than the comparatively shallow practical application given in this video

@@sorella1259 Your problem may be that you have put all atheists in the same box. As an atheist myself, I would never make a blank assumption about the practitioners of any religion. Just because I do not believe in a god (or gods) does not mean that I categorically dismiss any one for their beliefs.

Hamza Ben Cheikh Math and physics are high level abstractions, which is why they are difficult sublects to internalize and retain. They are abstractions built upon abstractions, and if you don't adequately learn the lower level abstractions you have no chance.

Um what do you have against religion? I feel this video would be more effective if you focused on why repetition works as opposed to making it about religion vs us

I think that the thing that should be repeated are the ideas themselves, and by WRITING or speaking about them (i.e. actively rehearsing) rather than rereading them, which is a passive rehearsal, and only encourages familiarisation with some stimulus (be it book or lecture or novel). Also, religions do it for similar passive reasons. To make the person passively thinking (not thinking for themselves) and to indoctrinate them.

This is incomplete. The goal is memorization and understanding. Not repitition for repetitions sake. The key to proper retention is an exponential increase in time between repetition. Review your flashcards every e^x minutes. X being a whole number.

This video has reminded me of the word with which Allah (God in arabic) adresses us, humans in the Holy Quran with the word "insaan" - the ones who forget.
@sabis3132
@sabis3132 7 жыл бұрын
Leitilumo It is not "required" to memorize it word for word, that word is actually used when Allah wants to remind us about behaving well, doing good deeds etc. We repeat verses of the Quran in our prayers to remember ourselves of God and guard ourselves from performing bad actions. It's really easy to attack something you don't know/it's foreign to you. Keep believing what the media says, they are sadly just targeting us because it fits perfectly in their selfish agenda; we just want to live peacefully by the truth.

Repetition, or brainwashing. There is more to it than repetition. Also, you never stop learning as you learn as you work. Finally, repeating the same thing will never get you anywhere.
