AMENDMENT: some of you have brought to my attention that the “chemical” vs “mineral” distinction may not be accurate to how these filters actually work. A better classification would be “organic” and “inorganic” because there is overlap in the mechanisms of action: “chemical” filters can still reflect a percentage of UV and “physical” filters can also absorb and disperse UV as heat energy. For this reason, I have removed Part 1 of this video (3 minutes of background info before I went into the sunscreen). I will try to make follow-up content with more nuance. I based my content in this video on information found in scientific literature, like this: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7759112/#:~:text=How%20do%20sunscreens%20work%3F,as%20shown%20in%20Figure%201. In the future, I may consider using the terms “organic” and “inorganic” (though these terms might also be confusing as organic has a different meaning colloquially, so I’m not sure yet). Anywho, thanks for the great feedback and discussions in the comments. ❤ x Robin PS: I bought these mineral sunscreens myself and this video is not sponsored by a sunscreen company. Just Skillshare :)

I don't think any of mine are mineral, but I would consider any of these suitable for sensitive skin. At the moment I'm really enjoying BOJ moist sun serum, I have dry skin and this feels silky, gives a lovely glow, and has a nice but very light scent. Another favourite is the La roche posay anthelios face mist, it's the best thing for easily re applying over makeup and you don't need a mirror. I only buy it on special offer because it's a bit expensive otherwise. I've also tried the Numbuzin pure glass tone up, i have pale skin so it works like a tinted moisturizer for me, which is usually hard to find for lighter skintones, it can be a bit shiny though. I tend to layer different spf products too, eg. If I'm using the boj sun serum I might use a foundation that also has spf on top but I don’t know how helpful or not that is

I often experienced excessive sweating after applying skincare in the summer, and when I stepped outside, all my skincare would just melt away in the harsh sun. But for the last 4 months, I've started using rice berry sunscreen by littlleeextra, and I no longer face that sweating issue with this sunscreen. The sunscreen doesn’t make my face look darker. In fact, I’ve also begun using rice berry face moisturizer and face serum underneath this sunscreen, and my skin remains hydrated. Daily use of these products has been helping to reduce pigmentation.

Thanks again for your amazing, thoughtful and definitely un-sucky videos & kind regards from Berlin!

Aw this messages warms my heart. The best part about KZbin is connecting with kindred spirits-who have similar skin issues and interests haha. Are there any health/wellness topics you’re especially interested in or loving at the moment? Thanks for clarifying the mixing sunscreens point! It’s an important one. I usually only mix sunscreens when I am not relying on them for my sun protection (so tinted formulas that I essentially wear more for coverage than SPF). And I will definitely look into the Anthelios product you mentioned! I haven’t tried that exact one. Thank you for sharing and making my day ❤️

@@TheScienceofSelfCare Aw thanks for your reply! And I quite agree, love KZbin for that 🥰 The UVMune Invisible Fluid is quite a popular one but chemical, unfortunately - if you still go for it try and get the European formulation as they still have to use different filters in the US. I’m really into functional medicine content in general / biomarker testing specifically at the moment, would love to see you test or talk about whether it’s worth it! Maybe even with an expert, I absolutely loved both the interviews you did. Right now I’m also super intrigued by vagus nerve stimulation for calming the nervous system / autoimmune reactions and feel like there’s little high quality content out there so far. For Europeans: I love the Heliocare 360° Mineral Tolerance Fluid Spf 50. It's a slightly tinted sunscreen that will be invisible on pale skin tones. For extremely sensitive skin the tinted Alga Maris face SPF 50 from laboratoires de biarritz is amazing. This one comes in several shades but if you apply the recommended amount you'll look like you wearing a thick layer of foundation.

Thank you for your detailed review - I found a few in there that I'd like to try of the liquid and stick options. Right now I'm using up all the ones I bought from my last trial! I only use mineral sunscreens as well, but still find my eyes stinging, so not only do I not apply them on my eyelids, I don't even put them on my forehead (but I have a pixie that covers it mostly). I'm 56, and have a fair amount of skin damage from not knowing about sunscreens when I was younger (I laid out with Coppertone 4 and flipped over every 30 min as a teen) so I am really trying to protect myself now, and need something that feels good and doesn't sting so that I really can just put it on every morning.

I use that one too! Honestly it is the only mineral sunscreen I’ve tried that has a tint to it. All the others are too expensive. Like, we’re expected to pay how much for a tiny tube and use every darn day?! No thank you! It looks too pink at first but gets better as it dries down. It also reveals all the skin flakes you didn’t know you had. Does it do that to you too? I use tret and have that problem more often than not. But on good skin days it looks like makeup and evens out tone really well. I hate wearing foundation but will put this on sometimes because… sun protection. Undecided if it breaks me out or not.

@@TheScienceofSelfCare It's very gentle on the skin an it's very sheer for its formulation. I think this is causing me to use too much until I have an unnecessary whitecast. Does it get a little softer if it's used longer or gets warmer?
@TheScienceofSelfCare3 ай бұрын
@@janas.7687Interesting! I often rub it in with my fingers and sort of warm it up and work it in. I think this helps. With this formula, I do think it’s quite sheer so this is why sometimes a UV camera can be helpful. You can see where you’ve applied and feel confident that you have covered your bases. I often wear a tinted spf on top, which disguises the whitecast of most formulas but this one does genuinely seem very sheer. Granted, I have very pale skin that will not show whitecasting as much as deeper skintones. So I really value hearing other people’s experiences. Thanks for sharing yours so far!

It’s a drug store option that’s easy to blend and doesn’t leave a crazy white cast. Granted, it’s quite small so probably best to only use for the face and neck. x Robin

@@TheScienceofSelfCare I just took a look. The stick costs $10 for 0.49oz, the lotion costs $10 for 6 fl oz. Would you know why the cost is so different?
@TheScienceofSelfCare4 ай бұрын
It’s a great question! It’s probably nicer ingredients in combination with price gauging because they can sell it as a stick. I think a single stick would last many months if just used on the face. Coppertone also has this body lotion that’s $10 for 6fl oz-haven’t tried it but it’s the same line as the stick with decent reviews. :) amzn.to/3LV4bdK I’ll try to research some cheaper large bottle options that can be used for the full body. It’s definitely worth changing to a formula that doesn’t need any diluting! X

Not that everyone needs ANOTHER sunscreen recommendationz but I highly recommend Dr. Sam Bunting's Flawless Gossamer Tint spf 50. It retails for $40 plus shipping, which has become more than I am comfortable spending right now. I'm watching this video after trying to find a cheaper temporary replacement and failing. Appreciate the video!

Hi Lia!! ;)

It’s really disappointing seeing you spread misinformation on the mechanism of organic and inorganic filters. They largely work the same and only 5-10% of uv is scattered in inorganic filters. There is no evidence that concludes organic filters have endocrine disrupting effects when used normally. Injecting a rat with obscenely high levels cannot be translated into a film on the stratum corneum. Anything can cause irritation and contact dermatitis. Even zinc. Mineral are NOT better for the environment. If you bothered to look at the studies done on reefs and sunscreen filters, you would realise they were at unrealistic concentrations, in a closed environment and were inconsistent; zinc often performed worse. This is not surprising when zinc known to be toxic to marine life. When mining for zinc and mineral filters, they are often contaminated with lead. While zinc is purified to remove the toxic lead, mining is still not good for the environment. Organic filters are far superior in environmental concerns. The irony of stating spf boosters but demonising organic filters, when prettt much all of those spf boosters are organic molecules. Butyloctyl salicylate acts very similarly to those same filters you try to avoid, it’s just not regulated nor approved by governing agencies. Please educate yourself before trying to state “facts”. Especially when mineral sunscreens are not accessible to those with darker skin.

Hey Ryan, thank you so much for this detailed and thoughtful comment. My number one goal is to share quality information that is helpful to people. If that is ever not the case, I will amend a video, remove part of a video, or remove the entire video altogether. I will consider removing part 1 of this video after I consult with several dermatologists and hear their thoughts. I try to use scientific sources and books to support what I share on this channel. I am a single person making these videos so I can make mistakes. I genuinely appreciate having these sorts of discussions. Though I can agree with some points you make, I am not sure I agree with all of them. For example, I continue to read that mineral sunscreens are better for the environment. If you are open to it, could you please share some sources or perhaps experts who can help elucidate your points-that would be much appreciated! I am always open to learning and amending. Many thanks, Robin

Thank you for sharing! I am a BOJ fan! I didn’t love their probiotic sunscreen (stings me) but I really love their matte sunscreen stick. After months of using the stick, my skin was a little sensitized (unknown cause). So I took a break and went back to mineral. It’s impossible to say if it was the sunscreen stick without further testing but it is SUCH a lovely formula. ❤️💕 If they ever come out with a mineral formula, I’d be the first in line! :) xx

@@skelly0000Oh Chris' skin looks great. I understand where you are coming from, you're most likely right. I just can't shake the feeling that the sun shouldn't be a natural enemy to our skin. There's also the idea that high polyunsaturated fatty acid content in lighter skin people's diets is responsible for the adverse effects of sun exposure. Maybe that's what sets apart those that are harmed by the sun to those that are not.

@panagiotisapostolidis6424 People in the past used hats, clothing and parasols and even masks (visards) to protect their skin and eyes from the sun. There are also theories of certain ointments and things like rice bran or ochre being used for sun protection
