Dan’s encouragement helping me to keep practicing. He’s like the Bob Ross of bass.

My little win is that from time to time I go back to some songs i learnt in the past and seeing that i get through it like a breeze (as opposed to spending a week to get the song right) really motivates me. Thanks again for all your efforts and the little time you give us

Hi Dan, I’ve been following your channel for 2-3 years and have liked many of your videos, but I feel like I should stop being lazy and actually thank you with words for all your commitment, talent and for probably making many of us better players than we were. So Thank You

That's really kind of you to make the effort - I appreciate it! Keep up your playing.

Dan, you're the best. Having been playing bass for 25 years, I watch a lot of bass content on KZbin. Your content is consistently down to earth, approachable, and easy to understand. I steer new bass players to your channel all the time. To be a good player is great. To be a great teacher is great. To be able to do both is a sign of excellence. Thank you for being who you are. Cheers! PS. Please let me know if you ever want to sell that old Ibanez bass.

Hi Dan, been playing bass about 18 months and learnt major, minor and pentatonic scales then started playing with utube backing tracks. Wasn’t really improving much so went back to beginning and realised although I could do scales I couldn’t REALLY play them well. I’ve gone back to relearning them and realised I’m the saddo that actually enjoys scales. The constant quest to improve fluency is becoming almost addictive. The by product is I’m also improving in other areas. Never forget the basics.

I love the scales too.

I started running out of momentum a year or so ago, having lacked the tools to riff over chord progressions. I purchased Dan’s Music Theory course. It’s brilliant and has brought new life to my playing. Highly recommended.
@fenegroni15 күн бұрын
I purchase same as I was nearing the end of a beginners course. I think every teacher has pros and cons. I think Dan’s theory course though is great in that it breaks it down in chapters and you could work on each one in a week or a month depending on how much time you have practice as you do other things.

Wow, thanks so much for those kind words. I'm really happy it's working for you.

Thanks - yes, you have it for life so you can pick it up at your own pace which was one of the ideas behind it.

About a year ago I bought your book, “The Bass Guitar Practice Journal” from Amazon. But I’ve only been playing Yousician for the past year so I put your book on the shelf and forgot about it. As I was watching this video, I was wondering the best way to take notes about new practice techniques you introduced me to (like playing scales over a drone to help with ear training, brilliant), and I remembered I had your book. I just got it out, I think I’m finally at a sufficient level to use it now. Thanks!

Love the learn it to forget it tip. Pentatonic runs are great for this. I often just chuck one in when it feels right and i have no idea what I just played.

The fretboard is coming alive to me. You have helped me more than you could ever know. Now, I play bass in my church. I love the theory and now I am loving being actually able to play more than the theory. I hid behind it. You are the best teacher on the internet. Thanks.

I'm so glad to hear that the fretboard is coming alive for you! It's amazing how theory and practice come together. Keep rocking those bass lines!

What a great video for me at this very moment in my musical journey! I’ve been playing almost exactly one year. I feel like I’m finally getting to the point where I can really internalize and begin to understand what you’re laying down. It is wonderfully useful information I am excited to work into my practice. Thank you!

I needed this today! I've been struggling with motivation to practice lately. Im about 1/3 of the way through your Motown course. I need to get back to that. Small wins are always great.

Thanks, Chevee! It hits all of us, don't worry. In all areas of life. Sometimes a little kickstart is all we need.

This is such an inspirational lesson. All those great tips. I have used some them. I think my biggest thing was practicing a song and trying to get it right. But also using the knowledge of scales and appegeos to work out how the music is made. Thanks again Dan for a great lesson
@staxtry7 күн бұрын
Great lesson, Dan. I'm already doing some of the things that you suggest, but you have also given me some new ideas - thanks. As you say, learning bass lines to existing songs is really important. My latest thing is to create my own bass line for an existing song. Mine lines are often adapted from the original but incorporating ideas of my own.

Dan another brilliant video love the drone sound wow I bought an Ibanez 700 fretless no fret marks that was my inspiration after my band split unfortunately our lead guitarist's past over This has brought me back to the bass left it for eleven months was really hard to pick back up ❤ love my basses but my fretless gave me the change I needed ❤ Your videos are always amazing you work so hard 💖 thank you

Nice video 👍. My small win has been visualizing the fretboard as a way to get to sleep (a double win! 😀). I don't have a photographic memory so it's a challenge to work across the frets and up and down the strings. However it really helped me "see" the notes when I'm playing rather than calculating them. Those B-C E-F anchor points you mention really help. I like to visualize the modes and see how those anchors shift through the scales.

What a great session. I have been playing for a little over two years… Dan, you have been there the whole way. I would say for me… I keep plugging away at my favorite songs, take your content, start with the root only, add a 3 or 5, keep plugging away and eventually I’ll see large gains… it all slows down. My fretting fingers tend to land in the wrong place. Love the see a lesson on the Kala. Man I could keep going, looking fwd to the drone and drum loop stuff.

I have set a goal of improving my reading. I use transcriptions and read and perform one measure at a time until I have it down. Learning in small intentional bites has improved my ability to learn whole songs.

Not to discount what Dan does, he’s amazing, but if you’re looking for iOS Garage band tutorials, the go to guy is Pete Johns / Studio Live Today is the name of his YT channel. Everything you’d ever want to know about recording into GB specifically on IOS, he’s done. No kidding and not an exaggeration. youtube.com/@petejohnsmusic?si=DcWoitP7BeIjmAdp

Great tips, ty. The sample, sustain, looper & drum pedals certainly have changed the learning environment for we bassist/guitarists! ...much more fun than Mel Bay & a metronome.
