All signs of insecurity. But if you like the person, maybe you can work around these dating faux pas. My fiancé, wealthy, never let me know how much things cost until we were in a committed relationship. He only recently let me have a real glimpse into his wealth. It’s overwhelming. Glad he didn’t tell me straight off. He dresses normally and drove a normal car. Always modest and understated.

The key toss 😂 I would be so tempted to throw my Honda key fob down too. “Oh I thought that was just what we were doing!” 😂

Actually, I have noticed that if a man of any financial level asks you for a date, it is up to him to pay. Also, ladies should never pretend” to offer to pay their share. The insincerity of this will be loud and clear. However, whether you’re sincerely offering or faking an offer, both actions are highly offensive to any masculine man. And a genuine turn-off . This is NOT the time to be the Boss Babe. 😬 Save that for another situation. It’s not a matter of our ability to pay, it’s a gentle surrender to the masculine providing , with a sincere thank you. Letting him pay doesn’t obligate you to do anything in return, except to show GENUINE appreciation verbally. Period.

We don't generally think anyone is trying to be a "boss babe" by offering to split the cheque (On the French side of my world, it would be impolite not to offer). The sentiment overall is that we appreciate the purse reach and offer to split the cheque and we sometimes feel cheap if there is no attempt/presumption that we're paying. Men who make decent money are usually self conscious about that fact to begin with, unless we're dating someone that we are certain is of similar means (i.e: I'm on a date with a lawyer/doctor/banker/socialite) Obviously if our date is very insistant to split the bill, we usually feel as though the date went poorly (context matters). Of course Context and delivery are important. If I gave my card before we even sat down and ask "Do you mind if I pick up the check", I wouldn't feel weird at all if my date did not offer to split the cheque.

I feel like all of these mistakes scream "new money." That's not to say being self-made is bad (I'm a big fan of a work ethic), but I've known a number of people that feel insecure in their newly acquired wealth and attempt to overcompensate.

Thi reminds of the beginning of the short film The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse. The mole asks the boy what he wants to be when he grows up. He says, "Kind". What if we stop referring to wealth in the same breath as success. Success in life has little to do with wealth.

All lessons I learned from my former clients. Usually the more wealthy someone is, the less flashy they are. All of them were wonderful people who were more than happy to share all sorts of wisdom with me. I especially loved to hear about their travel & adventures, but also their business & investment experience/knowledge.

These points are so good! I really like that you touched on the “mentality” of the power play. As a young lady, I went on three dates with a young man from old money. His family practiced a different sect of a similar religion to mine …and by him asking me to dinner, I just assumed he was perfectly fine with the differences, right? He was not. Before the end of that third date, he made sure I knew exactly what came with a commitment to him like the endless resources, money, connections, and social status…if only I converted. That was our last date, understandably. He was very considerate of my dismissal and I made sure he knew he was a catch even without all the bells and whistles of his family’s position. I did have to outlast some social shunning within the circles his mother traveled but it was a small price to pay. Today I am happily married and so is that young man. His mother still avoids me in public and that was 27 years ago. 🤷🏻‍♀️A mothers love.

In my late teens and early 20s, I dated a girl who came from a wealthy family. Biggest mistakes she made were her attempts trying too hard to seem "average" (downplaying wealth/acting like her family was middle class just because she wasn't like Richie Rich). It goes to show that while being too ostentatious with one's wealth can be off-putting, it _is_ possible to go too far the other way. Anyways another excellent video as always and I know I said it before but I really really love the sleeveless turtleneck look on you, so elegant and classy in its simplicity.

Even worse is mistake #2, where THEY choose a restaurant, invite you out and then sort of expect YOU to consider paying (I should add, I was a grad student and he came from money and I would have been fine just going for a walk or having coffee, but he suggested going to a way fancier place to eat than I would have been able to).

Just imagining being in the scenarios you created is enough of an ick factor. So after the key toss, what do you have to say from there?

Can I add, the wealthy person when the bill comes and they say: it's on me! But then say: oh, expensive! As a way of being "humble". When they know and you know that it's not expensive for their pocket.

I went on a date, well really to his house to a very well known singer and he wouldn’t stop talking about his self. He complained about his age , upcoming artists, he was very persistent that I drank an alcoholic beverage when I kept declining them. To top it all off on one of the worst dates I’ve had, in the midst of his complaining I complemented his career and he started to yell at me!!! He said you try being 45 and relevant . Obviously because he yelled I cried , then he made fun of the fact I cried. I left. Just because they are successful doesn’t mean a thing!!! If they have no manners whatsoever leave.

Well, one more mistake is worth mentioning. And it's dating a person outside of your circle. It pretty much always ends badly. And I don't mean just money. Education, values, intended lifestyle and more.

Not a "dating" comment, but talk of how much one pays for an item is always tacky. I have known people who go to the other extreme when I have complimented something they have by bragging about how little they paid for it at a thrift shop or yard sale. It is not an appealing trait either way.
