In Poland, we define a friend as a person we have known for a long time. When we have just met someone, we call them znajomy.

When you know someone for a long time sometimes you know that he she is not your friend. But polish friendiness is better than british. People in Poland do not have time and have a lot to do(excepr for students, clerks, some girls)

True. We are expected to be punctual from an early age. But many people are not really punctual,another thing is that for us 5 minutes is already late ^^ Being nice or polite does not mean friendship. Only good manners. Friendship is more complicated ^^ It is true that Poles do not smile enough, we do not show our feelings that much. Most of the time we have neutral facial expression. Only the very strong filings shows... if we are very happu, or very sad or angry... unless you are a teenager XD

A friend is a person that will answer your phone call at 3AM, water your plants or feed your cat when you are on vacation and lend you money if needed and offers to pick up your medicine when you are sick.Polish people usually have a spare key of their neighbours place (in case that's tells a lot)

Well, I'm Polish and unfortunately, you are correct. It's unfortunate because everything you mentioned comes from being self-entered and a bit egoistical. People focus on themselves and their feelings instead of thinking of someone else - making a stanger's day better by setting your own problems aside for a split second - that's not an option for a lot of people in Poland. It comes from years, decades, maybe longer, of people living in very bad conditions (wars, communism, etc) where you had to take care of yourself to survive and that didn't leave a lot of space for caring about the the well-being of strangers. Being kind to others is still considered foolish by many people in Poland - you are a "frajer" because they assume no one is gonna return the favour. They think if you're smiling you're being fake - as if they can't fantom that someone might be smiling because they want to improve someone else's well-being. Now I'm complaining like a typical Pole... 😂

In Polish, there are really two words that we use quite frequently when referring to certain relationships. znajomy meaning acquaintance, but przyjaciół is a friend. Where, as in the US, for instance, when we’ve just met somebody, we still say, that’s a friend and not an acquaintance.

Some people, mostly women but not always, have so-called "resting bitch face". Their natural, neutral face looks as if they wanted to kill you on the spot. When called, they can even say "WHAAT!" in an aggressive manner, but that is still an illusion, because those could be very sweet people once you know them, unless you won't step on their toes ;). Then the hell will break loose.

Hit the nail on the head with punctuality. We do not hesitate to end relationships if the other person is not punctual, as it is a sign of total lack of respect.

Sure not EVERYONE, but as you say, generalizations are there probably for a reason--they've been recognized by others and yes, cultures have things about them that could set them apart from other cultures. Most of Poles I know have really limited social circles, mainly composed of family members rather than external friends or even work colleagues. I attempted to shake this attitude because it gets lonely, insular and having Polish-only social circle would drive me delirious.

I am polish and i totally agree with the first one on time i went to Costa Rica last month set up a guided nature tour and 30 minutes after agreed time no one showed up i was about to call them when they showed uo 45 minutes late i was like wtf is going on so yeah i experienced that myself

In the commo days, no one was ever on time and that annoyed me constantly. Maybe now they have a NEW respect for punctuality but it was not always so. Many things have improved since the bad old commo days and maybe punctuality is included.

Well... I'm really happy about the time, they are really good about that. That's something I don't like in Puerto Rico. Although my girlfriend still has problems understanding "horita", a not defined time. It could be past, it could be the future. Yup, I don't like that they don't smile or joke like us... the complaining... ufff, I hate that, they have everything n anyway, they complain. 🤷 They should live in a Latino country.🤔k Friendly, no, they are not, and if u compare them to us, latinos, uff, they are far from that. One thing that it's really weird for me, is the way they stare at you, men that's so rude for us. U could be shot if you stay looking at someone. Now I understand that's the way they are... but man... it's weird 😅😅
