The modern double cut custom, also from 2017, was also produced in this colour but called DC rust as one of 5 variations. However, unlike the sg, the top is quilted maple and the multi ply binding separates the 2 layers.

As a lefty I really like the aesthetics of the SG as it’s the closest Gibson to a symmetrical body . But I’m sad that currently their lower price manufacturer Epiphone make only one model version for lefties … the muse lines and p 90 versions etc only come in right handed models .
@feral91_2 жыл бұрын
The truss rod thing isn't an issue. It should be waaay out the brass nut to really think something is really off. As long as it moves easily, and the neck moves according to it, it should be fine. You probably won't be tightening it all the instrument's life, just until it sets around your relief preference.
@joesharpe76852 жыл бұрын
As a full time tech, I have to say your truss rod rule is not unfounded but is certainly not a hard and fast rule. Its more an indication there could be an issue. But not evidence enough. If the truss rod looks over tightened, measure the relief then loosen it, if it increases the relief. And the neck is at a reasonable point there's no reason to be concerned. Hope this helps Austin!

Austin, for clean tones try turning the amplifier almost all the way up and then back off the guitar's volume to about 5 for the clean tones. I'd imagine that Deluxe Reverb of yours will really come alive giving the clean tones more harmonics.

@@lptomtom the worst? I cringe hard af and my palm stays tattood to my face buuut I think the _worst_ part of his videos is the discussion of how much Gibson should be charging.. Also, the autopsy where the pups are laid on the veneer finish with no cloth or anything between them is top 3 worst parts of these videos. It's almost as bad as that dude Norman or whatever his name is that gets the very first Tele or Strat and during his autopsy doesn't even bother to keep track of which screws went into which holes its infuriating but I guess when you have that kind of access to the most coveted instruments in existence day after day year after year decade after decade, it becomes no big deal.. I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ All I know is it's physically painful to watch these instruments being eviscerated on his autopsy "workbench" and I agree with you that the lack of even a rudimentary acumen for the operation of the instrument is indeed *worse* but nothing compares to the physical manifesting of pain that comes from listening to this unwarranted self important dweeb admonishing Gibson for not charging more than they do - that is NOT what a human being does to his contemporaries, especially considering the unjust amount of influence he weilds over the market.. Sorry for the long rant but this is a very sore subject for me ( ͠° Ĺ̯ ͡°)

Austin, I've always kinda questioned your truss rod maxed out theory and wasn't quite sure it should be a hard and fast rule to live by. Now seeing examples like this one coming out of the factory with threads showing, could it be that some truss rods may just be manufactured a fraction of a inch longer or it could also be that the rod is set in a slightly different spot sometimes? Just my 2 cents..
@phillippitts62942 жыл бұрын
I personally agree with you. And also think a properly repaired headstock on a Gibson isn’t necessarily a deal breaker. Probably stronger than original and might even stay in tune on the g string
@beegeewhy2 жыл бұрын
There are definitely varying lengths of rods coming out of the factory. I’ve only built a few guitars and have seen them vary a bit.

I have a 2019 R7 that, from brand new, has a load of thread showing... but I have no neck adjustment issues and was even able to dial in a bit of tension to suit my preference of a straight neck...
@HBSuccess2 жыл бұрын
It’s as simple as this.. Gibson still uses old school manufacturing techniques that yield somewhat inconsistent results. Unlike the Asian manufacturers where everything is computer controlled and fully automated Gibson still has a fair amount of hand work going on. So some truss rods will have slightly different placement than others, and ditto everything else about every guitar. And that is part of the appeal for many of us. Instead of very consistent mediocrity you get in mass production, Gibson has always produced a few total duds… a lot of ‘ok’ guitars in the middle… and every once in a while the true gem that plays and sounds better than all the rest of them. That’s why you never purchase a new Gibson without playing it (and 5-6 other examples) because they’ll all be a little different, and one will stand out as clearly superior to the others. Before writing the big check, buy a plane ride to Sweetwater (or whomever has stock) and spend an hour or two you’ll be glad you did.

Gorgeous ' ...tones are fantastic ...I'd leave off the tenon cover to show off that wood mix ' ...love the Abalones and the gold hardware. `that neck bubble thing is nothing that can't be fixed with a very small blob of black or brown marker and an even smaller blob of superglue.
@Daddy537512 жыл бұрын
I’m gonna have to agree. The wood on the the back of this SG is actually more stunning than the front! (When the back is more awesome than a flame top, that’s saying something) Not really in love with the front finish, but I’m a sucker for gold hardware. It does offend me, as a builder to see a high end guitar with a crappy plastic nut, As it’s such a simple, but important thing so to me it’s just a bit of “wtf”? When Gibby gets their QC right, however, they do hit it all the way out of the park! Edit; The longer I look at the front finish, the more I’m liking it.🤘🏻

Austin, that red-to-green seeming finish color change reminds me of something in my own remote past. When I was a baby, I had red hair and blue eyes (no trace of either remain, though -- especially the hair!). When I got somewhat older, though, since my hair and eyes had long since darkened to something MUCH closer to the normal coloring of a Black child, I didn't believe them. Naturally, the first thing my intelligent parents did was rip out the photographic proof: Polaroid snapshots of me at my first birthday party. The photos they showed me showed a little boy with wild GREEN hair. Fittingly, these photos convinced me completely -- the intelligent kid I was knew that old Polaroid were prone to that very type of discoloration. I could even recolor the hair mentally to picture what it had actually looked like. Now what if that "Rust" finish had something in it that oxidized and changed color over time? Might we get such a color shift? Lastly, visually I love that entire guitar! I'll admit that the back is the clear star of the show -- but it's a GREAT show!

Best SG I ever played - Tokai SG 185 - far and away. Not an historian on gibson SGs, but had a defective '61 reissue made in 1994 (maybe the first year? If not the first, early), gibson never made it right. Played an 80s SG special that my guitar teacher had (a great guitar) and later got a faded SG on a "Deal of the day" (a horrid example of cost cutting - terrible guitar that as delivered popped and crackled as the jack hit the back cover neck contour and fingerboard did not blend *at all* - as if the whole guitar awas made and fingerboard glued on at the last second (A specialty of all "faded guitars") But nothing was close to the SG185 (the pickups were pure ACDC and the neck joint was more robust and the neck a little tubby - it had the balls that my SGs never had - the '61 resissue had 1957 classics and in no way sounded like a les paul with them). (tokai isn't a safe bet, either - the SG 185 was inexpensive used - $900 - one piece mahogany, made in the same specs as a type gibson tried to charge $4800 for, but the other model numbers after the 185 and in lower ranges weren't exactly vintage spec or anything close). Gibson has become a CNC gimmick company, though. The last natural feeling guitar that I had that said gibson on it was an early 2000s les paul (it felt like someone actually sanded the neck and touched it - which I think they did back then).

I love the beveling on this sg. The color...eh. It's the beveling that I love. The thinness of the side profile and how thin it is where it rests against your body, that's what I wish they did with all sg guitars. Unfortunately the rear bevels on the horns were not done, wish they were. I don't understand why the variations from on sg to another. It makes it hard to find one with all the specs that I want. Unfortunately the epiphones just don't come close, and the new epis don't have the rear bevels at all on the horns, and the side bevels are still not quite as defined as I want. I can't afford an old sg, 64 is probably what I would be looking for. So I guess I will have to build one.

I have to ask again as I am sure I’m not alone & we’re seriously running out of time for this specific model. Gibson doesn’t list what type of capacitors are in it & therefore AMS does not list it either & I absolutely refuse to take a screwdriver to any of my guitars myself. So, it would be absolutely awesome if you could do a full review & demo of the new 2021 Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Custom in Alpine White & perhaps discuss why this is a Custom Shop Custom with a COA & the Custom Shop case instead of a regular Gibson USA Custom, also maybe discuss what the deal is with Alpine White, why there is a $500 premium for it, why it would appear to be a more “rare” finish (at least that has always been my experience as going back to 2001 when I bought my 1st LP Custom I had to settle on Ebony because Gibson didn’t even offer it in Alpine White at the time) and maybe even talk about why this whole line appears to be different from all the others with Gibson offering Ebony, Alpine White & Silver Burst. If we could squeeze a video in like this sometime before the end of the year, as I am sure I am not alone in REALLY REALLY wanting to see a 2021 Custom Shop Les Paul Custom in Alpine White, that would be extremely appreciated!
