I began drumming by using the 4/4, but quickly came to be using the linear technique for almost all of my playing. I didn't even know it was a thing until someone told me that I'm going to have to learn more than linear playing. Because I didn't understand it at the time, I asked why because I could play quite a few tunes and have never heard a complaint. So he challenged me to play 3 different songs, all with "my " style and I was able to, easily. All three songs were from a different genre, including metal and he couldn't believe that I was able to pull all 3 songs off, and it was actually quite simple. I've kept much of a linear style because of this interaction and the disbelief it caused. 30+ years later and I guess you could consider me a very linear player because it has always been the way I could get things done. The most difficult part, you would think, would be making the track sound like the original. Again, something that just seems to work itself out. For example, I was recently working on The Immigrant Song and one of my band mates told me that it sounded almost perfect. I asked him to watch me play the song and then get a second opinion. He only said one thing. "I wouldn't have believed you if you told me HOW you were playing that tune."🤣 I'm not a great drummer but I enjoy playing. And, for some reason, I can take many drum tracks and make them linear, without making them sound any different. So, I guess linear is a great way to start because it does allow you to gain control over your hands and feet a little more quickly than layered styles. Maybe I just got lucky,!!!🤣👍🏼 Anyhow, thank you for a really good lesson. Much appreciated!!!🫡👍🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I used to go absolutely nowhere without a splash on kit. I'll have to start using one again.

Slick riff! Not sure it's my favorite, but one great example of linear drumming (I think) would be Steve Gadd at the end of "Aja."

Thank you. It's an easy one but there are many people out there who might have a light bulb turned on by it. Now It's just a matter of them finding it. I got TubeBuddy so I can get my SEO up. We"ll see. I hope you are well Mickey

I do my best to demonstrate basic concepts in many ways. There are so many people who learn and see the world so different.
