The biggest thing you can do for sound with any fan setup is to use loose rubber screws (or Noctua’s rubber peg mounts) and isolation pads everywhere that a fan would touch the case. The harmonics of your case interacting with the vibrations from the fans is what gives you that droning noise that you’re probably familiar with. The other most impactful thing you can do to get silent performance out of your fans is to set up your fan curves very carefully. There will always be RPMs where your fans will start to interact with the harmonics of the case poorly, and there will also be RPMs where your fans will run almost totally silent. Find those silent RPMs and set your fan curves to just transition between them in steps instead of smoothly transitioning through speeds. This also improves the life of the fans, as they will almost always be running at a single speed without having to slow down or speed up.
@938362 жыл бұрын
The one major flaw is using decibels to appraise noise performance. You can have two different fans each producing 40db. And one can sound extremely irritating because of its unique blend of frequencies, while the other sounds smooth and pleasant. Both at 40db. You could even have something at a higher decibel level that sounds significantly more pleasant than something at a lower decibel level.

Something seems off with the "bad" performance of the Arctic P12 in the noise normalized tests. Every noise normalized comparison I've seen puts them pretty close to the NF-A12x25. Maybe the 39dBA is a bit high, since the fan runs at almost full speed, a 35dBA comparison would be interesting. Or maybe they produce a frequency which the A filter is more sensitive to compared to other fans. So a raw 39dB test could be also quite interesting, or maybe even a 39dBC filter test.
@corentinrobin35132 жыл бұрын
Same, every single other youtuber that reviewed them put them in line or just behind the A12x25, with the exception of their characteristic whine at around 1000/1100rpm. Something is definitely off with his methodology.

I wonder if it's anything to do with the airflow testing chamber used rather than a regular case, you'd ideally want to measure flow in an airflow chamber but noise levels in a typical computer case where vibrations are more likely to sound as they would in real life.

The sweet spot for Arctic fans is their 140mm P14 fans, they're much quieter and push a ton of air while still giving amazing static pressure results for use with rads (thus explains their Liquid Freezer II AIO line up performing so well), in addition I think the 5 pack for the P14s was around $34.99 USD at Micro Center locations.

Great review. The only thing I'm missing is subjective noise "quality". For example Noctua puts a lot of care of this aspect, it creates a bit of turbulence on purpose to avoid harmonics (without sacrificing significant efficiency) and provides anti vibration gadgets to avoid case resonance. In my subjective opinion, more important than decibels is if the noise is "beautiful" or annoying
@d15p4tch62 жыл бұрын
One thing also to note is that even though arctic doesn't come with a splitter or anything, it's already able to be daisy-chained so it doesn't need a splitter. Also, you can get "rubber screws" that are rubber dampers, and it's like 5 bucks for 20 of em.

Arctic fans win by literal quantity. Technically with 5 of their fans, you can have the same air volume output as a single full blast phanteks, but at a fraction of the noise level. I have been a long time customer of arctic because of their price and performance through quantity. Also what about the cooler master sickle flow series? They have been around a long time, and I wonder how accurate are their advertised specs to real world.

I have a sickle flow, I haven't tested it as intensely as the video. IMO, it has a whine to it at low speeds if you're trying to run a quiet system. It is objectively worse than the masterfan series, not that great when compared with the big brands. I replaced mine with Halo Master Fans, because the MF's were about 15$(1600 yen), and they're just better. Quieter, RGB, more power, integrated daisy chaining.

Hello, sorry I don't understand English very well. Are you saying that 5 Artic make less noise than one phantek? Which fans would you advise me to have a maximum of silence. I have no problem with temperature even in summer.
@yensteel2 жыл бұрын
@@calypsojordana3274 Yes, that is what he meant. If 5 fans spin slowly, they could make less noise than 1 fast spinning fan. Those 5 fans can also still push more air than the 1 fan. Because the Arctic fans are cheaper, you can save money and still get good airflow by installing more of them in your case, such as 2 front, 2 back. You can buy high end fans but it will cost a lot. Each Noctua fan is $32 USD, each Arctic is $7-10 USD each according to amazon. Noctuas are quieter, but at such a cost many people will find them too expensive as case fans.
@Autotrope2 жыл бұрын
Decibels don't add up like linear values, they're a logarithmic value. 5 x 40dB fans is 47dB - not 200dB! If you choose a fan and find its highest CFM to noise range, and then run multiple of that same fan at that range it's an easy way to increase airflow a lot without increasing noise by much.

Foolishly I bought them 1, 2 and 1 rather than the 5 pack. At first I ordered 1 + 2 140mm. Then before receipt, canceled the 2 140mm and ordered 2 more P12s. That put it at $30+ USD. Then the last. But, what I particularly like about the Arctic fans is the minimum air flow at 200cfm. And, they will go zero db below 5%. Since the machine sits idle 99% of the time, I really like not sucking dust up into the machine. And you just can't beat the price. Fluid dynamic bearings, 6 year warranty. No, they don't have rubber corners, but they are very quiet. With the extra fans, they can turn so very much slower. I doubt they'll be any better. Blades design didn't change that much (if at all) and they capped it's rpm even lower than previous models. If anything, their marketing changed a bit, focusing more on looks and rgb lights.

I think the charts hurt the Arctic because it's not hitting 39db. They stay very quiet. Also being 1/2 to 1/3 the price of all the others. It's an obvious choice.

My fans are all over the place. I got 2 Noctua Redux on the front of my case as intake (with room for a 3rd). Scythe Fuma 2 cooler has its stock fans. 2 White LED Corsair for my top exhaust. Then finally, the stock rear exhaust from my Corsair 4000D.

Thanks . You best. I use Arctic P12 PWM PST in my setup with 1080 and 1800 rads, many fans, but 25 pieces buy only for 100 euro with shipping , and they work quiet. I have Ty-143SQ - is real loud . But Phanteks - someone just incredible. Very interesting how phaneks comparable with Scythe 3000 and Gentle Typhoon 4250 and 5400.

Yes exactly! 120mm based rads are vastly inferior to 140mm based rads. And all other applications as well. A 140x38mm fan exists from Silverstone, but it seems a bit old and loud

One of the biggest strength of IPPC3000 is its ability to survive dusty condition without breaking a sweat with it IP52 rating(there's also another version with higher IPxx rating), that is why it's an industrial fan.

I wouldn't say a run for it's money. They're great for sure, but not exactly better if you want to get technical and pricing isn't that aggressive by comparison(they cost around the same where I live and availability sucks). Noctua also comes with good extras in the box. Even with a similar sound level(will depend on the fan speed) it has a more pronounced motor noise compared to the A12x25. Still great though, but doesn't give Noctua a run for its money, at all.

This "Nidec Gentle Typhoon" is very interesting, because around here (EU) this thing is called Scythe Gentle Typhoon and it was released in 2008, it's not even available anymore by now. You can also not say that a fan of a certain manufacturer of this model runs at a certain RPM, because Scythe offered them in 10 variations and their max. RPM are in the article name, i.e. Gentle Typhoon 500, 800, 1150, 1450, 1850, 3000, 4250, and 5000.

Awesome video! I could careless about the rpm and the graph at 15:05 told me everything I needed to know. I’m so glad I didn’t over spent on other fans. The p12 out weights the price to performance ratio if you care about noise over a few degrees.

For the silent wings you’re suppose to use the pro version for rads as it comes with the static corner attachments for rads.

Cooler Master still sells the "Silencio FP120 PWM 2400" fans. I had a build with them a few years ago and they could PUSH some air if you crank them, but were rather silent if you slowed them down a bit. Might be an old dog but i think they can hang with the young ones still.

You need to test DarkFlash/Aigo fans (for multiple fans/case fans). The price versus performance is extremely appealing. That is what I am installing in customer's cases (and I offer a 1 year full warranty on my systems). Apart from that, I only use Arctic fans since they are the best value in being priced decently and being almost silent. Especially where I need to use smaller diameter fans (80mm for instance).

It's amazing how good gentle typhoon is. The performance is slightly lower than that of the T30, but it is much quieter. It is also almost equal to A12, but costs half as much. For me, he has one drawback - at low revs, he hisses a little. For most, this is not a problem.

I had a pair of NF-A14 industrial 3000 rpm... As case fans. Replaced them with MF 140 Halos and you can really feel how unoptimized for pressure those are once you compare them to the noctuas. they have to pull air through a filter and a metal grille
@pascaldifolco46112 жыл бұрын
About the Arctic P12 it's the "P" that means it's a pressure fan, "PST" is some acronym for the daisy chain feature, which is very handy given the price! I got 6 P14s, went mad with them after getting the Noctua Industrial PPC that go very noisy after 2000rpm, and less effective (imo) BQ SW fans, but I use them on rads, not as "airflow" fans, and want a very quiet 40db max system. At such low speeds below 1200rpm the cheapest fan give comparable results to much more expensive ones

I have been using those 30$ 2 packs of Corsair ML120's for ages. They are by far the best fan, let alone the best value out there. The CFM they push is unmatched without going industrial. The ML120 Pro is not any better than the regular ML120. You pay 2x for the pro name, and the regular 120 cost less than 15$.
