I completely agree about the RDX. I have a 2011 with SH-AWD and I live in the Midwest. Last winter we got a late snow storm that dropped 7+ inches of snow. Now, my generation of RDX has horrible ground clearance but boy. Did it go right through the snow. I remember in the duplex complex at the time, the drifts were so high and it would go through them. I turned off VSA and it was so much fun. Felt like a true rally car. The second generation RDX has the cheaper AWD system and I wouldn’t trust it so I’m glad the third generation went back to SHAWD.

@banksta3
@banksta3 3 ай бұрын
Sounds silly to make that illegal, as much as they're helpful. Where I live in the states, we get plenty of snow (49 inches or 120cm a year average), and it's so cold that when it snows, it stays on the ground for months. Most people don't use dedicated snow tires, and for the most part people are fine. But obviously these are 2 different cultures.

I really like wagons for snow. Upper Midwest and Wyoming has crazy winds, and the lower profile is nice. The E 400 wagon is the best snow car I have owned by far. It has air suspension for a bit more clearance but if your cabin is down a fire road it is obviously not the vehicle. If the cabin is off a paved road the benefit of all the miles with a sedan/wagon outweigh the time possibly every 20 years or so where you can get high centered. Tetons get quite a bit more snow than central CO and no issues in 5 years.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c Жыл бұрын
Crossovers, SUV's, sedans, wagons, are all typically better in snow than trucks due to the light weight back ends, yeah once you load them down they do OK, but if you got a 2WD long bed truck with a heavy V8 or diesel engine under the hood they're quite useless in the snow unless you get enough weight in the bed LOL.

I feel stupid asking...JLU meaning Jeep Wrangler JL? I'm not well versed on their designations but I like Jeeps...a lot of people I work with have Jeeps...a few Compasses and Cherokees, a bunch of different years of Wranglers and a Renegade or two. I'd take a Renegade probably because I don't want to give up too much fuel economy. I agree on that last part of your statement...living in MN and working overnights, it's nice to stick my head out the door and start my vehicle before I clock out and change to go home. Car is defrosted and seats are warm when I get in....wish I had a heated wheel... I don't have many requirements in a vehicle, but I think in my next one, heated wheel and seats, remote start, BLIS, and auto-dimming rearview are required.
@perpelle
@perpelle Жыл бұрын
I don't get the craving for remote start. Engines during idle are SO slow to create heat when started cold and the fuel consumption (especially on gas vehicles) are high. Toyotas pwr heat does help somewhat though. Why haven't aux heaters caught on in the states? They are superior in every way except price (~2500 USD get's you the app connected one).
@Mike.Macmyazka
@Mike.Macmyazka Жыл бұрын
@@perpelle for myself it’s about getting the windows to start defrosting more than anything. Rear defrost, heated mirrors, heated seat all are electric so they heat much quicker than the engine. It’s never running more than 5 minutes before I get out there. And while idling does waste fuel, it’s truly an insignificant amount overall. I also drive somewhat efficient cars and not a truck or SUV so not only is the engine more efficient but it’s smaller so it doesn’t take long to warm up.

The Audi 40/60 f/r split > Mercedes 4Matic. I had a 2015 Touareg and it was noticeably better than our 2017 GLC. The VW ran Continental Wintercontact si and the MB ran Michelin X-ice Xi3. If you are going to have a full size truck get a trim with auto 4x4. Its much better for snow, specifically when road conditions are a mix of snow, ice, wet, bare. Heavier vehicles are generally worse - turn worse - stop worse - and when you park it in the ditch you'll have that much more momentum.

I agree with Nathan on the Defender, having had owned a 90 in the snow belt. It’s amazing in the snow, that is, it’s off road tech is and I didn’t even have the rear locker in the off road pack. However, the tires mine came with, which are indeed the std tires on the off road pack, are horrendous in the snow. They were goodyear wrangler adventurers. They aren’t 3 peak rated in their all terrain category, and far from an actual snow tire. That’s why I went with the std street tires and without the off-road pack on my 130 order.

No matter how good the Subaru AWD is (Had 2022 Subaru Ascent) with that kind of snow none of the modes could match 4WD with center diff locked on the 4Runner. good list. not many 'cars' but I get that youre going for your specific area so that makes sense. The bronco sport is great in the snow as you mentioned. I love mine and just run the all terrain m+s tires. Ive only ever run snows on my Ford Flexes, one fwd and one awd, and both were a beast in the snow. It took a long time for me to buy into the snow tire thing and I only ever drove sedans and no snow tires. My area has mild winters by my standards (I grew up and lived in the snow belt of Ontario where snow was much deeper and more intense storms and full road closures were common). I drove fwd and rwd, and found both were ok in heavy snow conditions with all season tires as long as you managed your driving and put weight in the trunks. AWD is definitely a game changer tho as far as bad weather driving. Those winters in a rwd 77 dodge were definitely intense lol

It's funny how opinions vary and needs vary. I have been in MN my entire life (3/4 of it in the Twin Cities and the other 1/4 in SE MN). I have been driving for almost 25 years now. Having only owned FWD cars I figured out pretty early on that snow tires were necessary given our winters. As much as I would like to see how AWD/4x4 does, I don't have a need (I value economy too much to give up even a few MPG). I'll gladly spend money on snow tires every 4-5 years seeing as how I can get 50-80k on them in that period of time and I can get about 60-80k on summer tires in that same period making the cost of owning 2 sets of wheels and tires relatively inexpensive (I drive a lot). Side note, I drive lowered cars (usually just springs so maybe an inch to an inch and a half max lower than stock...and barring any large ice chunks in the road, I don't have any issues...have damaged a few bumpers in the past....in fact, I believe the lower center of gravity in the winter is beneficial). I see a lot of AWD/4x4 struggling when I don't...but then I'm sure they aren't on winter tires. Would love to experience the combination of AWD and winter tires. I would probably feel invincible. And wind up in a ditch at some point becoming cocky. lol On that note...I have always like the Flex and wanted one for both the space and also because I wanted the AWD 3.5 Ecoboost...but again...I value economy so I never jumped on one...there is one locally at a dealership that I keep eyeballing, but the price would have to come down quite a bit before I would say yes to it...plus it's right at that 100k mark and I don't know if it's had the waterpump serviced or not....I hear that can be costly...then of course I would probably just tune and modify it to make it fast and it wouldn't be useable for me.

@@Mike.Macmyazka I hear you. Both my Flexes were the 3.5 NA and were super reliable. I traded on the Bronco Sport because I want my final car payment to end before I retire lol the 2.0 is much quicker than the Flex was as you probably can imagine but the Flex was a fantastic vehicle. I have a messed up neck...long story...and getting into lower vehicles is now awkward for me...so I stuck with the SUV. But, I really miss sedans...my last one being a 2008 Sebring which was also very reliable and good in snow and had 377,000KMS when I traded it.

To be honest, every vehicle can handle the snow in winter. A good set of winter tires does the job. Or all weather tires for those areas that experience 2 or 3 snowstorms but have a great snow clean up crew. The problem with today's society is that people think you need AWD for areas where it snows. It maybe true, but they don't realize that tires make a huge factor in winter. Majority get all season tires on their AWD vehicle and call it a day. Sure it may get you unstuck quicker than a 2wd vehicle, but when it comes to stopping and handling, that's when the tires make the huge difference. I own a 2006 Accord and last year i put on the Michelin Crossclimate 2s. My area does get snow and a few times per year we do get snowstorms that dump at least 5 inches of snow. My car handled the snow with no problem. I drove the speed limit in the middle of a major snow storm while everyone with AWD was driving slow because they know their tires would not handle the heavy snow when it came down to braking.

I don't disagree...I've only owned FWD cars and use winter tires...live in Minnesota. With that said, there are always some cars that seem to be better than others. Of the ones I have owned, my 2007 Cobalt was probably my favorite. It handled winter so well compared to my 14 Cruze or my 16 Fusion. My mom has a 1st gen Honda Fit and even with all season tires, that thing does extremely well in winter and I can't figure out why...not sure if it's because it is so light (which seems backwards as so many people talk about heavier cars being better in winter). I would like to try AWD and winter tires but I feel I would either lose confidence or become too cocky and that would cause me to have issues. Your experience with other people is the same experience I have...I'm usually flying through the snow at speed or sometimes faster than I should be and I'm passing people who have AWD/4x4, but most of them probably don't have good tires anyway...I mean they have the mentality that AWD/4x4 alone will be good enough whereas if they add the winter tires, they'd be way better off. As I said, overall I agree with you.
@Mike.Macmyazka
@Mike.Macmyazka Жыл бұрын
They have, but the problem is that people either don't realize how good winter tires are or they think they don't need them. I think anyone in northern states should at least try them once. I mean Canada has rules and Quebec requires winter tires for winter driving. I know plenty of people don't like mandates, but honestly, if you want to own a vehicle, you should be able to afford to buy winter tires and make sure your car has good tires on it to be safe... But I'm not here to argue anything so I will leave it at that.

Word. It's laziness. People just want one set of tires. In my opinion is just pure ignorance, especially if you live in places like Colorado. AWD + all seasons might get you started when FWD + all seasons gets stuck but they are on a level playing field when they need to brake. Countries in Europe that have four (real) seasons are demanded by LAW to have summer and winter tires. I run studded winter tires on my hilux, it's so much safer.

Only Chevrolet offers Autotrac on pickups and SUV’s. This is an absolute game changer in the snow for these classes of vehicles.

Can confirm. Had a Chevy Colorado. When combine the g80 with the auto 4x4 mode and it kicks the shit out of my current Tacoma trd off road in snow and ice. If that Colorado didn’t have transmission/torque converter problems from day one I would have kept it. Such a better driving truck and way better 4x4 system in the GM than the Toyota.

Rented a 4Runer Off Road for a week at Vail in Jan 2022. Simply terrible driving 4WD on tarmac with the usual light glaze of snow & ice. AWD like my WRX is the deal for roads with snow. If you get 2 feet my advise is wsit for tge ploe

@TFLtalk I have an off topic question for you, Roman. I’ve seen plenty of videos regarding personal vehicles owned by Andre or Nathan or Tommy or Kase. But one thing I don’t remember ever seeing is a video of your own cars Roman. Do you only drive the company vehicles or do you have some of your own? Would you be willing to share what you have? Obviously I’m assuming you’re trying to be a proper journalist and not show personal preference but everyone has something they like or prefer. Thanks.

Roman says he drives company cars or loaned manufacturer cars that he reviews. His last real personal car was his dad’s 78 Lincoln Mark V that he gave to Tommy who eventually donated it.
